"How many NFL games do you guys watch? Do they rotate guys just to rotate them? I have never done that, and like it or not, it's something we've never done."

He will not change so he must go. He is not in the NFL and his way will not work at Nebraska.

I don't think he needs to rotate just for the heck of it, but when things are not working, or guys are getting blown up / missing assignments, then they need to sit. Give someone else a try. If for nothing else just to hold them accountable.

It's one thing to say, we aren't rotating because of a gap in quality.. it's another thing entirely, to say we don't rotate just because we have never done it.

So which is it? Quality issue, or you just don't do it? He is talking out his butt on this one.

And the other posters are right, it doesn't develop depth, nor does it keep guys fresh in the game, and certainly doesn't promise much to a recruit.

Furthermore, IF the reason was a quality issue, wouldn't we see some rotation at a couple of spots? Or is he just saying all 5 have a quality issue at the backup position? I find that hard to believe. So the real reason is, he just doesn't want to do it.

Our best OL is a redshirt freshman. That could indicate early playing time is possible.

One might argue that our 3rd or 4th best OL is a red shirt freshman as well. Unfortunately he is on the outside looking in.

If your only gonna play your best 5 u damn well better get your best 5 out there. I know injuries happen and guys get forced into playing but if you are telling me that number 57 s among our 5 best available I'm telling you we better be recruiting 8 OL a year until we can upgrade the talent.
Another reason why I'd play 7 OL. 1 center and 3 guards and tackles 1 t each who could swing on both right and left sides.

I would really like to rotate on the OL for a variety of reasons. But just because he will not change, does not mean he should go. We first need to evaluate if his way will work.

How are things looking so far?

I am all for giving this coaching staff a chance, but I don't think his way will work. He might (if he lasts) get lucky once every 3 or 4 years and have a good line.

Do you expect Cavanaugh to say, "We don't rotate because our second and third string linemen suck."
No, I don't expect him to say that. What I do expect is a straight answer. He is giving you 2 excuses, and I find the quality excuse hard to believe. That isn't a straight answer and tells me that he just doesn't want to rotate guys at all.

The OL coaching is a joke. They block high like they are in pass block mode during a lot of running plays. Zero strength and push.

Well this might be true, I haven't watched their technique, but they are a pass first type of offense, so it would not surprise me. These coaches don't really know how to coach a run first type of offense. The rotating thing might be overblown, I just don't like the double talk from the coach. Just say you don't do it, and leave the quality thing out of your explanation.

Can any supporters of OL rotation let me know what college teams do this? I can think of Michigan State, but that's it.

When was there a time rotating OL regularly and successfully was used at NU?

What exactly are we asking for here when referring to OL rotation? Are talking about subbing players or full line rotation?

I prefer some subbing out, which could be considered rotation if it's predetermined the number of snaps. This doesn't just help with experience/depth, it also forces competition which is never a bad thing. We lose 3 starters after this season and will head in to 2016 inexperienced, once again.

IIRC, our OL this season has the least experience in the conference. As we all know and assume to agree, that's not a good thing.

Where did this idea that a bunch of lineman need to rotate get popular? We never used to do that until we blew teams out. Barney's idea of rotation was putting 16 names in a hat, and then drawing names. Positions be damned.

NU's mid-90's run was characterized by substantial rotation in the OL. Aaron Taylor, Chris Dishman, and Jon Zatechka palyed all played a couple a series as back-ups when the game was still on the line. Aaron Taylor remembers getting chewed out by TO (in a TO type of way) because of getting blown up on a 3rd and short vs Mizzou. Something like, "I put you guys in to give the other guys a rest, and I expect you to do your job." Those are prime time back-ups to be sure. Dishman was allowed to get run over by Warren Sapp a few times in the '94 OB. They rotated less in '97 because the back-ups weren't ready, but Matt Hoskinson rotated regularly at center and both guard positions. My memory is that Tenopir always wanted quality depth and used it as an edge over opponents.

Do in 97 the back ups weren't ready so they didn't rotate in, hhhmmmm
