The gripe isn’t extra football. There has long been plenty of extra football. Most of the bowls never really meant anything other than for the team’s playing in them. But they were fun and teams & fans cared about them so they were kind of a big deal. But then opt outs came and everyone cares less and the playoff exponentially exasperated that. It's obvious that bowls are no longer a reward for an exceptional season - the CFP has assumed that role (for the most part, politics aside). But I don't understand why people are so opposed to extra football, even if they don't want to watch it. Treat it like all the other programs you don't care for - don't tune in.![]()
The playoffs as they are, mean less football to watch with teams at their best. It used to be enjoyable to know that throughout most of December and then capped off on Jan 1st there would be competitive football games to watch. The playoffs don’t replace that, it was a unique culture in sports.
The playoff will continue to expand, at least to 24, but then you’re looking at least half to two thirds of the field not being legit natty contenders. I just don’t find that to be better.
