i can think of a thousand better names than starkville, but alas, the locals probably love it and would only change it when someone modestly progressive rips it from their cold ignorant hands. fun fact, starkville used to be called boardtown.

The Starkville area has been inhabited for over 2100 years. Artifacts in the form of clay pot fragments and artwork dating from that time period have been found east of Starkville at the Herman Mound and Village site, a National Historic Register site that can be accessed from the Indian Mound Campground. Shortly before the American Revolutionary War period, the area was inhabited by the Choccuma (or Chakchiuma) tribe, who were annihilated about that time by a rare alliance between the Choctaw and Chickasaw.[SUP][6][/SUP] The modern early settlement of the Starkville area was started after the Choctaw inhabitants of Oktibbeha County surrendered their claims to land in the area in the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek in 1830. White settlers were drawn to the Starkville area because of two large springs. A mill southwest of town provided clapboards which gave the town its original name, Boardtown. In 1835, Boardtown was established as the county seat of Oktibbeha County and its name was changed to Starkville in honor of Revolutionary War hero General John Stark.

MSU isn't actually in Starkville, so why not change it back to what it used to be: State College. If that's good enough for Penn State it should be good enough for us, plus it sounds sorta classy.

They changed it to Mississippi State, Mississippi some years ago (well after we became a university), and it's a mouthful to say. Call the location State College and eliminate the Starkville reference entirely.

Watching ESPN Recruiting Nation right now, and I have already seen Harbaugh having a sleep over with a recruit, Charlie Strong Dabbing with a recruit, and Nick Saban dance in a recruit ' s living room while his family laughs at Saban and records Saban on their cell phones.

It seems to get recruits that even the biggest names in Coaching have to shame themselves for the entertainment of 17 year olds---if the recruit was highly rated enough Saban and Kiffin might have to do a version of "2 Coaches 1 Cup" in the living room just to get their signature on a LOI.

I fully expect our athletic dept brain trust to institute changes in the way we recruit after yet another ****** class. Of course, we will institute those changes about 2 years too late, pretty much copying what others are doing now, only they will be doing something new and fresh. I don't know why we expect the same people who bring you the pregame production at the Hump, for instance, to have any concept about modern day recruiting.

Change the name of Starkville cause some message board hero UM fans, that are absolutely nobody outside of a message board name, tries to make fun of it? You wanna change the mascot because these same people that mix good whisky with Coca Cola call Bulldogs "leghumpers"? The same people that obsess over sweaty teenagers at high school football practice? These people?

I have some of these same people as clients. They are 95% wannabes. They pull up in their 5 year old BMW that they owe more than it's worth, have a house too big for them with two mortgages, and they have an AMEX card they owe $15,000 on. Then they come to me for advice because they have not been able to afford to make estimated tax payments. Well right after they attempt to say something snarky about a piece of MSU memorabilia on my desk.

Keep in mind this is the poorest state in the union and UM sits in the confines of it. They are not well off gentlemen. Even though they want you to think it.

And these same people are in your head about the name of Starkville? You really believe football recruits see the word Starkville and believe there is tumbleweed rolling through town? If that's the case, why did u go to MSU?

so i am a liar when i say that i think its a terrible name and think its detrimental to what we, as a university, do? yeah, ok. people can have a different opinion than you about any varying subject and not be liars. its an opinion and one that i have held when we were murdering the bears in nearly every sport. its really not that complicated.

But did the name have any bearing on your choice to attend MSU in any form or fashion when you were college age? is it the consensus here that a 17 or 18 year old recruit, either academically or athletically, really has second thoughts about attending MSU because of the name Starkville? I would challenge anyone to pull aside any 17 year old and ask them what they think of when they hear "Stark". The most popular answer you will get is "wasn't he the guy who played ironman?"

facts vs perception are what we are talking about. i love and miss starkville, but having a name like that does it no favors in the eyes of people who have not stepped foot on campus, but only know the town because of its reputation which constitutes the vast majority of sec fans and college football fans. largely, the reputation is spread by visiting fans and media members.

Well perception doesn't seem to bother who matters. Enrollment is growing, Howland just pulled in a great class, and we are about to put a good baseball team on the field.

Starkville's problems are not related to the name. It's the small minds running the place.
