Toyota and Nissan are huge boosts to this state. But they would never be placed where they are if not for the attraction of semi-skilled, lower wage laborers best suited for assembly-line manufacturing jobs. Hello??? I'm not bashing on the rest of the state by any means by the comment either. Harrison County would have done anything they could to get such a plant. But that does not change the fact that the Coastal counties make up a huge percentage of the tax revenue.
So, yes, the rest of the state is getting better. And yes, we have a bunch of State and OP grads living down here in order to find work, while you probably rarely run into a USM grad who works around there - though I'm sure it happens.
All I know is, I've been to several academic conferences in the Southeast and several large-scale job interviews (trying to figure out where I want to work) where many of my fellow interviewees were from Bama, State, Ole Miss, and even Florida, FSU, etc. I've never been asked if I went to an SEC school, and I've walked out with a job offer while friends at State and Bama went home without them. So I guess my little 'ol Southern Miss education wasn't so shabby after all.
Honestly, I wish State the best of luck against every opponent they play, unless they are playing us. USM fans don't hate State (we might hate OP), we just aren't gonna take any crap being thrown about why the series went away or why we don't play each other. The recruiting possibilities are the real truth. It's certainly not our stadium size or any of that crap. So if everyone would just agree to live in reality together, this could be a much more friendly "non-rivalry" game.
