Coach Mullen: give up special teams and take the reigns as OC

I agree with everything you said, but
what is strange is why Mullen is so against calling the plays? By nature he is a control freak and it would seem a control freak would have a hard time NOT calling the plays.
Either way, he needs to get this straight and quick or everything he's worked for will erode in a hurry.

I agree. At times, it has REALLY seemed like we tried to outthink ourselves on offense, becoming painfully more evident in the last two games.
For instance, we have used Dak for short yardage plays since game 1. That culminated in his passing TD on the fake QB power against Tennessee - a perfect play. But against Bama, we got first down on the 2 yard line, and left Russell in the game. The only explanation I can think of is that they didn't want Dak to take a snap under center, and they didn't want to go shotgun against Bama's goalline D. I guess. Then this week, we have fourth and very short in the redzone on a drive where we NEEDED a TD. So we decide to go 5-wide with Russell?? WTF? And before the play, even the blue hairs in the stands knew Russell was looking for Bumphis. So TAMU went man, and an extra LB sat on the slant from Bumphis. Result - FAIL.

Yep said the same thing during the game Saturday. My biggest issue w/ him so far (as it pretains to offensive play calling) is his ability to be adaptable based on what the defense is doing. Give you an example I was coaching the DL in the plaoffs last yr and after our defense had held Cathedral's O to 3& out our offense took the field ready to take control of the game. We are normally a passing team who sprinkles a few draws & counters every now & then. Well i noticed after the first 2 series they were dropping into a cover 3 and playing 7-8 yds off the WRs. I kept saying over & over to run "stops" & shallow crossers. He (OC) kept throwing deep & passes were getting closer & closer to getting picked sure enough our qb ended the game looking terrible & having miserable stats. My point is that *** seems to be somewhat hard headed at times (as most coaches are).
Agree completely. It also seems like we try to assume what the defense is thinking, and it makes us look stupid. Like when Tyler ran option to the short side of the field...it was like we thought, "I bet they'll never expect Tyler to run the option, especially to the short side of the field, this will completely fool them". But there's a reason we don't do that, because it doesn't make sense, so it doesn't gain ****. It seems like instead of playing to our strengths, we try to outguess the opponent even if it means going away from our best playmakers or our best play. There is no reason on earth that we shouldn't run a screen pass or two to Perkins every game, period. Even if it doesn't work one game, you have to try it because it has Huge play capabilities. But I feel like we've seen it against Ole Miss and Michigan, that's it. Why? Why when our offense is not moving, do we not resort back to plays that have worked? rant over.
Just a few comments of the ironic and smartass category. I of course agree with your blog article but couldn't pass it up. Maybe some other folks can pile on for a good ol' C34 bashing.
1. The one guy who constantly defends Mullen's special teams performance all the sudden wants him to give it up to focus on the offense. Riiiight.
2. Whatever will we do if Mullen gives up special teams since we are just slightly better than the bottom except for punting where we have a great punter?
3. "He is not ready to sit back and be a special teams guru like an older coach." - Guru...you didn't type that without laughing at the level of troll it captures.
