1) How are you allowed to talk to recruits?
2) How do you get recruits to talk to you?
3) Why is Tobias Singleton's brother transferring from OM to MSU? Is he worried about his safety on that campus?

If you're an MSU fan with a blog, why are you able to talk to potential student athletes?

I've read on MSU's site that if I happen to find myself talking to a potential recruit, I'm not allowed to talk about MSU. Even if the recruit brings up the subject of MSU, I'm supposed to politely excuse myself from the conversation.

See here: Link

*DO feel free to engage in your normal daily activities. NCAA rules do not prohibit unavoidable incidental contact with a prospect or a prospect's parents, relatives or legal guardian(s). If you bump into a prospect or a prospect's parents, relatives or guardian(s), you may exchange greetings, but refrain from discussing the MSU athletics program. If you have a prior and established relationship with a prospect or a prospect's parents, relatives or guardian(s), you may proceed with this relationship, but avoid discussing the MSU athletics program.

As someone who used to work in compliance, I can tell you that you are walking a fine line here. Further, exactly how are you obtaining phone numbers of recruits? I cannot imagine high school coaches are passing out info to some guy that isn't associated with one of the big networks.

I just know that as a booster, I cannot talk to recruits. But Gene can.

Im not making this up.

This guy may never have given a dime to the university and may not be considered a booster. And if he's a student, im not sure how that's handled.

If you are a donor, have bought season tickets or joined the Bulldog Club, then you are in violation. If you are just a guy who watches MSU on TV, and has not done any of those things and is not employed by MSU, then you are walking a fine line, but most likely in the clear (barely). You are now media, however. So whatever you do, report the facts, do not promote any one school over another and so on and so forth. It may be worth your while to call Bracky Brett and have him give you more specifics, before we get a violation. If Hutson Mason doesn't come to MSU because you made him ineligible, then I will be mad!!

you talk to recruits about recruiting, i.e.:

What schools are you interested in?
I'm interested in A, B, C and D.

Really? Tell me what you like about A, B, C, and D.
I like this and that about A, B, C and D.

I don't think even Scout analysts/reporters are allowed to specifically push a certain school. Although, I'm quite sure it happens. They are allowed to ask general questions (see above).

but could you at least check with the Ninja before you embark on your mission? you don't want to be "that guy" just in case you're not really allowed to do it.. I sure as hell wouldn't do it, because I don't know the rules, but you might.

The NCAA ruled that a company, the Starkville Ramada Inn, was a "representative of athletic interests" when those two players stayed there and didn't have a receipt for payment of rent. The NCAA had no history or basis to call the Ramada that, so the NCAA made that determination AFTER the fact. So by their reasoning, any stranger that has no ties to MSU could give a recruit money, and if that players signed with MSU the NCAA would THEN call that stranger a booster and give MSU a violation. Or it could be a UM alum that gives recruits money, SUV's, tuition, tutors, etc. and the NCAA could ignore the whole thing.

P.S. The blogger needs to IMMEDIATELY take down his blog, stop contacting recruits, and get cleared by our compliance rep (Bracky Brett?) before proceeding any further.

Can someone send a link to the blog to our compliance guy? The blogger might not do it and could keep us from being able to recruit some of these kids.

but, it could very easily get us in trouble. Bracky Brett will ask that you stop. So would Dan Mullen and Greg Byrne.</p>

Go ahead, I would rather the blogger look into and fix it. I don't care if he has a blog, the more the merrier really, but I just want him to be sure he is in the clear.

and no that's not suppose to be snitches..

I say blog away dude. <17> it. If your just asking about how a visit went and stuff I can't see the harm in it. However, I do remember Byrne saying that he had passed the test to contact recruits.

Id say just identify yourself as an independent source "so and so.com" rather than "MSURecruiting.com" and I think you'll be okay.

Keep the tidbits coming man

after all we've been through with private dicks, and Ridgeland whores sleeping with NCAA investigators, and Madison Central OL pussies lying about $ handshakes?

How crazy is it to think this blog is nothing but a creation of some Venture Technologies Mississippi fan geek designed solely to create trouble during recruiting?

[yes, there are black helicopters in my world].

I like the site, I like the news...but make sure it's okay and that you are following all rules. I might would also change the way articles are written...not any of this "hopefully we'll get him" stuff. Try to write more objectively and neutrally.

Be more like the guys on independent sites like the Junction.

shmuley, you might be on to something...i'd like to hear the source's thoughts on all this feedback he's getting, whether he's looking into compliance or that's already taken care of, or kiss my *** or anything.

As others mention, this looks pretty risky for MSU. Also, I think the LAST thing we need is yet another recruiting website.

If you're serious about getting into this business and covering recruiting... please drop me a note. There is always room for a site that provides news on the Bulldogs.
However, I must urge you to go about this in the right way. You certainly need to contact Mississippi State to learn the rules of the game. I've had too many conversations with MSU officials and know that if you don't conduct things under certain regulations you will cause MSU to file secondary violations. I know it doesn't sound right, but I promise you State files violations all the time that they had no control over.

If you need help connecting the dots or would like any advise on who to talk to... please email [email protected].

Bottom line... we all want what's best for MSU.

Thanks,

Wardlaw

video a guy's game from the bleachers without ever making contact with him and send it to the coaches. As a booster if you spot someone that you think we are overlooking, you are encouraged to collect newspaper clippings on the player and forward those to the coaches. I have done this, scan youtube for anything about the guy and forward the link(s) to the coaches. I don't think that there is anything wrong with that since it is a public website. Nothing is wrong that is if you are not the person that posted the video. Also, I was told that if you ever did run into a recruit, NEVER bring up where you went to school and discuss nothing about college or sports with them. Shake hands, say nice game and move on if you have to say anything at all.

I can assure you the NCAA doesn't give a **** about what you or any of us think about it. If he's going to talk to recruits, he damn well better get the MSU compliance staff's sign-off on it. Otherwise, none of us are going to be happy about how this turns out.

Rebel acting like a State fan doing this to try and get us in trouble. 1st post on this board and they've been interviewing recruits for YEARS but just now decided to do a blog? Why were they interviewing them then if they weren't gonna put it out there before? HUMMMMM Something Stinks bad. Pretty easy to find out who it is though. IP number and track that down. Wouldn't it be interesting if it were from Venture Tech?

That would be a hell of a lot of trouble for a Mississippi fan to go to to try to pin recruiting violations on MSU. Plus, even if he did, it's not like the NCAA would know him by his Internet name anyway. They'd know him by his real name. It may possibly be someone who has an existing recruiting site that wants to add another site marketed as an MSU site to increase traffic (in which case, I'd bet he has dozens of different sites each promoted as tied to a specific school), or as you say, just an MSU fan who may not quite understand all the hoops you have to jump through to do this without breaking NCAA rules.
