I was too young to attend due to the weather, but have been told this was maybe MCs greatest win which was also over HF. 93 yard drive in rain storm with game ending as time expired with ball falling on top of MC player in the end zone.

He does have a point. Palatine's achilles heal defensively does seem to be their struggles against good running teams. The Fremd game was not neccesarily indicative in a couple of ways: A.)they took advantage of injuries that occured during the game and spent the entire second half running right where the starting LB was out; B.) That particular game is SUCH an intense rivalry and the emotions are strung so high that it's not always a representative sample of either team.

Truth be told, I think the team will tell you the season was coming very easily to them up to that point (despite the Stevenson loss..they know they outplayed them) and I think they thought the Fremd game would just fall into place like the rest...and they payed for it.

Against Conant, their bruising RB ran for 343 yards in the rain...BUT, he couldn't get that 344th yard on 4th and goal at the 1 with 4 minutes left in the game..and that's the key. We have 4 defensive starters and the guy who was the 4th LB out with season ending injuries. Considering that, I think their "bend but don't break" philosophy has worked quite well. There's been only 1 team to score over 29 pts against them...Fremd..and since they're averaging 29 pts a game on offense, that works out for them most weeks.

To me there are two keys to Palatine winning:
1.) Limit Loyola's big plays..Both OPRF and Brother Rice were used to getting easy TDs on big plays. Palatine's defense is very, very good at limiting those. The OPRF RB broke a 51-yd TD run, but that was about it..No other plays in either game over 50 yds by either team.
2.) Figure out Loyola's defense early. Going into the OPRF game, OPRF had averaged giving up 11 pts per game. They figured them out and had 35 pts and a 16 point lead at halftime. Against Brother Rice it took them almost 3 quarters to adjust to their speed advantage, but eventually they did , and the OL took over the LOS and they scored 4 touchdowns in 10 minutes of gametime.

Win or lose, I can guarantee Palatine will not be outplayed. I love the heart and determination of this team. If you have a chance to watch the replay of the game on CN100, watch the screen on Brother Rice's last 3 and out. Their star Smalling, who I think goes 6'1'' and 195 lbs is blocking Anthony Portera...who's 5'7'' 155 lbs soaking wet. Portera blasts Smalling backyard, fights off the block, and ultimately makes the tackle for no gain. To me, that one play epitomized Palatine's character and fight this season.

Great clip! I was in 7th grade and was on the Evanston sideline watching that Qtr. final game. I had never heard of St. Rita before then. I've always remembered how physical that game was and how big and mean Rita seemed to be. That was my introduction to CCL football.

I was using it as an example of how I believe the game might turn out Newt. I have watched almost all of Palatine's games this season. Their run defense is what worries me. None of the teams have as well rounded an offense as Loyola. That is my opinion. Games this season for opponents rushing:

Yah it is and had you mentioned that in your initial post if likely makes your argument more relevant.

Look, I don't think Palatine beats Loyola Saturday. Couple that with lousy weather - it could get ugly.

I'd be licking my chops if I'm Loyola seeing their defense on film.

The biggest threat to a CCL school in those days was a flare-up of mumps or measles (due to lack of vaccination reqs in catholic elementary schools) - a mumps outbreak decimated the Rita roster in 1986 and as a result they lost in the first round to CPS Kenwood Academy 12-zip in one of those Wednesday games. KA was summarily dispatched 36-0 by St. Laurence the next Saturday.

LOYOLA 35 PALATINE 10 (This game hits home, literally. Born and raised in P-town. Played PAFA, went to St. Theresa. Work in Palatine and a bunch of co-workers kids attend Palatine. I have always respected their program and even though I grew up in Fremd's boundary, I would always root for and attend Pirates' games. I will most likely be at Lamps and on the Palatine side with good friends/palatine grads. I hope it's a good close game, but commonsense tells me that the Ramblers may too much for the Pirates. Good luck to both teams!)

While that's all very true....they won all those playoff games. Stats don't play the games, players do. Further corroborates the "bend but don't break" philosophy kinda... I honestly like Palatine's chances in this one...especially if the weather is bad.

Warner Saunders attended Corpus Christi HS - at 4620 S Parkway (MLK Drive) - which was a former synagogue, and now a Baptist Church. Corpus Christi evolved into Hales Franciscan. Warner played basketball there and in college at Xavier of New Orleans.

Unless you are playing fantasy football, rushing yards don't mean as much as points on the board. The Pirates playoff average against 3 playoff teams is 23.
