It looks like the crane buckled under a load and crashed over the fence. Am I just looking at this wrong? Sorry I don't have a screenshot to upload.

Also looks like a large concrete piece landed directly on the sidewalk just over the fence. Hope noone was hurt

OSHA is a pain in the *** when a ditch collapses on itself, they will love this. Looks like the back end of a truck mounted crane, wasn't one of the stationary ones.

No injuries reported, happened about 7:15 this morning. I'm not the most knowledgeable in this area, but I have a hard time seeing this as anything as overextending or overloading the crane. This piece is one of the largest single pieces of facade that is at the top of the stairwell on the northeast corner. There are some other pieces that seemed to have a similar mass above the north entrance, but those were lifted with the red crane.

The worst part is it fell onto a normally busy sidewalk. Since the construction started, students use that path to get to mcAuthor, B&N, and Giles, even in the summer. Had this happened an hour later, pedestrians would have been walking there.

Yea, it's a hydraulic mobile crane. No idea the capacity, my guess in the 75-100T range. No idea if wind or an excessive load was an issue, but usually, those things don't just buckle for no reason. OSHA is on the way, without a doubt.

Slight breeze today, but mostly calm. You would be more knowledgeable about the weight issue.

There will be an investigation by the contractor, owner of the crane, and probably OSHA. If the operator/owner were found at fault (attempting to lift the piece outside safety windows like wind, etc.), them the operator will probably be fired, the owner will have to pay a fine and do additional training/documentation. It depends on what the findings are and if anyone is at fault.

Some other factors to consider are things like crane setup (was the ground under the crane stable, were mats used), rigging of the piece, equipment failure/malfunction due to lack of maintenance or maybe just a freak failure, etc. Maybe it's simply a failure of the steel in the boom. All kinds of things will be looked at and considered and not all point fault in a specific direction. I'd be interested in following this to see what happens because like I said, these things don't buckle for no reason.

There are so many cranes in Louisiana, LSU can't...

...use them all on the Tiger Stadium expansion. We should get one from down there.

Normally the crane would fall over before the steel would buckle. Looks like a problem with the integrity of the steel in the boom.

The crane operator won't even have anywhere to sit. At least the students won't be the only ones screwed.

Seems like I have heard about several crane collapses fairly recently. I guess they just don't build 'em like they used to.

No expert on cranes here, but that sure doesn't look like a 100-150 ton crane to me. Looks much, much smaller.

I looked a little more into it and my guess is 75-100 ton. It COULD be a 65... It's not much smaller than a 75.
