"It's not like you can recruit the same athletes to Mississippi State that you can to all of the other programs (mentioned, Georgia, Florida, LSU, Alabama, Auburn)." ***** anchor probably speaks the truth.

of course we beat Florida and Georgia, were the closest in beating Auburn, and we don't pay nearly as well as Auburn.

LSU owns our asses, talent does not matter.

That is such garbage. We have a number of players on our roster who had offers from Bama, auburn, lsu, etc... We will sign players this year with offers from those schools. We may not get Julio jones's and aj greens but we can get talent. We just need to keep good coaches around and we will win.

Our starters are usually pretty good, but we have never had SEC caliber depth throughout our entire roster. We are getting there with Dan and staff. If you don't have depth in the SEC, it's very tough to win SEC games in the 4th quarter. We did that this past year because we have more quality depth across the field. The more Dan recruits, the better quality depth we will have, and that is where we can catch up with the rest of the SEC.

but the best talent? That remains to be seen. If we can keep winning, we'll be able to attract more of the hotshots. And it's not a secret that we have to take developmental type guys and work with them. But come gametime, we had better 'talent' than Georgia this year for sure, and were damn close to Auburn. Alabama and LSU are the only schools that at the moment, completely outclass us. And it showed in the results.

it is smart for us to recruit the state of Mississippi. We're not going to land very many national type recruits- I'm talking about THE top player in Florida, not just some guy in Florida.

If we're going to get a highly rated player, odds are, they're going to be someone from Mississippi. See Norwood, AD, Pegues, and etc. Also, we have to find diamonds in the rough, or maybe more accurately coaches that can evaluate talent and develop it as we have now. Mississippi has those kinds of player every year and every once in a while, one of them turns into a Brett Favre or a Jerry Rice. More than likely, we find a guy like a Kevin Dockery that is a very solid player, and there's nothing wrong with that either.

We're not going to have a USC/Texas/Alabama class where it is a bunch of four star guys and a few five star guys that are finished product type players every year, unless there is a year with exceptional talent in Mississippi and we land all of those players.

So, yeah, I do agree with him that we aren't recruiting the same athletes. I don't think he was necessarily slapping us in the face.

And Relf probably isn't 260, but I would say more like 240-250. If he was 260 and it was muscle, I wouldn't care since he is supposed to run over people.

However, I do think we can be a double digit win team and be in the Top 25 in recruiting. There may be a time down the road where we are able to go out of state and grab a big prospect from AL or GA, but it's gonna take time.

We've signed 2 4* recruits from out of state since 2003. Our big name guys aren't going to come from out of state very often, which is why years like this in MS when there are a ton of solid recruits are really critical. We have to get as many as we can, because usually they are the only highly rated guys we get.

Mullen really only has 1 way to recruit. Get the top prospects in MS, get after a few guys from GA, AL, and FL, then fill the rest using the best of the rest of MS. He's done that so far, and his ability to evaluate talent has helped create SEC caliber depth across the field for us.Signing guys like Gay-Harrison who has an SEC type body instead of signing someone like Karlin Brown are the types of signings that will help us down the road with improving the quality of our depth.

I've noticed that too about our diamonds in the rough- Justin Cox is a two star guy. But you will be very hard pressed to find someone that has seen him play that doesn't like him. Benardrick McKinney is 6'4" and can easily grow into an OLB or DE. Rufus Warren is 6'5" and 238. Justin Malone might have been a Dandy Dozen if he had played football as a junior. He is already the size of a legit SEC OT. Joe Price is one of our smaller players, but he is argueably our fastest player too. He can help us out on special teams as a kick returner and maybe play RB/slot WR/CB. And Market is a guy that can play DB and run the wildcat.

A lot of people don't care for Nick Redmond, but he is 6'6" 300 pounds and might be serviceable with Balis and Hevesey coaching him.

I agree completely. And here is a little of how it boils down in the OL between Mullen and Croom:

Croom 2006: Kyle Love 6' 1.5'' 305
J. D. Hamilton 6' 4'' 295
Mark Melichar 6' 5'' 276
Chris Herrera 6' 3.5'' 275

Croom 2007: D. J. Looney 6' 2'' 280
Quentin Saulsberry 6' 3'' 275
Dakota Merritt 6' 6.5'' 298
Addison Lawrence 6'4 250
Croom 2008 None
Croom/ Mullen2009 None
Mullen 2010 Blaine Clausell 6' 6'' 295
Eric Lawson 6' 7'' 330
Dillon Day 6' 4'' 265
Archie Muniz 6' 6'' 260

Mullen 2011 Justin Malone 6' 6'' 306
Joey Trapp 6' 5'' 285

The size difference here is huge. Mullen's OL haveanywhere from 2 to 5inches on just about every OL Croom brought in. That's huge for us because we need an offensive line that moves people around so we can run the football effectively and protect the QB with some big bodies. I have to think Hevesy plays a huge part in this too, but I think it's clear the type of people we are bringing in now have a lot more SEC ready bodies than the guys Croom brought in.

You forgot to list Damien Robinson was signed by Mullen. He is 6'8" and 330+. That guy will be a monster.

Damien was a 4 star so i didnt count him. But he certainly fits into the mold of an SEC ready body that Dan is bringing in that Croom never did.
