Coach Hall getting slapped?

Why have I never heard of this? True story? Bobby Knight slapped his glasses off in the middle of a game?

I found myself a fan of Knight. Not anymore. Seen the video while scrolling. If this is true I’m not sure how it’s not talked about more. That’s like an infamous moment. I can understand the Indiana hate now. How did nobody beat that man’s *** at least one time in his career? Like the guy telling Calapari he would kill him.

Did anybody take up for Joe B. when that happened? He take up for himself? I do believe he got revenge in the long run right? On the court.

I remember that. I was young, but ot stood out because my Dad and Uncles were going nuts. The way I remember it was they were shouting at each other and Joe B turned to walk away and Knight slapped him in the back of the head. And yes, Lynn Nance went after night, he was being held back but was yelling at Knight to come try that on him. Knight was a bully, but Nance would have beat the crap out of him

Just threw me a little off guard when I seen it. Knew knight was a nut. The scandal and throwing chairs across the court. Never knew Indiana’s head coach physically assaulted our head coach.

Joe B seemed like the nicest guy. Don’t know much about his time here. Only coach I seen my dad have a picture with. Had the blue wind breaker uk jacket on and Joe B was in a suit. Didn’t look like the soft type to take a slap and not do anything.

I gotta admit, I lost respect for Joe B when he didn't punch Knight on his beak. They had been friends before that, but a slap in the head means its on

Maybe the video I came across exaggerated the situation. Made it seem like knight slapped the dog crap out of him and his glasses went flying. Hopefully it was way more innocent.

We got the ultimate revenge later that season in the elite eight defeat of I think was an undefeated IU to advance to the 1975 NCAA final four. I think but am not sure I have the details correct—been a long time
I knew it was something like that or the next year maybe. That’s probably the best revenge Joe B could have gotten.

Yeah, the stills of it show them and neither of them have sour looks on their faces. To my knowledge there aren't videos of it. Joe B and RMK were big time buddies. Hunted together in the offseason.

Knight was a boor and a bully. He was rude, crude, and vulgar to the core. Of course it was a different time then but he should have been let go when he did the Connie Chung interview when he said about women, if rape is inevitable why not relax and enjoy it. If he said that today, he'd be gone. Perhaps one of my least favorite sports figures ever.

The absolute worst, it’s amazing that people defend this guy still. He’s a stain on the sport and Indiana basketball will forever roast in hell for allowing him to do those things.

Knight was the perfect lunatic coach for that sh*thole program and that sh*thole fanbase. The entire state is just one big cornfield ... they're all Children of the Corn. Explains a lot.

What a different time. Things were slower. Check out a video of Joe B. And Louisvilles coach fishing all day together. Pretty nice video and cool how things were just different.

Imagine Pope and Kelsey fishing together. Cal and Pitino fishing together😂

Not after that they weren’t. I don’t know what you’re trying to say about “neither of them having sour looks”. You should google what some of the players say about it.

Now that someone mentioned the guy trying to stick up for Hall I feel like it came back a little. I remember people talking about the ex fbi guy. Just way before my time it’s kind of like the Duke guy we hate. To lazy to look up his name. Latener. Ik that’s probably the wrong spelling. Ik it’s only right to hate him but I wasn’t able to witness the infamous moments that made him who he is to UK.

Joe Hall was definitely NOT cool with it,lol . That’s ridiculous.
Oh I have no clue just going off that pic. He better not have been cool with it. I just wish there was a video so I could see how serious it was.

Is there a way to rewatch that whole season? Would be nice if they had something close to the journey back then.

For those who watched UK when Hall was coach, was he a hardass or more of a soft spoken coach? I only ever got to see him in his senior years as a fan in Rupp. Always seemed very kind.

I'm only trying to say the pics of it don't show a Joe B that was insanely pi$$ed. However, I'm sure he was. Who wouldn't be? Since there's no video and I think I was 3 when it happened, I obviously don't have a memory of it. I've seen the interviews before. I think it was Greavy maybe. He basically just made it seem like they were all in shock, which duh. I think everyone would be...Something interesting to me, is it all "started" with Joe B saying something to Knight about him having his starters in late in a game when Joe B had subs in. He said something to Knight about it across the bench. Knight told him to worry about his team or something like that and then they met at the table. Obviously Knight crossed a line, but anyone that has ever coached a second of competitive basketball knows you just don't talk across the bench. I'm always surprised when I see it at the HS level. Just something you don't do.

I was 10 when he retired, but I do remember pretty vividly the last few teams. Granted, this was an older version of him but I always thought he was super nice and professional. I guess you'd say soft-spoken, but I just remember a guy that looked super professional and could be confused with a Baptist minister in appearance.

Bob easily. Hurley won his two rings but other than that he’s a fraud. Not a tough guy at all. Pope would ragdoll that guy.
Not a fight competition. Just an a-hole comp. We all.just assume Knight takes the title, but I think Hurley is a contender. Coach K would have to be a number 1 seed as well I think.

I can’t take his a holeness serious for some reason. Darn good coach. Just feel like he’s more of a whiney crybaby than ahole. Every time I see him lose it makes me laugh. He’s a punk for sure.

From what I read in the past here's the story: Knight was chewing the referees out and Hall told him "Give em H--l Bobby" and Knight said to Hall to "coach his own team", to which Hall said " Come on Bob, I'm just joking". Knight then slapped the back of Hall's head and replied "So am I". Nance, who was former CIA or Secret Service wanted to get ahold of Knight. A few days later Kentucky AD Harry Lancaster called Nance into his office. Nance just knew he was going to get fired. Instead, the AD told him that if anyone ever did that to Hall again, and he DIDN'T whoop their a--, then he would get fired. Amazingly, Hall and Knight actually remained friends after this and even Knight spoke at a birthday celebration for Hall. When I was growing up IU was our most hated rival with UT being the next. As much as I despised Knight when he was at IU, it would be somewhat entertaining to see him dealing with these prima donna college athletes with their NIL and handlers that are in college basketball today. I know he couldn't deal with them (like Saban knew and got out before it hit) but he sure could knock them down a notch or two before getting fired.

Another interesting connection: Lynn Nance who approached Bobby Knight after the slap later coached Mark Pope at Washington.

Where the hell is that AD? Can we get one like him please!

It wasn't that much, but it happened on National TV.... Knight was lucky the Lynn Nance was held back from getting to him... Nance was a former FBI agent that was about 6'4" and didn't play around... Knight was always a bully, but that afternoon he started something that he would have regretted had Nance gotten ahold of him.

He spoke at a golf outing in French Lick, IN. Our company was one of the sponsors. . I went to the bar when he got up to speak...Classic bully...
