that the people of Flora have always been against going to school in Madison ever since Madison-Ridgeland and East Flora merged. It's not anything personal towards the people of Madison or anything like that- it's just that the people of Flora want their own school. They are a small town, and in Mississippi a lot of those small towns identify themselves with their high school. When the schools in Madison merged, I think they felt like that identity was taken away.
I was there when the schools first merged, and the kids from Flora for the most part kind of kept to themselves. There were some fights in school between kids in Flora and kids from Madison-Ridgeland as well.
I know it sounds cheesy, but Madison Central's football team and Coach Justice is kind of what brought the communities together because we saw how good we could be at football with everyone together.
The people of Flora still want their own high school. They were upset when they chose to build a school in Gluckstadt, but it's strictly a numbers issue because of overcrowding at MC. There were something like 800 students from Gluckstadt at MC and only 100 something from Flora. And Flora is not growing. Their best hope at their own school is to hope that people start moving out there as Gluckstadt becomes bigger and bigger and land becomes more scarce and expensive. And it could happen one day.
