I think they got the number (12 teams) right (for now), but the format for selecting those 12 teams and awarding byes doesn’t make sense. I think the format made more sense when Oregon could represent the Pac-12 and Texas could represent the Big 12. After realignment, they tweaked the format a little (6-6 to 5-7), but they should have just said we’re taking the 12 best teams and seeding them 1-12, regardless of conference champs. They could have committed to that for one year and reassessed.Hell, I guess just wishful thinking. I thought they were interested in selecting the best teams, and ranking them in some type of sensible fashion after all the games were done. Both things that they have done in the past. Those were both bad assumptions to make, apparently.
The ironic thing: That would have resulted in the G5 being included (without affirmative action), which I think is the main driver of having one more auto bid than the number of “power” conferences.
