What are the criteria for making the CBI anyways?

If I recall correctly, we've never played. Is that because we didn't qualify, or we were never invited? Or did we decline? I remember there was a year or two where we just missed the NIT. Had a winning record or whatever, why didn't we go to the CBI?

I don't know what their minimum criteria are for offering a bid, but the only sub-.500 teams they've admitted have been from major conferences, so ability to pay seems to trump team quality in some cases.

The CBI started in 2008. We were really bad that year, then we made the NIT the following four years, and then we were bad again in 2013 and 2014, so we haven't really been contenders for the CBI since its inception.

Yeah, we haven't "just missed" the NIT since the CBI has started.

And THIS qualifies as just missing. SO it doesn't have to really be just missed.

I think at the point where we are -- it's schools interested in paying.

And we DEFINITELY should with a young team.

The CBI is a waste of time...plus its during exam week. If we do not make the NIT forget it...it is not worth paying to be in it, plusin all the years of this tournament only 2 B1G team have ever participated

I do know that in the years we were on the "NIT bubble," it was made clear that we would not pay for a CBI bid if we missed the NIT. As it happened, we made the NIT so that didn't matter. Glad to see that attitude has changed.

Silly statement to make.

Every other Big Ten team has made the NCAA Tournament too.

We also have a really young team. It would be the first postseason tournament experience for the junior, sophomore, and freshman class.

You know -- the ones COMING BACK NEXT YEAR (and Tre Demps)

There's no logical reason NOT to play in our situation. There is a cost obviously, but SOME of it can be offset to reduce the fee a little bit.

I'm assuming that since it's a Collins decision, it'll be a team decision. I gotta think he takes input from his guys on whether they want to keep playing/how they feel, etc.

Might be the players who ultimately decide. I think this group is pretty competitive and will want to go.

why I am saying only 2 B1G teams have ever participated is that more have turned down the invite....they do not want to pay to play in this tournament, it is almost insulting. You are a Big Ten school, why pay to play in a tournament, Plus what is an extra game or two going to do. This is not like football where you keep practicing if you are in a bowl and do not if you are not. They can start individual workouts next Monday if they want to

There is a absolutely a benefit to getting used to playing elimination games in a tournament settings against teams you haven't seen before. The CBI is rarely profitable for a school, but it has valuable experience benefits. Btw, pretty sure the fees are mostly for hosting games rather then entering the tourney.

While we are indeed a Big Ten school, we are also, by a wide margin, the worst major conference team in the history of college basketball, and the idea that we can turn our noses up at postseason play and call it beneath us is laughable.

If there ever were circumstances that makes post season play attractive this is it. I get that we don't want to go every years, it almost looks desperate but with this young team, a team that I think has a chance next year, we need the experience.

Two years ago, Purdue went to the CBI with a 15-17 record, winning one and losing one. I think they had some young players they wanted to develop like Hammons If we host a game I would buy a ticket and go.

Is it a given that if we want to play, we would be invited? I still don't know what the criteria is and what we should expect as a cut-off. Clearly they don't just let anyone who wants to pay in, and there are only 16 spots.

It is not a given, no. "Bracketology" sites that purport to analyze potential CBI fields are basically engaging in random guesswork.
