Who honestly thinks Tyler Russell should get some looks next week?
I understand he is just a FR but we need someone that can put touch on the ball and/or anticipate receivers coming open on their routes and Ralph just cannot do these things.

I'm thinking he should play a little football, depending on how he handles the first few passes he throws. We should give him a few easy ones to give him confidence and get him in a rhythm. I'm not saying he should start or take the majority of the snaps but I definitely would like to see him come in - and not from the beginning of a drive to the end. I would just like to see him come in for passing situations. LSU had success with it, but Jarrett Lee is not a Freshman.

But he has to come in long enough to get a rhythm going. We can't just bring him in for a series in the middle of a game (after Relf does well at something) and have him throw three bombs. He needs those high percentage throws to get going.

Relf can't throw the ball worth a ****, and Bama eats up the run, so we need a plan B.

Apparantly, there is some bylaw in the athetic department going back to the origination of the forward pass that prevents ANY coach at MSU from doing this.

Dance with who and what has brought you to this point in the season. Yall get on Mullen for being too cute during a game and are now wanting him to change everything that works for us. Don't get it.

Chris Relf should start next week and we should stick to the same game-plan we've been employing. Pound the ball and look for opportunities to spring play action on them. And if this is working, you stick with it and ride it all game long.

HOWEVER:
I would have a very defined plan B game plan for next week as well, just in case Bama completely shuts off the run and we can't get the play action going. LET ME BE CLEAR: WE DO NOT NEED TO GO WITH THIS UNLESS OUR TYPICAL GAME IS JUST FLAT NOT WORKING. As in, we aren't really moving the ball any and we're not scoring points for at least 3 to 4 possessions. Also, let's assume Bama is up by at least 10 in this situation. If it's still 0-0, keep pounding and hope it opens up eventually.

This plan B would involve playing Tyler and really using the screen game with our slot guys and really working the short passing game. We don't really use the screen game with Chris any more because he kept hitting guys in the feet or throwing it behind them. With Tyler, I think we could execute this portion of the passing game much better. If Alabama walks up to attack this, then take some shots down the field. Think of a Houston-style offense, basically.

My reasoning for this is multi-faceted: 1) No one in this conference really does much of that, so it might require Alabama to do some things they're not really used to doing. 2) It would prevent Chris from taking a needless pounding in a futile effort when we're gonna want him at full strength for Arkansas next week. 3) It would provide a way to give Tyler some simpler things to do and get some experience in a tough environment on the road, an experience he'll need for the future.

AGAIN, WE SHOULD ONLY DO THIS IS OUR STANDARD GAME-PLAN IS BEING STUFFED AND WE'RE DOWN 10+. IF OUR GAME PLAN IS WORKING OR WE'RE SHUTTING THEM DOWN, POUND THE ROCK!

Do we have another QB named Russell or are you talking about the guy that has been rifling it 20 yards over the head of every receiver he has thrown to outside of the Memphis game?I'm no Tyler hater, but he has not been good in his playing time this year. Relf has some problems with screens and flares but when given time to pass down field has has been really good.

unless Relf gets hurt. He's not ready. If we see any passes Saturday, they should be from Relf on roll-outs. That's the only beef I have with our entire coaching staff right now. As far as passing goes, we're using Relf just like Croom used Conner.

What is Tyler Russel's number? 17....
What do i say when he enters the game? 17....
I know he is the better passer but that doesn't matter when he throws into triple coverage because he wants the home run...

Personally, I'd play him once we get down 14 points. Bama is going to blitz him, knock him around, probably pick off a pass or two. But, this will make the Russell fan club happy because he got to play, and it will save Ralph's body for next week's Ar-Kansas game.

We can grind it the whole game with Ralph- and probably lose 20-7 or We can play both QB's and get beat 31 or 34- 7- either way, we get beat.

It's just mind-boggling to me that people think playing Russell gives us a BETTER chance to win. These same people blame the coaches for his 3 and out against Kentucky. Amazing. Playing Russell against Bama means we have conceded the game and are just trying to get him some work.

watch the Fla game and know we are going to run. IF they put 8 in the box, it will be interesting to see what Refl/Mullen can do with that. I hope Tyler gets some reps so we keep Brassell and Singleton interested in us. The Fla game was not a recruiting toool for WRs. I think Tyler can do the job if he gets some rythym going. Cant give three plays every 4 weeks and judge him by that.

Take what has worked all season long (for whatever success we have had so far), throw it in the trash can and go with something else, like maybe subbing your starter QB with a thus farunproven QB who has not shown anyone anything (in a tough game situation). As an excuse for doing this say, "He needs to be able to get into a rhythm." Get upset when anyone questions this insane line of reasoning.

Yes, I know, What the hell do I know about anything? You Tyler should play fans are absolutely correct. First rate NCAA coaches always sub a newcomer for their first string QB in the big games.

Next Year I'll be back on the Tyler is our future wagon. Right now? Let's stick withthe guy who got us wherewe are.For thelove of MSU stay with what has been working.

edited to correct dumb as dirt misspelling errors.

Apparently the men we pay millions of dollars to make that decision feel much differently than you do. If Russell could get the job done- he'd be playing. I know you want him to play and there are many fans like yourself that always think the back-up QB could do better- but that's just not reality.

Reality is we haven't lost since we stopped playing Tyler Russell.

If Relf gets injured.... maybe. Or maybe we just run the wildcat for the rest of the game. Other than that, TR shouldn't see the field unless we're down by 30.

I think Russel has a chance to make a fine QB. He does not read coverage very well, gets hyped up and sails the ball five feet over the receivers head. Bama's defense is way to good to send him in. He looked great against Memphis but against LSU it was ugly as I remember.

Did they watch the LSU/Alabama game? LSU has crappy QB's, but, they ran the ball fairly well against Alabama. Also, LSU got some pretty good yards out of the option game. That is exactly the strength of our team.

I don't see any logical reason to stop doing what we do well right now. And I will go ahead and say that if the coaches started Russell, I would definately question that decision, and rightfully so. Relf deserves the chance to fail in the Alabama game.

It does suck that we are one dimensional, but thankfully we have a very good defense that can bail us out. Also, we need to try to shorten the game by running the clock because Alabama is more talented than we are. We must control the tempo to have any hope of winning. I can put up with being one dimensional knowing that in the next year or so, we will finally be climbing out of that one dimensional portal from hell that has seemingly lasted since the Allyn McKeen era.

Also back to the LSU game because I know someone will probably mention Jarrett Lee and his very nice pass completion. Jarrett Lee is an example of what happens when you throw a QB out there too soon. He was thrust into action, and he threw a bunch of picks. As a result, all of the LSU fans seem to hate him- at least before yesterday, and I think it really has affected his confidence. Now as a junior, he comes back with experience and is able to make clutch throws like that. That pass was one that he may not have made as a freshman. He is just now maybe starting to win some fans back.

That said, I really like Tyler Russell. I think he has the potential to be a very special QB for us. But for him to reach that potential he has to be developed and learn how to do the little things- like look off defenders, and trowing someone out there against Saban and Kirby Smart on the road is a very, very, very tough way to learn those lessons.

It really blows my mind that MSU people don't understand the concept of QB development. It's like people expect to throw QB's out there and until something sticks. Heck, I've even seen people beg for walk-ons to get a shot before in the past.

If we want to do something unpredicatable, why not come out in the flexbone, with some wishbone mixed in? Obviously start Relf. Have Ballard start at FB, Bumphis and Perkins as the wingbacks, and then split Arceto and Carr out at WR for the flexbone. Maybe put Brandon Henderson in at TE and take Carr out some.

I've seen us run some flexbone before with Relf, so I know that the staff has at least tinkered with it.

Then with the wishbone, we could put Hanrahan at FB, and then Ballard and Perkins at the halfback spots, and split Bumphis out at WR. Again, start Relf at QB.

I think this would catch them off guard, and at the same time, it would play to our strengths as a team. I know how hard it is to prepare for GT, and that's with people knowing that they're going to run the flexbone.

Also, do some stuff with some unbalanced lines and try to confuse them lining up.

Hey, it worked for Jackie in 1991 against LSU.

predicted all summer
listed AND mentioned it in my preseason SEC predictions

"LSU- 9-3 (5-3)- the demise of Les Miles is being talked up but not so fast my friend. Chavis is a good defensive coach and has talent to work with and the offense has too many weapons to be bad. Miles beats Saban in BR to put the LSU faithful in better spirits. Losses @Fla, @Aub, and @Arkansas"

Predicted LSU in the actual prediction thread for the game

easily 50 posts saying LSU would win...that excuses 1 little post worried about the way Miles has handled the QB situation

It's been common knowledge on this subject- giving me **** doesnt change that

you are a complete idiot.

You can claim something all year long but when you say the opposite to cover your bases - you are going to be called out. Please explain to me below how you thought LSU was going to win.

Its going to be a close game- and LSU getting the rest and extra
game-planning on defense will even it up alot. I predicted LSU to win in
the prediction thread because I had to after what I said in August- but
my gut tells me LSU turns it over on offense and Bammer wins by 3-6

against a spread offense they are stupid. Thats kind of the point with the spread offense. It doesn't matter if they know were gonna run 80% of the time. They still have to cover our WR's. If they stack 8 men in the box with 4 WR's.....evenToastcould throw for 300 yrds...

I think I've finally figured it out myself. When over 50% of his posts on something end up being right, and, conversely, the amount of his posts covering his *** on the same subject are < 50%....then it's a prediction. If it's the other way around, then it's just an observation, or thinking aloud, or some other ********.

Ok, so you picked LSU to beat Alabama. You also picked them to lose to Florida. So why did you start your own thread touting your fantastic abilities in picking one game right?

But Alabama has, consistently, one of, if not THE best run defenses in the country. We are a run first team. If we cannot get that going, it is going to be seriously ugly. I don't want to fix what isn't broken and I don't much like Russell playing anymore. If he was good enough to play he would be playing already. Dan has continuously stated that if both quarterbacks are good we will play 2 qbs. Obviously Russell is not good enough yet (if he ever will be). And I've been hearing that Farve is getting the offense down better than Russell, he also has a quicker release.

We played the flexbone option game against Auburn and it worked until the snap was fumbled. i would love to see us run some of this quite a bit.

I expect to see some new wrinkles. I disagree with the idea that we'll carbon copy the Florida game. Bottom line is that we won't be able to run the ball unless it's also possible we can complete passes downfield. It'll be interesting to see what we do; my expectation is that we'll pass about 15 percent more than we average.

there is absolutely no way we can hang with bama doing the same stuff we have in the last several games ... if we don't try something different it's over before it starts .... whether that's Relf or Russell .....SC didn't try to run the ball up their butt ... LSU managed a little but it still took going airborne to actually win .... and I really think Russell has not been given a FAIR shot yet

how can the kid not have a shot? Do you NOT think if he was the guy the ole coach would not play him? Im right there with some of the others. When he comes in im like Holy 17!!

But some of you just arent happy with the way we are winning and that baffles me. We are 7-2 and dominating most games at the line of scrimmage. Are we going to have to throw a little more to win Saturday? Probably but putting a kid in there that cannot run is not the answer. Bama will *** rape him and again, remember the LSU game. I think Russell has had plenty chances.

OK then just keep Relf trying to run a QB draw, option around the end, or downfield passing and just watch what happens ... or should I say what doesn't happen ......Russell might have had a shot in practice but he hasn't had much of a playing stretch since Memphis ...RELF WILL NOT WIN THIS GAME WITH HIS LEGS OR HIS ARM ....and I am going to bump this thread come next Monday

preface this with the statement that I hope TR is the next Joe Montana. Currently, however, he is not. If TR plays a majority of the snaps vs UAT, we will probably have another 6 turnover game and get blown out, for sure. Conversely, if we can control the TOPand not turn the ball over, we have a shot at winning. I think they're going to beat us, regardless.....but my gut says we win/
