Celebrating 125 Years of Mountaineer Football MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (May 1, 2016) – It was 125 years ago on a snowy Saturday afternoon – West Virginia University football began! The 2016 season marks the 125th year of Mountaineer football, and West Virginia University Athletics is asking its fans to help it celebrate the occasion during the summer months in preparation for the upcoming season. This Sunday, May 1, marks 125 days until the official kickoff to the 2016 season against Missouri at Milan Puskar Stadium on Saturday, September 3. A special website, which will be unveiled later in May, is planned to relive and recapture the great history, the unforgettable moments, players, coaches and teams that make up one of college football’s most storied programs. The site will have special features, classic videos (some never-seen before), interactive graphics and fan poll voting to help celebrate the 125-year tradition. A fan vote tournament of the great teams and great moments will be held to determine what fans believe are the greatest in each category. Later this summer, season ticket holders will receive a commemorative flag with the 125-year logo to display at home, work or while travelling to their destinations. Fans are being asked to take their own unique photos with the 125-year flags using the #WVU125 hashtag, wherever their travels take them, during the summer months. Photos will be shared on all of WVU official social media platforms, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Members of the athletic department have been searching the archives for unique content, photos and videos to post on the Web site as well as on its social media platforms. All these items will be recognized as they will have the hashtag #WVU125 when they are posted to commemorate the celebration. Fans can send in their own unique photos and memories using the #WVU125 hashtag.
