Maybe this will be the wake-up call for the city of Kansas City, MO and the state of Missouri needs to get their sh*t together and build the Royals a ballpark in downtown KCMO. Otherwise, the Royals are coming to Kansas, too.

The Chiefs and Royals have given KCMO and the State every opportunity to get stadium deals done, but they simply cannot walk and chew gum at the same time. My own, admittedly novice opinion, is that when you elect government officials solely based on their position on your favorite culture war issue, you run the risk of electing nincompoops that are ill-qualified to do the real work of governing. Governing is often complicated, always boring, and is rarely worthy of the front page.

For me, a Nebraska transplant living on the Kansas side - I welcome the idea of both franchises moving 20-30 minutes closer to my house. My preference would be to see the Royals in downtown KCMO, but won't object to the suburban ball park closer to home.

Oh - and KCMO can say goodbye to the 1% income tax that all professional athletes pay the city when they play here. Several million dollars a year in lost tax revenue. Meanwhile, Kansas will be planning for the Super Bowl and a Final 4 in 5 years.

KCMO near could figure out how to get development around the stadium complex. It just further deteriorated and became more of a mess.

What’s wrong with the current multi million dollar stadiums?
Facilities themselves appear to be fine, but the area and lack of development around the stadiums is rough and getting rougher. Other than the giant parking lot of tailgaters, the current setup is very antiquated.
At one time there was talk of the Royals going downtown and developing the area around Arrowhead into a Power and Light east for the Chiefs. Guess that idea is now over with both teams likely bolting.

They haven’t worked on Kaufman in years (structurally). Cracks in the foundation, slabs, and seating areas. Seats are old and worn looking.

Seems like the economic life of professional sports venues now is around 20-25 years. The Broncos are currently planning a new stadium to replace Empower Field which is 24 years old. Seems silly, but I don't spend alot of time trying to understand the first world problems of the billionaire fraternity.

I do NOT get that one at all. When I first heard about it, I didn't believe it.

The Broncos stadium might not be that old, but it’s clearly not as nice as some of the fancier and newer stadiums. It feels a lot more like Nebraska’s Memorial Stadium than the Raider’s stadium in Vegas, for example. Coors Field is older but still feels new and fresh. Broncos stadium is just an old school design that’s simply functional.

The reason the stadium is being replaced “early” is because the new owners are filthy stinking rich, and they want one. It’s as simple as that. And they want one enough to just go build it without the usual arm twisting of tax payers and politicians. They will own more of the surrounding property that they will monetize. There will be a retractable roof so that they can monetize year round, and get a Super Bowl.

Pat Bowlen may have wanted the same thing 25 years ago, but he wasn’t nearly as wealthy. He needed public funds and had to accept the limitations that came with that.

Fair question. The Royals have claimed that repairing and maintaining the current stadium will cost as much as building a new one. I’d like to see their work on that. The Chiefs were content to build a new stadium at their current site when the Royals moved downtown; but KC voters said ‘No’ to the downtown ballpark last year. Kansas immediately swooped in to both teams and said they’d make a deal to finance with bonds they already have in place.

For me - having a MLB and NFL team in town is awesome; going to the games is awesome; new stadiums are awesome. I’m excited for this development.

Sounds like a dome is in the works so they can host a Super Bowl eventually

I hate the idea of taxpayer funding stadiums, but the fact of the matter is the chiefs are moving now because it didn't happen. And that is terrible

Totally true. Billionaires pretty much run the country anymore. Do you have a problem with that? Too bad.

Taxes were the key in all of this. Jackson County has a special tax on workers. My brother in law worked at a bank there although he lives in Olathe. When he worked in Jackson County they took more out of his check than when he worked at home. As I understand it, the taxpayers there did not want any extra taxes which why have voted against the stadium(s) coming to their area.

The Star Bonds are interesting. They designate an area to qualify for star bonds. In our city, they designated an area downtown containing an Old Chicago, upscale hotel with YaYas and some more stuff. Anything you purchase in that designated area has an extra tax added to it. The money collected from the extra tax funds the projects in part. As I understanding it, the area of Legends will be a designate area so when you go for games there and eat in that area you will pay a bit higher sales tax on everything.

At least that is how I understand it all. I live in Kansas and this is used a lot and it is sold as not needing to cost taxpayers anything but anyone coming into town will pay it.

They are in the portal.

Good, arrowhead sucked a$$…in the middle of nowhere, with no infrastructure around it… reminds me of the overhyped Rose Bowl. No restaurants, no hotels…nothing.

Going to be located up against Kansas raceway, which has grown into a great entertainment dining destination. Look forward to visiting the new $4+ billion retractable dome, where I don’t take my life in my hands anytime I leave my hotel.

Kansas City MO has turned into a shi*- hole/hot bed of crime. #BlueCities. KC getting exactly what they deserve.

The heart of KCMO was terrible 50 years ago and it’s maybe worse now. The area around Arrowhead is kind of a weird mixture of crappy stuff, bad roads and bad access.

It will be Kansas City Kansas. Sounds like they are building close to the speedway which is much more developed then where arrowhead is now. Sucks losing arrowhead but the location is much better
It's my understanding that it will be on either the SW or SE quadrant of the I435/I70 Interchange in KCK. The Speedway, Sporting Stadium, NFM, etc is on the NW quadrant. The Chiefs new headquarters will be in Olathe, where I live....so 20-25 minutes from the new stadium. Maybe Patrick Mahomes will move into my neighborhood :).

It was mentioned that in addition to Super Bowls and Final 4s, they'd be able to host college football playoff and/or bowl games there, too.
