When LaDarius Owens arrived on campus with a bevy of
other highly touted prospects for the infamous Big Cat Weekend, he
didn’t know exactly what to expect.

When he found out that a home run derby and a pie-eating contest was on the agenda, and football wasn’t, he was relieved.

“We did nothing football,” Owens said. “That’s what made it so great.”

Auburn is hoping this year’s crop of recruits will have the same
experience when it hosts Big Cat Weekend II on the weekend of May 28.
Approximately 25 of the Tigers’ top targets will be on campus for the invite-only weekend, according to AuburnSports.com.

Ten of Auburn’s 32 signees were present for last year’s event, which
focused less on football and more on fun. They were: Owens, OL Eric
Mack, OL Shon Coleman, WR Trovon Reed, LB Jake Holland, LB Jawara
White, DT Kenneth Carter, WR Jeremy Richardson, WR Shaun Kitchens and
LB Jessel Curry.

“It was a stress-free weekend,” Owens said. “Just being down there,
even though we were atAuburn and we were being recruited, we were just
having fun.

“It’s way better than a camp because you get to have fun all weekend.”

Last year’s events didn’t go without consequences, though.

Auburn was flagged with six NCAA recruiting violations, was forced
to halt its recruiting of six prospective student-athletes for six
weeks, six
Auburn assistants received reprimands and assistant coach Trooper
Taylor was prevented from recruiting off-campus from July 31 to Nov.
30.
Three of the six players (Curry, Mack and Reed) still signed with the Tigers despite the six-week contact ban.

The controversy centered on an impromptu rolling of Toomer’s Corner
with hundreds of fans, most of whom heard of the event on Auburn
scouting Web site message boards.

Auburn will seek to strike a fair balance between cutting edge and compliant this time around.

“We want to continue to be creative on the recruiting trail, but we
know at the end of the day it’s really going to be about rolling up
your sleeves and really working hard at it,” coach Gene Chizik said at
his Signing Day press conference. “You can be as creative as you want,
but if you don’t work hard, you’re not going to get these guys if
you’re not going to build those relationships.”

rolled a tree with toilet paper? I'm calling obvious and blatant ********. Apparently the auburn beat writer isn't an alabama graduate, or if he is, he is unable to hold Veazey's jock.

You can't simulate a game day experience as part of a recruiting weekend. Seems kind of stupid, but I see how it's against the rules. Kind of like you can let a kid walk onto a field, but letting him run out of the locker room onto it would be against the rules.

Here is what went wrong per NCAA rules

13.10.5 Prospective Student-Athlete's Visit.

A
member institution shall not publicize (or arrange for publicity of) a
prospective student-athlete's visit to the institution's campus.
Further, a prospective student-athlete may not participate in team
activities that would make the public or media aware of the prospective
student-athlete's visit to the institution (e.g., running out of the
tunnel with team, celebratory walks to or around the stadium/arena,
on-field pregame celebrations). Violations of this bylaw do not affect
a prospective student-athlete's eligibility and are considered
institutional violations per Constitution 2.8.1.

While
the university did not publicize the event, the information was posted
prominently Saturday afternoon on the three major recruiting Web sites
that cover Auburn and on the marquee of at least one area restaurant.
No source was given for the information.

Additionally, when the group arrived at Toomer's Corner, seven police officers were present for crowd control. Aubie, Auburn's mascot, was also in attendance, suggesting a planned event.

13.10.6 Introduction of Prospective Student-Athlete.

An
institution may not introduce a visiting prospective student-athlete at
a function (e.g., the institution's sports award banquet or an
intercollegiate athletics contest) that is attended by media
representatives or open to the general public. Violations of this bylaw
do not affect a prospective student-athlete's eligibility and are
considered institutional violations per Constitution 2.8.1.

In
videos of the celebration, an off-camera voice introduces several of
the visiting players one-by-one, announcing each player's name,
position and hometown before the crowd chimed in with a loud cheer,
although the voice does not appear to be that of an Auburn coach. If it
was a university employee, it would be a violation.

13.10.1 Presence of Media during Recruiting Contact.

A
member institution shall not permit a media entity to be present during
any recruiting contact made by an institution's coaching staff member.
Violations of this bylaw do not affect a prospective student-athlete's
eligibility and are considered institutional violations per
Constitution 2.8.1.

Members
from several media outlets, including the three recruiting Web sites
and the Opelika-Auburn News, were present during the recruits' rolling
of Toomer's Corner while wide receivers coach Trooper Taylor and running backs coach/recruiting coordinator Curtis Luper were
in attendance. Photos appeared on all three of the recruiting Web sites
shortly thereafter. Two sites had video, in addition to the O-A News.

if a recruiting violation occurs at Auburn or Alabama, the Auburn/Alabama rival police will be all over it in a heartbeat. I'm sure the SEC and NCAA offices have already received loads of phone calls and emails from Bama fans over this. Just a normal Tuesday I would guess.
