Elijah Robinson leaving SU to go back to Texas A&M as co-defensive coordinator. He was demoted to DLine coach, from Def Coord., at SU a few weeks back.

How do you get demoted at syracuse and quickly get a better job at a&m (a playoff team)? Nothing like this happens when I f*ck up, at least not to me.

😞

Now I'm wondering if they are trying to talk a guy out of retirement.... maybe nobody wants the job?
Wittingham did not retire; he said he was "in the portal." Utah had run its course under his leadership and he was looking for a new challenge. I think he would be good for Michigan, hopefully cleaning up that sewer and bring some respectability to the program,

This...Whittingham made it very clear he still wanted to coach
He's the complete opposite of Harbaugh and Moore as a person...kind of what they need to fix the current perception (well earned) of their program

Whittingham is probably the best coach that Michigan could have hoped for at the present time. The guy is 66, but he can coach. People tend to forget that Utah was a Mountain West school not too long ago, and he made that program into one that was very tough to play year after year. Even though he is probably the right guy to stabilize things for now, given his age he probably is a short-term bridge to the next guy.

Agree and pretty surprising to me. He is an outstanding coach and probably still a bit underrated. I had a sense that he may not be totally done coaching but UM is not where I would expect him to end up. If it happens, I will be very interested to see how he transitions to football in the east/B10. Hopefully poorly, but I wouldn't bet on it.

UM set to hire Whittingham. While it’s not going to be the grand slam hire that Michigan fans wanted, I believe this is a good hire. Reports indicate the intention here was to maintain a degree of performance on the field in a more ethical manner. At his age, he’s obviously more of a transitional coach to reset the program. Here is one of several articles.

You have to wonder if this has been in the works for a while, he announces Dec 12 he's stepping down as Utah coach but not retiring? "I'm a free agent, entering the transfer portal."

Maybe that is the only way to hire a Mormon football coach out of the state of Utah. 😀 I am honestly happy that ours fell through as we got a better coach in Campbell. I do agree with your suspicions that this has likely been in the works for a bit of time. It is funny that it seems like the Deboer has been the smoke screen for PSU and scUM’s efforts.

The bar to meet a "more ethical manner" is pretty low. I think he can do it.

Whittingham seems like a solid guy-but at 66 Ingavevto think this is a "bridge hire" and probably a guy who will create a better culture (not that thst seems to too hard to do) UM must be keeping their eyes open for the next guy whomever that is.

Nothing new here. Fired or demoted coaches get recycled and rehired all the time.

Remember former Penn State offense coordinator John Donovan who was fired by Franklin? Donovan recovered and did a stint as the offense coordinator for the Washington Huskies.

Am I the only one questioning the timeline? Whittingham "retires" out of the blue two days before Moore fired?
