(April 2, 2017)</strong> – West Virginia University men’s basketball guard Jevon Carter has been named the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Defensive Player of the Year at the annual AT&T NABC Guardians of the Game Awards Show on Sunday evening at the Orpheum Theatre in Phoenix.</p><p></p><p>Carter, a junior from Maywood, Illinois, was named the Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Year and was named to the Big 12 All-Defensive Team for the third year in a row. He became the third player in Big 12 history to be named a three-time member of the All-Defensive Team.</p><p></p><p>Carter led the Big 12 Conference in steals, finishing the season with 92, the second-most steals in a season in school history. For his career, Carter has 218 career steals and needs 34 to break the WVU school record.</p><p></p><p>In the latest NCAA stats, Carter helped the Mountaineers to lead the country in total steals (371), steals per game (10.0) and forced turnovers (740).</p><p></p><p>“I would like to thank the NABC and all the coaches across the country for selecting me for such a prestigious award,” Carter said. “Even though this is an individual award, I have to give credit and thank my teammates and coaching staff for our Press Virginia defense. It’s an honor for me to receive this award, not only for myself, but for West Virginia basketball and all of Mountaineer Nation.”</p><p></p><p>The Mountaineers finished the 2016-17 season with 28 victories, the third-most wins in a season in school history. WVU advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the second time in three seasons.</p></blockquote><p></p>
