CG v GW Welcome to Duchon or Glenbard South

Who knows how much rain we will get, but if it is 2.5" like they are saying, Duchon may be washed out. If so, we may end up at Glenbard South which is our sister school to the south that has artificial turf.

Assuming we are playing at GW Duchon Field, so things to know:
  • Stands are tight, get there early. Some stands were damaged by flood and have not yet been replaced.
  • Put your students in the East end zone bleachers..last two Semis have been a blast with huge student sections there
  • You will want to park in the commuter lot just south of the train tracks on Park St. just above Cresent Ave which is about four blocks from the field, but a nice walk down Cresent
  • The field is a lot like your's only ours in 3 inches above flood plain and we have a lake just off the field hence the possibility of flooding and field being moved
  • The favorite watering hole for pregame is Northside for adult beverages and The Stand for the little ones. NS is about two blocks West of the field and The Stand is just across the train tracks from the commuter lot
  • There is limited parking in the neighborhood around the lake for the brave souls that get there early, but many complain it is impossible if you don't get there early
If we play at Glenbard South, the parking is much larger, the field will be faster and dryer, and the visitor stands are slightly more accommodating. We won't know the impact of the rain until Wednesday/Thursday, but plenty of notice will be provided by the school if there is a switch.

Thanks, Cap. Sure many CG fans (not sure there are more than two of us on the board) and others who want to attend the game will appreciate the info. I will miss the game and will be following on the web. In Iowa City again Saturday for my son's fraternity's dads' weekend. Only so many of those to attend so looking forward to that too.

@CGsupporter, for the love of all that is holy, do not speed or change lanes without using a directional if you drive an American car or anything more than 5 years old.

Also, get there early to see GEMs getting mimosa hammered at Shannon's.

I dunno Wild these guys look tough. I am most impressed with how well they block on the edge.

Pennington is a bull and they seal the edge as well as I have seen it done. GW will need to bring their A game. I'll wait until later to throw out my score, but the more I watch these guys, the more I respect them. Massey has the spread at 6. And to think over half of their skill guys come back next year.

Either way it turns out Saturday, I expect to see C-G in the preseason top 5 next year.

So who does it favor depending on if it's at GW or at GS?
Obviously GW is comfortable being at home, but is it to their advantage if it rains and the field is slower?
Might it play more to the GW speed to be at GS?

Great question. With C-G playing on grass at home, we lose that part of the advantage. They understand why you have two or three different sized screw in cleats.

If they play on a sloppy, frozen Duchon, I would definitely take the under.

That's another good point. What does CG practice on? If it is grass, then the only time they are on turf all year is about six times for away games, maybe. GW practices on turf, so the only time there feet touch grass are home games.

What kind of offense does Gary Grove run? Spread or version of it or do they run Wing-T power football?

In my humbled opinion, I think the only way GBW can be beat is if the other team can throw the ball and spread them out. The only teams that put up points on them and gave them struggles were Hinsdale South & Hinsdale Central. Both teams can throw the ball and spread them out. The power game is what they want you to run, they can play that game. That's no disrespect to CG, they're in the semi's for a reason but if power football is they're game then I'm going with GBW, not GB, GBW.

I will say this, I'm a huge fan of CG's uni's, Penn State style, love it.

They run a fairly straight forward triple option. Lots of dive with Pennington punishing defenses in the A gap. He doesn't go down easy. Off tackle plays tend to keep folks honest (QB cuts up 3-4 time a game to keep folks honest), but they have a couple of really quick scat backs that can hit the edge. Like I said before, the most impressive part of their play is their blocking on the edge. They seal very well with a wideout that engages and stays with his man and a tackle /TE that is quick to get out in front.

They have a couple of wrinkles you would expect. They run a reverse at least once every game. It usually gets 15-20 yards but haven't seen that play hit a home run yet, They also do a real nice play action off of the dive and go over the top. I would expect them to hit one of these on Saturday, but the question will be whether the field conditions are conducive. You have to put all three pieces together for it to work, and on a very cold day, it rarely works to have all three click.

They play old school football that tends to get under the skin of their opponents. They block to the end of the whistle just like GW. They swarm to the ball, just like GW. They have high quality LBs (Pennington started playing in the middle in week 8). They are young at the skill positions, but impressive. Like I said, I would be surprised if they are not Top 5 to start '16. High upside.

I say whoever wins between CG and GW wins 7a. Last year Libertyville struggled so much against the option. Basically all the same players since it was a junior dominate team last year in the seminfinals.

With the rain today I would find it very hard to believe the game is going to be played at Duchon.

it sure would make for a better game if they played it on turf, and knowing that C-G is practicing on turf means there would be no issues

So why no turf at Duchon? Seems logical, as the joint is on a flood plain. Has it been considered?

someone will chime in here on the specifics, but it is the fact that it sits on the lake. too much run off could impact the water supply.

Per this twitter account, game has already been moved to South HS. Smart move for all involved, one would have to think of player safety concerns on that grass field if it does snow 2-3 inches on Saturday morning.

Okay, one more time. The field, unfortunately back in 1924, was built off the shore of a small neighborhood lake. Well, actually, it was built IN the lake! Not having enough level land available, they brought in truckloads of fill and filled in the south end of the lake enough to put in a football field. In fact, if you dig down about five feet you will hit whatever the lake bottom is made out of. Flash forward to present. The lake now serves as a storm water retention pond for the north half of town. Any rain over four inches or so will flood as much as two feet of water up and over the entire field. Happens every four or five years. If there was field turf, all the little rubber particles would float away and the whole thing would have to be replaced. You could raise the field three feet, but then you would have to raise the track.... Talking millions and more than a year to do it. Sucks, but it is what it is.

Now, did I hear CG still has grass? What's the reason there?

well, there it is...

One stat to remember, Brodner played 6 games on turf and 6 games on grass. His TD totals were 24 on turf vs 16 on grass..he does love turf

Just take up a collection to raise the field. Should have enough $$ in a few hours. CG isn't on a flood plain, so thus no issue with flooding, so natural grass is ok.

Cap - thanks for the helpful info. Now that the game will be at GBS parking and seating should be more manageable.

Since 2004 CG is 4-0 in semi final games. Three of those games were on the road and all three were on turf.
This will however be their biggest challenge. CG is clearly the underdog.

Hopefully, but give yourself plenty of extra time anyway. Much of the parking there is on grass fields. If they feel it is too wet, they have the right to close those fields and send you off to remote shuttle lots which could mean an extra 30 minutes (they did this when we played GS in the '07 opener). Anyway, I like using the Butterfield rd entrance. 355 S to Butterfield rd west, Butterfield west past 53, past Park, easy right turn to the lots.

It,can be done. Montini had to raise theirs several feet up as well. Afterwards they figured out they had to then raise the stands because they were sitting too low. You can see the cement Cassions underneath. With as much money flowing into GBW you would think it would be a no brainier.

Welcome to the Southside...of Glen Ellyn. Although it will be cold, at least we all won't be frustrated by 10 turnovers like last year in 8A semis when the field was all but unplayable and the temps around 20. 35 will seem balmy and the field will play no factor.

Only warning I will give is that they had far too few portapotties when we played the semis there in 2012. Many missed much of the 3rd quarter waiting. If it makes a difference between whether you choose one more chilly one, it might be better to pass.

If money were the only issue, it would have been done long ago. While raising the field sounds like a simple prospect, you need to see the terrain in the surrounding area. Raising the field would force flood water toward lower areas such as a home directly across the street from the field. It would also make the field higher than the street at its west end. I don't think there would ever be support for installing turf at GW.

The houses by Duchon are at least low 7 figures (maybe higher) there's literally nothing that can be done unless they pick another field somewhere.
