Good afternoon everyone. We (posters) always gripe about the all state teams, so I thought it might be fun if we debated a Class 4 Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year. I honestly have no clue about most of Region C and D, so it would be nice to hear about the stars from that part of the state. If you can provide stats to support your case it sure would be nice. Once we get the nominations I will put it in poll and we can select the Non-Official Preps Posters Class 4 POY (Offensive and Defensive)

I will start be selecting my Region B nominations.

Offense: Robert Barlow Jr ( RB Dinwiddie). Rushing: 222 carries 1,665 yards (7.5 yards per carry) 30 touchdowns. Receiving: 17 catches 167 yards, 1 touchdown. All Purpose; 2,446 (222.4 yards per game) 13.5 yards per punt return, 30 yards per kickoff return 1 touchdown.

Defense: Austin Sims (LB Louisa). All Jefferson District Linebacker and Defensive Player of the Year. Watching him hit people makes me cringe. He takes great angles to the ball and rarely misses a tackle. Has done a very admirable job filling the shoes of Brandon Smith's big play abilities. Do not have statistics on him, but maybe a Louisa faithful can provide those.

I just found out ho to add Barlow's highlights. I am old and computer illiterate.

In no order.
My Offensive Player of the Year candidates
Robert Barlow- Dinwiddie
Dresean Kendrick- EC Glass
Wesley Graves- GW Danville
Jarrett Hunter- Louisa

Defensive Player of the Year candidates
Payne Bauer- Sherando
Austin Simms- Louisa
Holden Fritz- EC Glass
Zavione Wood- Salem

Wesley Graves has 151 carries for 1,437 yards (9.4 YPC) and 31 TDs. He also has 5 catches for 87 yards and 1 TD. He’s extremely underrated and I hope he’s near 100% this Friday! Robert Barlow is definitely deserving of the offensive player of the year. He is the toughest football player I’ve seen all year.

My apologies I forgot to add Gage Mannon to my list. Pulaski County isn’t 9-2 and one of the best defensive teams in 4A by default. Gage should definitely be a defensive player of the year candidate.

For Offensive POY I think Keenan Cupit deserves consideration. (He could also be a defensive candidate)

Cupit, J.Forest-----180 att-----1523 yds-----8.5 ypc-----152.3 ypg
These were his regular season stats.

Also,
Persinger, Salem-----148 att-----1219 yds--8.2----- ypc----135.4 ypg

Persinger's numbers would be better, but missed a game during the regular season due to injury. Also, split carries with Leftwich and Wood.

Defensive POY candidates:

A. Gallimore Pulaski Co 89 total tackles, 24.5 TFL's

E.Gallimore, Pulaski Co. 11.5 sacks

Zavione Wood- I don't have his stats, but he's definitely one to consider. The eye test would put Z as a candidate for defense or offense. He loves defense and he has a nose for the ball.

Louisa's Aaron Aponte deserves more recognition too. He just as easily could've gotten JD DPOY. Here's his 3 sack game against Orange. He is #6.

OPOY - Dresean Kendrick (Glass). He's better with the ball in hand than anyone else in class 4. Phone Booth agility is second to none. In one word, the young man is Special. Only guy with an argument is QB Griffis from Broad Run. He's probably got eye popping stats that could match or succeed Kendrick. If they happen to both make it to the state semi's, the winner of that game will end up winning the award IMO.

DPOY - Could go a lot of ways here. DL Matei Fitz (Tuscarora), DL Holden Fretz (Glass) and DL Adrian Williams (Louisa) are all unblockable and have lived in opposing backfields all season. Fitz is slightly longer than the other two but all three of them have relentless motors, great get off and use their hands like college players. The 3 of them should all end up first team all state IMO.

Some very sound choices @one man. It's neat to get a coaches point of view. I spent about an hour watching video of Griffis the other night and suggested @mbonape1 check him out. After he did so we discussed how impressed we were with his arm strength, accuracy and ability to throw his receivers open. Honestly, I haven't seen an arm like that in Class 4 in some time. His receivers are big targets and run very good routes as well. I have seen some Tuscarora video, but did not specifically look at Fitz. I have seen plenty of Fretz and Mr. Williams video. Respect both of their abilities. Have you watched any video on our ECU commit D'Anta Williams (#10 or #56). Not saying he is in the class of the above noted defenders, but would like your opinion. He has struggled with a shoulder that keeps popping out of socket, but has really played well since moving to defensive end. He now has 17 sacks, 74 tackles, and 31 tackles for loss.

@olemissboy, I was very impressed with Graves when he came to Dinwiddie. He is a load to bring down. Any idea about who he intends to play for at the next level.

Graves has been pretty impressive this year. He moves very well for a 215+ back. I was impressed when I saw him vs Glass.

I know in our Region Malik Newton has been an animal once again for LT..Kid has 1500+ yards and 30+ TDs and averages over 10 yards per carry.

Defensively I like our kid Kenny Gallop, Jr. a SS that can play with the best of them, Kid does it on both sides of the ball. True definition of all purpose

O - Dresean Kendrick - QB/E.C. Glass. Robert Barlow - WR/Dinwiddie. D - Zavione Wood - LB/Salem. Austin Gallimore - LB/Pulaski County. Dresean Kendrick for Glass has only gotten better week by week. He has picked defenses apart all season and he has been an absolute nightmare for opposing teams secondaries to prepare for. I definitely believe that Kendrick can at least play at the Division 2 level. Maybe even Division 1 who knows. I am a 2015 Salem alumni and I would love to see a Salem/E.C. Glass showdown at Willis White Stadium next week. Dresean Kendrick is arguably one of the best quarterbacks in the state of Virginia and he can beat you with his legs or his arms. It is a pick your poison with this young man. Robert Barlow has always been a star for the Generals of Dinwiddie High School. Barlow is not the biggest player on the Generals roster, as he only weighs about 155lbs. However this young man gets the job done. He is very shifty and he is very quick. I know that Coach Billy Mills will dearly miss Barlow after graduation. This year was a rough year for the Generals, as they finished the regular season 5-5. However, Barlow has been a star and has helped the Generals tremendously. I really think that this Generals team will make a big run in the playoffs. The win last Friday against a solid Monacan Chiefs teams was huge for Coach Mills and the Generals. It shows that Dinwiddie has a lot of heart on their team and that the team plays with a lot of heart. Losing to teams like Prince George and Thomas Dale during the regular season wasn’t pretty for the Generals especially since those are teams that they usually beat. However, I feel that Barlow and the Generals are headed in the right direction to make a lot of noise in region 4. Zavione Wood has wrecked havoc on the field all season long for the Salem Spartans. This man plays football like his head is on fire. Flies all over the field. Wood has shown that he can beat you with his legs on offense and defense. He has great vision running the ball and he is able to find a seam and hit holes very quickly. Defensively, Wood has gotten better and better. He gets off his blocks well and he makes great reads. Wood is only a junior, so the future looks bright for Coach Holter and the Spartans. I will also mention that Zavione Wood is the second leading tackler on the Salem Spartans football team behind Senior linebacker Bobby Pinello. I could easily see Zavione Wood playing at the division 2 level. He is an obvious leader on defense for the Spartans. Austin Gallimore leads a nasty defense for the Pulaski County Cougars. Gallimore plays with a lot of passion and heart and he has only gotten better each game during his time spent as a Cougar in Dublin, VA. Like Robert Barlow for Dinwiddie, Gallimore isn’t the biggest football player on the field but he always makes his presence felt. Gallimore hits hard and he rarely fails to wrap up or miss a tackle. He does a great job making reads. Him and his brother Ethan Gallimore are a great duo on this Cougar defense. I look for the Gallimore’s to pressure Dresean Kendrick up in Lynchburg on Friday night and to make Kendrick feel uncomfortable in the pocket.

Nice call @DEVILSLB99. Gallop was on the Pilot News preseason watch list #21 757 prospect I think. I thought about him, but did not have any stats or media reports to go by. Thanks!

I admit I don't know individual players too much outside of Region C...

On offense I'd go with Wake Forest commit Mitch Griffis from Broad Run. After former Michigan commit Tim Baldwin transferred to Patriot, some thought BR would fall off a bit. Mitch stepped his game up another notch and BR now sits as one of the favorites to win class 4.

On defense Matei Fitz. He led Tuscarora's defense in 5A State Championship vs Highland Springs 2 years ago as freshman, and last year as a sophomore set defensive schools records, including season/careers sacks with 18. This year he has been double/triple teamed as offenses plan their game around him yet he still dominates.

Good stuff everybody! Awesome to see so much talent in our region. I'll just speak on Louisa guys because they're all I've really seen this year besides the teams they've played. No doubt there are other studs throughout the region.

Offensively, I think you have to go with Jarett. He's the JD PoY and just does unreal things. His balance, vision, and ability to make people miss is crazy. Plus, the fact that he has played 3-4 different positions for Louisa means he's smart and can adapt, not just a one-trick pony. He's definitely surrounded by other big time playmakers too, which can help give him more opportunities. Louisa has guys like Robinson, X. Hunter, Washington, Shelton, and Morgan who could all arguably be PoY material too.

Defensively, it would tough to choose just one guy in Louisa. Sims got DPOY and is definitely deserving of it, but Aaron Aponte, Adrain Williams, Derrick Barbour and Alex Washington are next level defensive players. Aponte, Williams, and Barbour look basically unblocked every snap. The DC told me they have over 30 sacks between the 3 of them so far this year - Aponte with 14 of them. Washington does everything from safety to LB, is lock down in coverage and does a great job coming downhill on the run.

I see a 3-4 look most often, but I've also seen some 3-5 looks with Washington walked down. It looks like the D-line also does some shifting around too and doesn't always line up the same way every time. Not sure exactly what it is or if it's called or checked into, but it seems to work well!

Nothing surprises me with recruiting at the big schools. With huge contracts, television rights and the unreasobable demand to win coaches just will not offer kids who are tweeners. Offering a preferred walk on spot has no risk.

With new academic standards, the ease of determining a kids eligibility, and NCAA graduation rate expectations it's become even more pressurized and tough to get a ride.

Good luck to the young man. I hope he gets a chance to extend his football playing career and most importantly a sound education.

Sounds like this kid is a good person on and off the field but only thing I’m guessing is his grades or gpa is affecting his recruitment, smh now if he had a 2.8gpa or under or somewhere in that area of grades most school will overlook u in d1 then last result is a d3 school or something will offer him last minute

Graves has a 3.3 though. Davis from Heritage was the same way as far as getting his offers late. Some solid playoff performances really helped him.

I don't know Graves personally to speak about his academic performance but from what I've heard from people very close to him and the GW program, his academics are not an issue. If I had to guess as to why he hasn't gotten any D1 offers it is probably for the same reasons Lala Davis of Heritage didn't get much interest from Power 5 schools...because of his lack of top end (break away) speed. Don't get me wrong, he moves really well for a back his size and I would definitely take him on any high school team but when you are recruiting for D1 Rbs, especially Power 5 caliber, you better be able to take it the distance against guys that run a sub-11 sec 100m. I personally have not seen that ability from Graves be it in person or on film.

Nonetheless, he will get an opportunity to continue his academic and football career for free or for a tremendous discount, regardless of where it is. At the end of the day, that's what matters most.
