with some of the coaching vacancies opening up, I’m surprised Cignetti’s OC & DC aren’t getting more play…seems they’ve been with him for a while…his DC has been up for the Broyles award…if I was a team with a coaching need, I’d be all over either of them…feel his coaching tree is going to bear a lot of fruit

Seriously. Bet on yourself and pick up another 25 million on a single contract.

We ARE that team.

We could have had Cignetti but he wasn't a BIG NAME and he is outspoken...

Their DC is a stud...but I think he might just really like where he is at right now??

Did Cignetti’s name ever come up when we had our opening?

A lot of you were slobbering on O’Brien’s knob. He’s driven them over a cliff. Dodged a bullet there.
It isn't the fans job to hire a coach. We don't get paid millions to do so. There was a guy who got paid millions though and he laser focused on one coach. Rhule was seemingly a good hire if it was 2018, but he was hired just as college football was changing dramatically. Cignetti should have been a household name because he has never had a losing season at multiple programs but Rhule was known as a builder and pre-NIL, open transfer portal that seemed like a good thing. He is very stubborn though and has a "my way or the highway" mentality. Just a terrible mindset for the current climate in college football because there is so much change. Most schools hire the wrong coach at the wrong time. Probably smart to suck it up though and eat into that buyout, saving 10 million might be half a roster down the road.

Cignetti is an anomoly, what he is doing is unheard of. He's a 1 of 1 and what he's doing has never really been done before. Its not fair to compare other coaches to him.

And we gonna keep doing it. 6-2 huh? Clowns. Watch the Minny game where the kkk put a BEATDOWN ON ON EM. kOOL=-AID DIP SHITES. oH ****, kURT KICKED THEIR ***. jJealous homers. wake up and educate yourselves. Prove me wrong. USC is crap, but put some money on it. I am batting .930 right now. Dispute is with my previous posts since Matty was hired. Exactly. Go mow ur lawn.

This board mirrors the boosters and people who have been decision makers over the past 25 years. They need to be sufficiently wowed. Press conferences need to be won. A coach with transfers from a lower division would never do.

I don't agree with a lot of stuff on this board but I believe u are right. It's easy to point at "we should've hired Cignetti" hindsight. But if we had hired that dude the same guys on his jock now would've been dog cussing the administration for doing so. Like you said Nebraska fans want to be wowed. As a whole we value press conferences and what was said waaaay too much. I've said it before as long as you love TO, live the walk on program, embrace the past, and speak highly of the state as a new coach you give yourself some runway. We take it hook, line, and sinker every time.

That said I'm not near as down on HCMR as the vocal guys seem to be. I didn't think this would be some magical year. Gotta have good/great line play for that to happen in this conference and I never seen it happening this year. It'll eventually determine HCMR fate here. Hopefully he gets it because outside of that I like a lot of what he's done. But unfortunately for him that's a non negotiable in the BIG.

Cignetti was on Bama’s staff when Bama had multiple starters test positive for PEDs. I keep wondering how a team goes from being pushed around by just about everyone to having a physically dominant team. I have a tough time believing it’s all been coaching.

Boyd’s shadow has NU cringing at the thought of players using any supplements. Bama had multiple players test positive for PEDs a few years ago (while Cignetti was there) and nothing happened to them. With all the millions of dollars on the line for players and coaches it’s naive to think that there’s not something wrong when a team goes from being a doormat to physically dominant in the trenches in a matter of months. Now let me take off my tin foil hat….

He’s a Nick Saban disciple. There’s a formula. Our coach cares more about Instagram than tough love.

True, but everyone shuts up when you start piling up wins. At that point you get to rise above the noise and tell all of the outsiders to stay in their lane. Better yet, other fans will police their own. Let the man cook.

Cignetti was hired by a doormat program. It was likely his only P4 opportunity. They gambled and hit the lottery. That works to this degree less than 1% of the time. Rhule had rebuilt 2 programs most recently a P4 program. You tell me if you’re the AD and your job is on the line at a traditional P4 football school, which guy are you going to hire?

Cignetti was a D2 and FCS coach. No Big Ten or SEC team other than a doormat like Indiana or Purdue was going to take a chance on him with no FBS head coach experience

I will say the only school that went totally crazy was Notre Dame when they hired Gerry Faust right from his high school job, yikes!

James Madison is in the sunbelt. He was 52-9 with them. I don't blame Nebraska for not choosing him but to act like he was some diamond in the rough is idiotic. If an AD is afraid to hire a guy who is 52-9 and never had a losing season in 13 years because some boosters or fans might be mad then I guess that fan base gets what it deserves. We might be getting what we deserve.

I feel the same way. The lack of expectations at Indiana really does help.
Nebraska Football is a racket, our fan expectations are so low that no matter the product people pay money, millions to see a 3, 5, 7 win team. It doesn't matter. The only thing that could mess this up was to bring in a person with actual principles like Cignetti. He would realize the place was sick and he would endanger all of the incompetents who are raking in millions while not providing any service. He might have even turned us down once he realized the resistance he would get at a place that makes so much money for doing so little. Our expectations are the lowest in college football because people watch and spend no matter the outcome. Nebraska will be great again once that stadium sits half-full for a game. That is the only time a rebuild could happen because then there is money to be made.

With that said why would it take so long to make the jump. It’s not like he had some magical season and Indiana jumped on him and outbid everyone - he’s been passed over for years. Excited he’s getting his due and his paycheck.

Ok you have to go back to 2022 when Rhule was hired, James Madison was in its first year in FBS, Cignetti was unproven yet in FBS. Lance Leipold was excellent in D3 and D2 not as great in FBS. It’s not automatic like Cignetti has done. Would you as a power 2 big ten SEC AD hire someone not proven at the highest level unless you didn’t have the budget for big name?

Financially, UNL athletics has is made for the reasons you stated, the loyal fans. It’s like a coffee shop somehow being able to get customers to pay $5 for a cup of plain black coffee, or a pizza joint getting $18 for a crappy basic pizza that is worth $4. If there was an alternative in Nebraska the Huskers would have to perform better or they would have near empty stands.

He probably interviews about as well as Eric Bienemy.
