Almost makes you wonder if they are merging with another company and will soon change their name....

there are changes coming to Cell South Sept 26. It's not a merger or buyout but a "rebranding". Also added that some different phones and plans were on the way, but didn't mention any specifics. That's all they would tell me.

But they better have the iPhone when the new one releases in October, because I am in need of a new phone, like now.

I seem to remember Cellularsouth planning to upgrade to 4G coverage in the 4th quarter of this year.

Can anyone compare the Cellularsouth data speed to AT&T or Verizon? I have a CS blackberry and web browsing is out of the question. I am curious if it works better on some of their other smartphones.

They will not give any realistic time other than "sometime between September and December." I am holding out for 4G before getting a new phone and it is getting harder and harder. I still have the old blackberry with the roller ball. I remember that the move to 4G was in conjunction with another bigger carrier, but never heard anything about a buyout or a merger. <div>
</div><div>If they get the iphone, it will be the first model at best. No way they get the newest version. </div>

A close friend of mine works for Cell South, and he says they are trying to move away from the image of just a "Southern" cell carrier. I'm not sure what the name will be moving forward, but he also told me they "might" get iPhones. He is being somewhat kept in the dark as are all employees. The cheap signs on the storefronts are really just Cell South covers over the new sign for the new "brand". They will also be upgrading to 4G very soon too. I found that amusing b/c my 3G is shoddy at best in most places.

because I haven't seen anything about another delay with the iPhone 5. Supposedly they are introducing a 4s and a new model. At least that is the buzz right now. I am sure it is possible that a new model doesnt come until next year, it just seems that everyone still expects one in October. Moreover, I dont think anyone has come out and definitely said that their will NOT be an iPhone 5 released in October.<div>

My little flip phone never dropped a call the whole time she was bitching about hers.

This is my first time with a smart phone of any kind but I am very happy with it. Fast and easy.

I drive all over MS and LA on a daily basis and may drop a call once every other week. My cell phone is like my office phone and I am on the damn thing about 3000+ minutes per month.

I switched to ATT to get the iphone a couple of years ago and dropped 5-10 calls per day. Worst damn cell service I have ever had.

I hate the BB and loved the iphone but the service with Cellsouth is the reason I am still with them.

I would have them troubleshoot your phone because if you are dropping more than a call a week, something is not right.

I just talked with my cousin who works in the corporate office in Ridgeland. Says its not the iphone and they're not selling out to a national brand. Also that its the biggest thing Cellular South has ever done but wouldn't spill the secret to me.

My daughter had CellSouth last year and dropped them over coverage issues. I can't say about their speed but I know my 3G Droid X2 from Verizon is way faster than my brother in law's Samsung 4G on AT&T, in fact his daughters first model Droid (Verizon) is faster than his new 4G.

So it's not something you can compare to 3G. 4G is actually something called WiMax and it's a much better approach to doing mobile internet. What you have to remember is that the early networks were just using the phone system for data (basically a mini-ISDN modem). When they came out with 3G they used a different system for data but it was still built on existing technology. With WiMax the set out to specifically design a standard around mobile internet devices instead of it just being a value add to a phone. It's going to take a while to roll it out but it should be much better.

Not October.... :(
but every tech site I read (and I read most of them) is saying both the iPhone 4s and the iPhone 5 in October. The 4s is expected to be fully/mostly subsidized (the free/cheap alternative) and the iPhone 5 is the jump forward for those who want to shell out the cash. And you may be asking yourself, why not just use the 4 as the cheap alternative? The new OS (iOS 5) is apparently very different and the existing phones can not use it. We know they are integrating the iCloud into the OS and supposedly there are other major changes. That's why the two phones, they don't think anyone would buy the old 4 without iOS 5 and the hardware can't handle it.

That is all speculation but a new iPhone is DEFINITELY happening before the beginning of the year though because Apple has been producing hundreds of thousands of phones a day for about 3 weeks now. I seriously doubt they plan on dumping them in a hole. You can't build that many of something without people knowing you are building it.

That makes me feel a lot better about upgrading around Christmas if 4G is a completely different animal than 3G. Thanks...

That BB that drops calls is using the same network that works great with countless other phones. Most likely, its the phone's fault. There is nothing about any particular brand or type of phone that should be managed differently than any other phone. From Cellular South's end, all phones are the same. From your end, all phones are not the same because your's apparently sucks.<div>

Heard Cell South bought a company that would expand Huntsville and Nashville but not the whole states.<div>
</div><div>Also heard that Apple wants Cell South to buy 1 million iPhones in order to for them to come over. Cell South doesnt have 1 million customers. Now if they move into these areas it could be possible but I dont see it happening. We will see.</div>

all pointing to the same rumor from one site (who readily admits it's just a rumor).Where did you dig up those blogs? My favorite is the one trying to get some TechCrunch love. Funny stuff...
