Chicago Catholic League, Week XIV

Lost one of our members over the weekend: St. Laurence. I don't think anyone saw the Vikes coming on like that this year.
And anyone who attended the game over the weekend almost lost a member as well.

Holy schnikes. I forgot BMac! Not acceptable! I'm running laps around the baseball field now. Please accept my heartfelt apologies.

8A: Marist vs Loyola
neutral field [2015] Loyola Academy (Wilmette, IL) 42, [2015] Marist (Chicago, IL) 21

In '93, LA beat the 'Skins 14-0 in the playoffs en route to the championship.
In '95, 'Skins beat LA 34-7 regular season, beat Moline 1st round, lost to Palatine 2nd round, went to Prep Bowl playoffs, beat Fenwick in OT, then lost to LA 20-8.
In '96, regular season LA won 38-7.
In '97, regular season LA won 8-3.
In '98, regular season LA won 13-7.
For the 'Skins, it's all about Brendan Skalitzky (mother must be Irish). This kid is a cold-weather guy. Loyola's cold-weather guy is Marwede, who should be wearing a leather helmet and playing both ways.

6A: Crete-Monee vs Montini
neutral field [2015] Montini (Lombard, IL) 28, [2015] Crete-Monee (Crete, IL) 21
The Warriors lost to BR 49-21 and Prairie Ridge 52-33 - their only 2 losses.
Broncs defense is starting to let up some points, forcing their offense into playing all 48.
I see a whole lot of points in this one.

3A Tolono Unity vs BMac

Rockets only losses coming against solid teams: Monticello, Maroa-Forsyth, St Joe Ogden. BMac only to St Larry. This should be a wide-open game. I like Jonathan Ward, can't stop him even if you know he's getting it.

Letting up some points lol!hats off to PR god that TO is hard to defend but we knew we were going to give up some points to that team.letting up some points lmao! All of PR points were legit now as far as the other 3 playoff games only 7 out of the 28 points were legit points the rest came off of the second and third string players just so you know.

The 20 points given up to PR has been the most Montini's defense has given up all year and for a team that's averaging 50 plus on teams I'll take that any day.

I'm not sure how many of the practices LA has are indoors at Northwestern vs outdoors but it seems to many of the mistakes they had on Saturday were related to their lack of regular practice in game-like weather conditions. Maybe I'm wrong. I hope the whole team or at least the special teams has practices outdoors this week..though LA is out this whole week for teachers inservice/Thanksgiving break.

Interesting observation. Loyola being out this week means that that they could practice outside during regular school hours without running out of daylight. But, even if they could practice outdoors this week, the snow on the ground is problematic. It's safe to assume that LA's field is snow covered at the moment. Do you practice on that when you know it won't be that way on Saturday in DeKalb? I don't think so. Do you clear the snow and practice on it just to replicate outdoor conditions? Too risky given that the footing would be icy. I think indoors is their best bet.

Ramblin, I think it's possible (seems to be warmer for the first half of this week so it'll melt, if not melting already) though I agree, I doubt it will happen. I just feel that LA didn't seem all that confident in running their normal offense for the 1st half of the game (running much more than passing) plus the long snap errors (which accounted for at least 9 pts) I believe are attributed to the not practicing in game conditions (forecast will be in the mid twenties for the game) they'll more than likely play with gloves on again which of course limits feel of the ball. The ball itself will be hard and slippery. They may be acclimated to this by now but I'm guessing Palatine practiced outdoors most of the days in leadup to the game and generally seemed more smooth and relaxed in their play. Just my $0.02.

The previous 10 games to PR MCHS starting defense has given up 7 points so i guess by comparison 20 is a lot. A couple of stats stand out to me 34 first half points allowed all year, a plus 38 TO ratio, a 3.2yd rushing/attempt allowed. Fully 1/3 of the opponents plays have gone for no gain or a loss. Poor field conditions effected the speed of their defense as much as the offense against PR. I think it will be very difficult for CM to get any ware near their 41 pt a game average. Will they break a big play or two probably will it be enough... i don't think so 34-20

Snow was plowed off the field yesterday.

Not often. Maybe a couple times throughout playoffs.

There are no lights at Hoerster Field. Also, The other athletic facility that has lights, the west campus is at least 10 degrees colder and much, much windier. It is 60 acres of open baseball, lax and soccer fields that were built on a huge hill.

Having the indoor option is the the best way to be productive during the longer, midweek practices when it would be miserable otherwise.

Thanks LAGuy for insight on the Hoerster being plowed and how many times they practice at NU. IIRC, the LA Cube announcers talked about it during their broadcast last Sat plus I know my son, who still is in touch with LA football alumni friends, talk about it (mainly how lucky they are to have the option since back in the day (5-6 yrs ago) they'd be suffering outside practically 100% of the time). I asked my kid who's still there to ask some of the players if they're practicing indoors mostly or outdoors, still waiting for an answer.

The hill is brutal even in the spring for baseball so having to be up there in November really stinks but it's the only way to get in a two hour practice after school.

Most likely staying at school this week since the field is cleared and daylight is not an issue.
