You just can't take anything away from Memphis at all. We have no idea where our football team is until after the Auburn game. It's not like we struggled with Memphis last year.. I mean we put up 49 points and 570 yards of total offense. If you want to take away or assume anything from Memphis.. then assume that our offense is improved and our defense is not as good. Last year we gave up 230 yards and this year we gave up 340 yards.

We play our game and I'm gonna have a good time out in the Barn Saturday night... Hope Spencer is proved correct.

We blitzed a total of 0.0000 times this past week and pulled starters in the 3rd. Plus we didn't even have 2 of our defensive starters to begin with. We ran around 4-5 plays on offense and rammed Memphis a new one. We played about as conservative as we can play and still set school records. We showed Auburn 0.87% of our playbook and schemes and they had to pull out all stops to beat a ****** Utah State team, that had a Freshman QB starting. Simple math indicates only one outcome. Lets just hope we are focused and our players can add up 2+2 on Saturday.

I still think they'll be in the bottom of FBS schools by the end of the season, but they did look dramatically better on offense and that's saying alot in comparison as to how bad they were last year.

Perhaps we were more vanilla on defense and trying to play as many young players as possible, or perhaps we are worse on defense.. but to say Memphis is "much" better on offense is a stretch. The point I'm trying to make is that we just don't know anything until after Auburn.

but I don't care what team you're playing... to score 50+ points on a team and to hold them within 2 scores shows good coaching and/or good to great athletes. After watching Memphis this year and last year... I don't see how it's hard to believe that they're a better team than they were this time last year. That's not saying that all of a sudden they're going to go for a bowl game as I still feel that they're going to end the season with a losing record, but don't be surprised if at the very least they double their win totals. The point that I'm making is that it shows just how bad they were last year. Don't take that as I'm saying we're BCS caliber just because we blew Memphis out. If we do the same thing to Auburn then maybe my wool will be in overdrive.

I am not buying into the media we are that good and Auburn that bad. Should we win? Yes but i think its close. 28-24. I hope i am wrong and we beat those bastards 63-0 . If we win by 21 or more i am on the wool wagon. But our defense is what i am not sold on yet.

(from someone who actually attended 3-4 Memphis games last year) that they most definitely ARE a lot better than they were last year... what that means for us, I'm not really sure

lost eight starters from last year to include the qb and rb. I doubt they were much improved and nothing from that game showed it.

does not mean they still won't be one of the worst teams in NCAA this year... I don't see how you guys are missing that point..

They aren't great or even mediocre, but they are definitely improved fromlast season's1-11 team.

That said, they don't look improved at all to me. The only bright spot I saw for them was the true FR QB, who looks like he may have a chance to be decent.

This made me laugh.

Defense is definitely the concernwith this game. I think we can put up points, butthey have some good backs and a great OC and we have a group of inexperienced LBs. Ihave nightmares about our LBsover reaching and them cutting it back for big gains.

Arkansas - 486 yards, 31 points (32 first downs)
OM - 498 yards, 31 points
Michigan - 485 yards, 52 points (26 first downs)
Memphis - 645 yards, 59 points (10 yards per play)

That is an offense that is clicking. I don't care who you're playing. I expect us to be right at 500 yards of offense this weekend.

1. We were playing memphis on the road. Last year we were playing at home... Duh, right? I know we had about as many fans as Memphis did.... but it surely wasn't a hyped HOME opener for us. what's the typical spread differential for a typical home-game vs an away-game... 3 points? I personally think it's probably more like 7-10 points in college football.... but when you add in the rivalry aspect then that away-vs-home differential can go exponential.

2. Which leads me to my next point....I remember reading numerous times about how seriously Memphis was taking their game with us... THEIR HOME OPENER.... I can't remember what the reason was (new offense? fresh enthusiasm?) but I got the impression that this was one of those "circled on the calendar" type games for Memphis and we basically had them grabbing their ankles from the get-go. Memphis may suck... but they way we drubbed them IN THEIR HOUSE with all of their pregame enthusiasm, was still pretty damn impressive.

Not buying into my opinion on the magnitude of home field advantage in rivalry games? Well riddle me this....how do you explain the homefield advantage in Eggbowls?
- The home team almost always wins even though it seems that, coincidentally, the home team has proven themselves to be the lesser team over the previous 10-11 games.
- Last years eggbowl was even evidence of how much effect homefield advantage plays in a rivalry game even though we won as the road team. We were about as good as I have ever seen us by the end of the year.... and Ole miss was about as bad as I have ever seen them... and we were only 8 points better than them? Get real...

Back to MSU @ Auburn: I can't speak for AU, but MSU has definitely started viewing that game with eggbowl-like animosity. I think if last years game was played @AU, then AU would have cruised to an 14+ point victory. But the atmosphere was so electrically amped on OUR CAMPUS that I'm sure our players were so juiced that they never even stopped to take a sip of water. That being said, we are obviously not the home team this year, but I think/know we are taking that rivalry-game mentality into it.... Judging by the lack of respect from AU fans, I can't say they same for them. That could spell trouble for AU since I legitimately believe that we are significantly better team than them this year. Hell, it'd be one thing to almost lose to USU in an away game.... but to almost lose in a home opener after a Nat'l Champ season.... well, to me, that says that they may be pretty bad this year.

One more brief example, remember when we almost, and maybe should have, beat LSU at home in 2009?... Well in 2010, with a team that was light years better than '09, we got thrown around Death Valley.

I would say there is a lot we can read from that game relative to our game this week.

1. We covered a 27 point spread on the road. We racked up record breaking yardage against a D1 opponent. We manhandled memphis high from start to finish.

2. Our worthy opponent on the other hand didn't come remotely close to covering a 23 point spread at home. It took a minor miracle at the end to avoid what was certain defeat. Heck their fans headed for the exits early.....against utah state!! Let that sink in a minute. Now chew on this one. They, by their own admission were physically dominated on the line of scrimmage.

What that tells me is that if usu can push their D line around like that we SHOULD own them in the trenches. Will au be improved this week? Probably but to get their D to SEC level in one week would be a 10X bigger miracle than the one it took to win the game sat.

Bottom line is, I am not going to guarantee a win but I feel pretty dang good about our chances.

we looked like we knew what we were doing. This is more than a lot of teams can say on the first week, especially when using so many players. Sure, Memphis was a cupcake, but we put up a lot of yards and, outside a couple early false start penalties, we didn't do anything stupid. There were no delays of game or using time outs to avoid delays of game (that I recall). In fact, we were able to run a couple quick plays at the end of the first half for a nice field goal attempt. I don't remember any confusion about personnel on the field or what plays were to be run.</p>

Their offense is improved but their D is horrible. If they beat Arky State this week then they may get 3 but if they lose they are toast.
