6. Mississippi State is officially staring 4-8 in the face.

And that's giving State wins over Troy and Kentucky.

I'm not really sure they get those both done.

If State goes 4-8, 1-7 in the SEC, that would mean that after all the Dan Mullen hysteria in Starkville, after five seasons Mullen's SEC record would be 14-26. That's just four SEC wins better than Sylvester Croom did in his five years at State. So Mullen would be averaging .8 wins a year better than Croom.

Is that good enough?

The trajectory is certainly pointing down.

SURELY Mullen is aware of this - he has to be. I'm really hoping that he isn't satisfied with being only slightly better than the Golf Cart connoisseur he replaced.

Well he certainly could be right. Winning in the state of Arkansas or beating OM in the Egg Bowl will both require very good games on our part. Its all about the schedule. If we flipped the Auburn and Arkansas games this year we likely win both at home and we would likely still beat KY on the road which would be 3 SEC wins rather than potentially only getting one because we are having to play both of those on the road.

I'm beginning to wonder whether it's the job/program instead of the coach. Jackie's 5-7 years out of 13 notwithstanding.

I could give you a laundry list of reasons with very few having to do with the coach. Maybe I will one of these days when I feel up to it.

We can beat Arkansas but it would require a very good game on our part. I watched them against USM, they wouldn't be able rush the ball up the middle against us. Arkansas looks better on defense than they do on offense at this point.

I'm not saying I'm pleased with Mullen of late or our trajectory, but the Croom-Mullen comparison doesn't take account of how much more difficult the SEC West is now. From 2004-2008, SEC West teams other than us went 194-118 (.622) and won 1 national championship. Since 2009 SEC West teams other than us have gone 191-82 (.700) and won 4 national championships in 4 years.

And there again is the nasty schedule. It appears at the moment that Arkansas is more beatable than OM BUT we have NEVER won a game in the state of Arkansas. Like I said, the Auburn team we just lost to was pretty much a win had the game been played in Starkville.

It also doesn't take into account Croom non-SEC losses to teams like UAB, LA Tech and the mighty Black Bears of Maine. Say what you want about Mullen but at least he doesn't embarrass us by losing to crap teams.

That is the one compliment that I’ll give Mullen, that he has stopped the embarrassing and inexcusable losses to inferior OOC opponents.

But do we see much real improvement beyond that? It is something, but is it really enough?

It would be nice to get the Auburn and Arkansas games where we have one on the road and one at home each year. Since these two programs are currently at a level where they are very beatable for us at home, but tougher for us on the road, it sucks to have them both on the road when we already pretty much have to mark LSU, Bama, and now aTm as automatic L’s no matter where those games are played.

A big part of the problem does seem to be related more to other SEC teams rising, than us falling. Now even Vandy and Kentucky are recruiting well, and soon they be a very tough win as well. Was21 hinted at something inherent with our program--or venue-- that goes beyond coaching, but declined to explain. Dude, are you trying to say it's just too hard to recruit to Vegas, or is it something independent of recruiting?

Trivia question--Who was the last regular season opponent MSU beat that finished the season with a winning record?

Answer: Florida in 2010, who finished the regular season 7-5.

Trivia question: Who was the last football HC who finished his career at MSU with a winning record?

Answer: Darrell Royal (1955)

Keep that in mind before you start screaming for Dan's head...

Look at the bright side, with Mullen it takes all the stress out of watching the games. Just do a quick check of the point spread and if we are favored there is about a 95% chance we will win, if we are the underdog about a 95% chance we will lose. Then just sit down with your hot dog and coke and enjoy the game because you already pretty much know the outcome.

Yep, I absolutely hate having Bama and LSU at home because its just a pure waste of a home game. And you are right, I can now likely add TA&M to that list at least while Manziel is there. Its always a better schedule when the toss up games are the ones at home.

Allen getting hurt severely hurt our running game since they could stack the box. We only threw 11 passes the whole game lol, 6 with our backup QB for 3 quarters. But i agree our defense looks better so far.
