to BCS programs as HC? I mean if we're going to get stuck with a coordinator, then at least show me the company we're keeping. Like I said, I'm basically caving in, so convince me.

Stoops - DC Florida to OU
Pellini - DC LSU to Nebraska

Who the F else?

DC (Texas) to HC Iowa State. not that he's been successful, though. so i guess this won't convince you.

How many OC have gone to a loosing program with no winning history and turned it around? I don't want to hear about some OC who went to Georgia or Tenn or were ever you should win. Hell Croom could win at Georgia or Tenn.

Lets hear about some real success stories.

Not sure if you're looking for NFL coordinators or not, but Saban was DC with the Cleveland Browns before landing at Michigan State. Although he was previous HC with Toledo for 1 season before going to the Browns

...the success rate wouldn't be much different than losing schools that hired "experienced head coaches" from smaller schools. You need to get off this line of thinking. It's ridiculous.

TT was decent, but Leach took it to a whole new level.

Kansas was absolutely awful, and Mangino took them to a damn BCS game.

Stoops took over a terrible Oklahoma program, that was previously led by our old friend, Ron Cooper. So he built that program back up.

Jeff Tedford at Cal turned that program around.

I'll give you two examples:

Ralph Friedgen (Maryland had returned to shitsvilles by the time he took over in 2000)
Mark Mangino (Kansas sucked *** when he took over in 2002)

Bill Snyder was Iowa's offensive coordinator when he took over Kansas State. K-State had had only 2 winning seasons in the previous 34 years.

Talent can over come bad coaching. GA and Tenn. usually can get the talent. Even dumb *** Fulmer won until he got lazy and stop recruiting.

Look at Les Miles at LSU. His first few years he did great even with the dumb *** coaching calls he made but now that talent is diminishing they are not as good as they were. Let's not forget that OK State was winning before he took over that program.

Slam Dunks
Bobby Petrino Auburn OC to Louisville
Mangino Oklahoma OC To Kansas
Rodriguez Clemson OC to WVU
Leech Oklahoma OC to Texas Tech
Bob Stoops Florida DC to Oklahoma
Mark Richt FSU OC to UGA

And the threesome of Patterson, Peterson, and Whittingham were all coordinators at their respective schools before they got head coaching gigs

I know I am missing a bunch of the ****** ones
Edited to say that between the time I started writing the list and posted it, another list was listed.

coordinator moved to HC at same school (which is a different animal altogether, I'd argue, since there's familiarity and continuity built in), we can go ahead and throw Gary Patterson in there.

Like I said, I'm going to be f'n disappointed if Byrne completely whiffs on Petersen, Brian Kelly, Patterson and Graham, and we end up with a coordinator. I'm sorry, I just am.

AT TULSA.

What is the magic experience that makes one a "proven HC?"

What is better, defensive coordinator at Tulsa that doesn't even field a great defense OR number one offensive coordinator in the nation?

haven't seen Tubberville mentioned yet. He as DC, at maybe A&M before turning things around at Ole Miss. For some reason I want to say Zook was a coordinator prior to taking the UF job, but I may just be remembering things wrong.

Fedora was Oklahoma State's OC last year. USM offense improved considerably this year, although defense is mostly a rumor in C-USA. Recruiting also improved by leaps and bounds.

When has MSU hired someone the caliber of Wilson or Mullen? That would be huge.

The last 3 coaching hires we made were a former player, a successful coach noone wanted due to NCAA issues, and a lifetime position coach out of college football for 17 years. Honestly, how can you justify being disappointed in hiring one of the top OCs in college football, much less one of the top assistants overall?
I wanted Petersen, Kelly, or Patterson too, but we expecting us to go hire away someone else's head coach is really a stretch. Graham isn't a bad candidate, but I can't understand putting him ahead of Wilson and Mullen. He's a defensive guy and Tulsa's defense sucks. I'm not saying I wouldn't take him, but he's not at the top of my list after the obvious top 3.

if I'm disappointed and you're satisfied. It's a f'n message board. I can be disappointed and you can be happy. It's OK if we don't see eye to eye. I won't convince you. You won't convince me.
