One of the ESPN guys (might have been Dr. Lou) said he would like to see the offense start off at the 40 instead of the 25. At least that way the offense would have to pick up a first down or two to get in FG range.

I like that idea. </p>

You'll have a lot of naysayers though simply because they like to see as many points as possible.

Because it could really extend a game and mess up programming.

I like the idea though.

if you backed it up to the 40 as far as the number of potential plays. Could you imagine a 6 or 7 OT game where all the OT drives started at the 40. The best way to do it IMO is to maybe back it to the 30 where it is a least its a rather long FG if you don't gain anything AND require all extra points in OT to be of the 2 point variety.

I don't see how it would make it last that much longer honestly unless we're talking about teams with absolutely no defense. Not sure how I would feel about this... had to see it would work before I say I'm fully behind it, but they could add another rule to force uneven scoring to try to draw the game to an end. Instead of flipping the teams (go offense first series then in the next OT go defense in the first series) if the scoring persists, make the team on offense have to score a TD along with having to go for 2 even on 4th down. If they miss, they other team has the option to kick a FG, but a TD will win it. If they get a FG, then the last team has the option to make it back on the field. I don't know if they get the TD if they should end the OT then or let the other team back on the field and try to go for a TD themselves.<div>
</div><div>Honestly... I'm not sure how something like that could work... but I'm sure they could set certain rules in play that could make the OT not last extremely long and still be fair.</div>

those extra 15 yards to start the drive would make a huge difference. I doubt you would even see many go to 3 OT

Just kick the mother-17-er off and play football like they do in the NFL. College OT = artificial football.

That said, starting at the 40 would be better than starting at the 25.
