Jimmie from Oakwood, Ill., writes: Any word on a short list of candidates for the Mississippi State head coaching position? I have heard Boise State's (Chris) Petersen and TCU's (Gary) Patterson among others. Also, do you think Florida's offensive coordinator (Dan) Mullen would jump at a chance to coach in the SEC?

Chris Low: One of the guys Mississippi State was interested in was Louisiana Tech's Derek Dooley, but I'm not so sure Dooley is ready to make a move right now. I like Mullen and think he's done a really nice job at Florida, but there might be a couple more in this conference who're even more ready, namely Florida defensive coordinator Charlie Strong and South Carolina defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson. Strong interviewed at Vanderbilt when Bobby Johnson got the job and deserves a shot somewhere. Johnson was at Mississippi State for several years before landing at South Carolina this season. Johnson has head coaching experience, has recruited all over the southeast and knows what it takes to win at Mississippi State. Somebody else to watch is East Carolina coach Skip Holtz, who was in play at Arkansas last year before the Hogs landed Bobby Petrino.
