The CL has fired nearly all of their staff. They're about to charge money to read their website. And now...they want columnists who will work for free! (the catch is you have to be a local - sorry, Coach34)

Great quotes here..

http://kingfish1935.blogs...er-hits-rock-bottom.html

"So let me get this straight,'' Amy Hervey wrote in a comment on the story. "The C-L fires (aka early retirement) its staff that had the experience and ability to coherently put three words together to make a spot for free guest columns by a member of the general public, while rolling out a fee to read online. They want content with zero production costs but they still want us to pay for the privilege of reading it. Sounds like something only Gannett could dream up...."

delivered to my house each day. Every morning I wake up and open up the paper. It has gotten to the point that it is no longer worth reading anymore.

The only things I enjoy reading now are what Marcello writes on State and you can basically read those on his blog.

I pay for it a year at a time so I am not due to renew until December but I really doubt if I will actually renew it. It has gotten so thin and filled with nothing of any real substance.

I generally look in most mornings on the Internet, but if you stop that, I MAY occasionally buy a paper at the News Stand.
Only thing I will truly miss is the Obits, and that will get to me, sooner or later.

OK, so support your local paper, or they will disappear.

Just where is the State Times, or the Jackson Daily News?

They called me a couple of years ago and offered me 7-day delivery for the same price for 6 months. I said no. She said but it's the same price, the weekday papers are free. I said, you don't understand, I don't want them even for free.

I love this building, and KPF does great work but don't you think it's a little short sighted for Gannett to be building a palace for a crumbling empire? Yes, the building was built in 2003 but the signs were there then. I really think they just wanted to keep up with the NYT and their Renzo Piano designed tower in Manhattan.
