Hell, I guess just wishful thinking. I thought they were interested in selecting the best teams, and ranking them in some type of sensible fashion after all the games were done. Both things that they have done in the past. Those were both bad assumptions to make, apparently.

I think they got the number (12 teams) right (for now), but the format for selecting those 12 teams and awarding byes doesn’t make sense. I think the format made more sense when Oregon could represent the Pac-12 and Texas could represent the Big 12. After realignment, they tweaked the format a little (6-6 to 5-7), but they should have just said we’re taking the 12 best teams and seeding them 1-12, regardless of conference champs. They could have committed to that for one year and reassessed.

The ironic thing: That would have resulted in the G5 being included (without affirmative action), which I think is the main driver of having one more auto bid than the number of “power” conferences.

12 is fine I suppose. I’d think 8 is sufficient, but that toothpaste ain’t going back in the tube. I’d say 16 is not really a leap from 12, you don’t add any extra weeks but you could add 10 more games. Seems reasonable.

If they stay at 12, and they aren’t getting rid of autobids, I think the proper thing is to take the Top 4 conference champs in the rankings and assure them of a bid, but not a bye. 5th best conference champ isn’t guaranteed anything. Then you guarantee that the highest ranked G5 team gets a bid, whether they are a conference champ or not.

Apply that this year, and Clemson does not get a bid. Both SMU and Bama get in. Boise State gets in, and makes it even with a loss in their title game. Everyone is happy.

Or, zero autobids for anyone. Just select the 12 the same way you used to select the 4. Same result as above. Everyone is again happy.

You can’t be serious.. the sec is showing it’s not what it was?

the sec use to be Alabama.. then it was Alabama and Georgia… the sec is deep and has 3-4 teams that could legitimately win a national title.

their are acc teams paying big money to buy out of future games against the sec….

the sec is as good as it’s ever been… and worlds better than the acc, big 12 thought about being.

They are all beatable. Texas, uga, bama, ole miss, TAMU. Texas uga bama lsu Florida are not the dominant teams they used to be. Any of the teams close in the playoffs could beat them. Uga just got taken to the wire at home by gtech. Texas got obliterated by uga. Gtech not even in the hunt. Notre dame beat Texas am this season. Ole Miss best out of conference was wake and they suck. Texas best occ win was a mid big 10 Michigan team. So no I don't think the sec is head and shoulders above everyone like it used to be. My Trojans who absolutely sucked this year at 6-6 took out 8-4 lsu who also beat 9-3 Carolina. Big 12 and sec was 2-2 this season. ACC has a little less argument at 3-8 this season. But looks like the committee chose. They thought the big 10 was much stronger than the sec this year just look at the field

8 is plenty. If you take top 8, 1st 3 teams out are Boise, SMU & Bama. If you want to give auto bids to conference champion limit it to 4 & you’d add #9 Boise & #12 ASU & eliminate Indiana & Tennessee. I’d be ok either way.

1. I think the Big 12 champ will get a bye over Boise State. If I’m wrong, we may see the format change as soon as next season. Boise State has no business getting 1 of 4 byes.
2. Alabama is in with an SMU win. If Clemson wins, the debate will be Alabama vs. SMU. I think SMU wins that debate.

Boise State lost one game, AT Oregon, by three on a last play FG. They deserve it.

BSU’s best win(s) are over UNLV. They finished #24 in the final CFP rankings.

Those 2 wins over the CFP Top 25 are more than Clemson and SMU have combined.
