I feel bad now for yelling "Make Emory a Memory!" in the fall of '83. Yelled until some gray haired dude said with disgust...."Damn students....when he got here he was gonna save the program now you can't wait for him to be fired."

RIP Emory

At the time MacArthur Hall was the athletic dorm. we had the cafeteria on the ground floor. He had just been announced as the new football coach. He comes into the cafeteria and goes through the line. He comes over to our table which had me and 4 or 5 other Baseball players at it. He asks if he could sit with us. We say sure thing coach.

So we are eating and he is starts cutting into his steak and he starts asking us questions. Now we are not offering the info that we are all Baseball players. After about 5 minutes, he finally starts asking questions about us that make him realize that we are Baseball players and not his Football players. We all smiled when the light bulb went on in his head. He sat there the rest of the meal and continued to talk to all of us instead of dismissing himself. He was a nice man.

approach was simple. Legend says the showers cleared out pretty fast when he made his appeareance after practice to clean up. Seems he had a way of embarrasing others in that setting, only Glenn Collins could hold his own.

My favorite Emory Bellard joke.

Bellard's son runs in and says, "Daddy, can I go outside?"
Bellard answers, "Up the middle, son. Up the middle."

That is so true. I also think that if that can be said about someone when they die, then that is a good commentary on their life.

His system was good for us. Some of those losses in '80 & '81 were heart-breakers we should have won. Seems to me we were hit by unusually high # of injuries to key personnel just as we were ready to take the next step. Bond was already beat to hell by '82. Couple of his losing seasons had 2 or 3 close losses.<div>
</div><div>We took a step back after Bellard until Sherill.</div>

when I was a HS senior, I was invited to an alumni function to meet Emory with other area prospects (real prospects, which I was most definitely not). Emory showed me the same amount of attention as the other guys, which I appreciated. Anyway, Cheryl Prewitt had just won Miss America and was there as well. Emory asked me if I wanted to meet her. Of course I did so he and I walked over to say hello. Emory taps her on the shoulder and as she turned her false eyelash fell and stuck to her cheek. It looked like a big black caterpillar was crawling on her face. Emory was struggling to keep from laughing and I was turning red trying to hold in. Emory composed himself and said, "well, I'll leave you two young'uns to visit." He winked at me, patted me on the shoulder, turned and walked away.

I saw him on campus a few years later. He recognized me and we had a laugh together. He was a good guy.

My extended years at MSU were over and we were already gone when he came, but enjoyed watching his teams play at State. I liked him, too.

Wonder what the Bear will say to him when they meet in the better place?

All cliches aside, it is a very sad day we all knew would eventually come.

To say that I am sad, is the understatement of the month.

God Bless your Soul, Coach Bellard. For God runneth the Wishbone, in Heaven.

I wasn't there but still remember where I was as I listened to those final minutes. Biggest win in our history.
I was at the LSU win under the lights and 16-14 a few years later.
Thanks For the memories Coach!!!!

or someone like that I believe. She is a distant (very distant) relative but I haven't heard anything about her in 20 years. Last time I saw her she was still very pretty...just a little older.

Here she is in 2009....

hear the enthusiasm and fire in his voice and listen how much faster the call is than today. Still respect him today and want him to have some part of our program but dang, what a difference in now and then......

If memory serves, the undoing for Bellard was the fact that his teams were very predictable. Once the other teams realized that we only had six plays in the playbook ( with 3 of those up the middle), our offense could be stopped. But all in all it was fun watching the MSU wishbone kick ***. RIP, Coach B.

And this from watching ESPN Classic, but they always seemed to mix up the pass really well with it. It seemed like they threw the ball at least 20 times a game.

I watch some of these service acadmies- love to watch them in bowl games- and they almost never pass. I think that's a big mistake when you are running an option style offense.
