While I usually wait till around the beginning of August to do this, i'm so excited about Crooms being gone I couldnt wait

2008 prediction highlights-

1. Gloom for Croom- too many sheep were calling for Crooms to go bowling again, Coach said no
2. Sometimes you feel like a Nutt- predicted the Rebels to be back in a bowl
3. State to finally beat UPig
4. Fla to win the East over Georgia
5. Tenn to slide back some
6. SC with a top defense

2008 prediction lowlights-

1. Spurrier- he finally has the defense he needs in place, and his offense just plain sucked
2. LSU sliding down the West standings
3. Bammer was much better than expected
4. Auburn falling on their face
5. Vandy winning out of nowhere

SEC- 2009

East:

1. Florida- (8-0)- this is the best college football team in recent memory. 18 starters returning, 53 letterman from last year's NC team. Fairly easy SEC road schedule, with LSU being only tough game. And they get the week off to prepare for their trip to BR. This team is simply loaded and going to set some records.

2. Georgia- (6-2)- Richt is downgrading at QB and RB but returns a great OL. They have one of the conference's best WR's as well...Defense is very good at LB, not bad elsewhere. Tough opener at Ok State with a new QB, plus Tech in Atlanta leaves the Dawgs unhappy with going 8-4.

3. Tennessee- (3-5) The Lane Kiffen experiment opens in Knoxville. Only 2 starters return on OL, and only half of secondary returns. They will be back in a bowl game, only because the rest of the East is down this year. Playing Vandy at home gets them 3rd place in the East

4. SC- (2-6)- Being unable to change finally becomes Spurrier's downfall. He has been unable to recruit a good QB and refuses to pass protect against today's smaller, faster defenses. They are average at TB and WR, and take a step back at LB and the Secondary. While he has made their program better, I predict this is Spurrier's last season at the helm in SC. He figures out he just isnt getting it done.

5. Vandy- (2-6)- Vandy has tons of starters returning. They were very opportunistic in 2008, but their stats were downright ugly. They simply pulled the same thing Mississippi State did in 2007- win with TO's. They have to figure out how to score. A couple of transfers in at WR should help. 5 starters return on the OL. If this team can score at all, they will upset a couple more teams and return to a bowl- but playing at Tenn and SC puts them at a disadvantage.

6. Kentucky- (0-8)- tough year in Lexington. Schedule does them no favors, putting all their possible conference wins on the road. Only 12 starters return also. Defense will struggle and hurt this bunch- 10th in SEC ppg on defense 2008- and only 5 starters back in 2009. I think another coaching change takes place here with a retirement, and the SEC gets a much more qualified black HC the 2nd go around.

West:

1. Mississippi- (8-0)- after predicting the Rebs to go 0-8 in 2007, and calling a bowl return in 2008, I've had a pretty good feel for this team. This is the best group of talent they have had since the 60's. Offensively, they are very good. One of the top groups in the SEC at WR, a really good QB, good RB's, and a good OL make this team scary. Defensively, 8 starters return from the best team in the SEC West from November 1st on in 2008...They play a perfect schedule, with 4 candies OOC and getting LSU and Bammer at home. The Mississippi-Bammer winner goes to Atlanta.

2. Bammer- (7-1) Saban's team takes a step back offensively in 2009, they wont be as good at QB, RB, or the OL. But they have one of the nation's best WR's to go with some other good ones. They will produce enough offense to help one of the nation's top defense that has 9 starters returning. They were 2nd in the SEC in scoring D and yards allowed. The schedule is their friend too, but they do have to go to Oxford. They also get the week off to gameplan LSU. Other than Mississippi, VTech could take this bunch down in the opener, but 10 wins will be the worst this team does in 2009.

3. LSU- (5-3) They are just like Georgia in 2008- a top 10 team with too much schedule. 7 starters return on both sides of the ball, plus they enjoyed a top 3 in the nation recruiting class. On offense, they have 3 QB's that could lead this team. Jefferson will lead the offense, but people wonder what they will do with Russell Shepard, the nation's top QB recruit by some. They are loaded at RB, have 11 of their top 12 WR's returning, a good OL that includes the nations best LT. Defensively, they hired a much better DC in Chavis and will be much improved. But still have work left to do. The schedule is the SEC's worst- having to play on the road at Georgia, Bammer, and Mississippi. Florida comes to BR with a week off before to prepare.

4. UPig- (3-5)- Petrino's 2nd bunch is improved, but still has problems. 8 starters return on offense, plus the addition of Ryan Mallet. They are good at RB, will be improved at WR, and experience on the OL. 10 starters return on D to a horrible defense, Sylvester Crooms even scored 31 on this bunch. They have a good DL, but a long way to go at LB and in the Secondary....All SEC home games are winnable, even getting Georgia early may help. Defense will decide how this bunch fares.

5. State- sheep alert- (3-5)- The Dark Ages ended in Starkville, and State has hired an offensive coach for the 2nd time in a row. This one looks much more promising than the previous one. State returns its QB, top RB's, and some experienced OL. State also has other options at QB that should play some this year. WR is a huge question mark, and they will have to play some true Freshmens here. Look for State to put a RB or two in the slot to get its better players on the field. Defensively, the Dogs are decent on the DL and in the Secondary, and very good at LB. Very little depth, injuries could make this team awful.
State is fortunate that they get a struggling Auburn and Vandy early, even if on the road. Auburn is learning their 3rd offense in a year and a half, and Vandy has trouble scoring period. Look for State to make enough big plays in these two games to get over the hump. Mullen goes to a bowl in year 1 and shows the world it doesnt take 7 years to rebuild a program.

6. Auburn- (1-7)- Chizik figures out his *** should have stayed at Iowa State. Crazy boosters with Saban penis envy, no QB, and a rough SEC schedule make it tough for him in year 1 on the Plains. Somehow Auburn managed to be worse in scoring offense than State in SEC games. They are terrible at QB, solid at TB with Tate, average at WR, and solid on the OL. Defensively, they return 8 starters- with the strength of the D being in the back 7. The schedule did them no favors, and they could even lose to LaTech to open the season. Mississippi State is the key to their entire season. Lose that one, and 1-7 is staring them in the face. No way this team wins more than 3 conference games in 2009. Chizik should rent instead of buy.</p>

lost TWO first round draft choices,(offensive and defensive line men), and several others that were drafted...I think they have lost a lot, but everyone else seems to think that those guys don't matter. I think OM will do ok, but no Atlanta....Also, as we all know the QB position is only one play(one injury) away from not being that great.

If their schedule wasn't so easy I would probably argue them going 8-0. If they don't finish 6-2 or better in the SEC then they choked in my opinion. And they should wind up in Atlanta thanks to their toughest games being at home.
They got the talent to win and schedule is basically handing them a guaranteed 10 win season

or by beating a top 10 team at home? I'd love to see it happen, but I just don't see any better than 2-6 for us this fall.

Auburn- we won there in 2007 and should have won last year. We are much better coached now. Do you think they are? We even ranked ahead of them in recruiting last year. Our talent is as good as theirs

Vandy- We are just as talented and have more weapons to score with

Kentucky- we are probably more talented and their defense is going to be ******.

no matter where they are. I really hope you're right, and I do think we have a decent chance in all 4 of our road games this fall. But it's asking a lot from a mediocre at best team to win 3 out of 4 league games on the road.

I don't see anything too far fetched. I agree with you that UF has the best team in the country this year. If they play Ole Miss in Atlanta, they won't overlook them.

I do think that LSU will win the West though, I think the difference for them will be QB play. Jefferson really impressed me in the Peach Bowl.

I think State can beat three of the four out of Vandy, UK, Auburn and Arkansas.

While I think Mississippi will win the West, I don't see them running the table at 12-0 (8-0). I think they lose one or two games and make it to Atlanta.

Jefferson plus Shepard makes them really good at QB...but they have to play 3 hellacious road games while Mississippi and Bammer have it much easier...Bammer and Fla also having an extra week to prepare makes these games that much harder

I think we are more likely to go 2-2 on the road and 1-3 at home than 3-1 on the road. I wouldn't be surprised to see either happen.

To go bowling (as coach mentioned) we would also have to go 3-1 in OOC games. This will not be easy with us having to play GA Tech and Houston.

but I am counting on us being in better shape mentally and physically when we play Auburn.

1. Auburn is going to have to play their *** off against LaTech (who returns 17 starters) and they will give us a much better scouting report than we will give them against Jackson State.
2. Auburn can't focus solely on us this summer with preparation because LaTech won't be a pushover. I can assure you we have spent 3 times as much prep time this summer on Auburn than we have jackson State.
3. I also think we will outcoach them
4. They have been going downhill on offense the last 2 years and have added nothing to make them any better.

Vandy?

I think we will be just fine playing in front of their 35,000 fans, especially if we go in 2-0. They cant run away from us because they can't score. It's a very winnable game

Kentucky?

10th on defense in scoring last year, and will be worse this year. We can win that game

No way Spurrier goes 2-6 in the East this year. Florida is the only team worth a ****, and Vandy and Kentucky should be pretty bad.

I honestly think the ONLY team that can $!*# with Florida in the East will be USC, but that's only because I know that Spurrier will have the boys ready to go for that game. They will be severely overmatched, but they'll be playing for something.

Other than that, good job. I also drove by Hilcrest today; I will say that your Fire Station story is still unlikely, but it's probably a bit closer to 470 feet away than the original 550+ I estimated. I still never saw Seth Smith, Justin Reed, or Logan Power come close to it, but I'm sure it's been done.

and I don't know if anyone else will agree, but does anyone think that Meyer tweeking the offense this year might bit Florida?

They have so much talent that Meyer could do a lot of things and still win games. However, they've said this off-season that they are going to put Tebow in more pro-style situations this year. I believe that Meyer is concerned about the fact that Tebow may not be a Top 10 draft pick next year, and he knows that it'll be a strike against him if he has what people are calling possibly the best college player in history, and even he can't get drafted as a top pick. It's important to Meyer that Tebow get drafted high in the first round, so that he won't have to work against that in recruiting.

I know that if I was a QB recruit, and I watched Tebow tear it up in Meyer's system only to fall to a late first round, early second round pick, I might second guess playing for Meyer, knowing that there is a chance that even if I play as well as Tebow, I still might not be a top level pick.

Anyway, point being, Florida doesn't need to tweak anything offensively or defensively to win this fall. They just need to stick with what has been working, yet Meyer is making changes in an attempt to improve Tebow's draft stock. I could potentially see that backfiring on them at some point.

(Possible) wins as far as I can see.

Jackson State
Houston
Middle Tenn State
Auburn
Arkansas
Vandy
Kentucky

With a little luck we could end up in a bowl game. I don't think Auburn, Arkansas, Vandy or Kentucky will be any better then they were last year and we were 2 and 2 in those four games and should have beaten Kentucky. With just a little bit more offense we would have been 4 and 0 in those four games. Maybe our new coach will get us that extra offense. The only good thing about us only going 2 and 2 in those four games was the fact Croom is gone.

Houston is the unknown. We have not done very well against Houston the last few times we have played them. If they are average we have a good chance of winning six games.

and knock off one of the big five at home: LSU, Georgia Tech, Florida, Alabama, Ole Miss.

I think we beat the **** out of Jackson State and its a statement game.
1-1 against Auburn/Vanderbilt (if we win both of these, it could gear us up for eight)
I think LSU is closer than normal, but its over mid-way through the fourth quarter (31-21 type game)
Georgia Tech is my darkhorse for the national championship - I think this will be our worst defeat (41-17 type)
Houston is a shootout but we win
Middle Tennessee is a solid win (35-14 or so)
Florida is a heartbreaker
1-1 at Kentucky/Arkansas
Alabama is another heartbreaker
Ole Miss is the sixth win and LSU goes to Atlanta in a three way tie 6-2 scenario with Bama and Ole Miss.

SEC West
1. LSU 6-2 (losses to Florida and Alabama)
2. Alabama 6-2 (losses to Ole Miss and someone from the West that they shouldn't- maybe Arkansas)
3. Ole Miss 6-2 (losses to LSU and State)
4. MSU 3-5 (Auburn, Ole Miss, Arkansas)
5. Arkansas 3-5 (Alabama, Auburn, South Carolina)
6. Auburn 1-7 ( I think Auburn beats UK at home)

However if I am not mistaken the last time we played Auburn, Kentucky on the road we won and those teams were better then they will be next year. As far as Arkansas goes, we are due sooner or later maybe it will be this year. I really don't know if it matters where you play Vandy that game is always 50/50.

I might be a sheep but those seven games are winable. I would like to play them all at home but that will not happen this year.

I remember in Jackie's first game ever when we beat Fullerton St. 47-3 thinking, "Holy ****. We used to win these types of games 24-14." It's not quite the same with I-AA, but I do think a really big beatdown would be a good sign for the future. If for nothing else, that we can actually score more than 40 points which Crxxm never did in 5 games against I-AA teams (or anybody else either).

Even Crxxm averaged 34 points per game against I-AA teams after the Maine debacle. If we can't put 40+ on Jackson St., I'll be a little concerned. Actually, I won't be satisfied unless we put 50+ on them.

Just a couple of thoughts on Auburn....

I am not sure we will "outcoach them" just because Croom and Woody are gone. Chizik, lest we forget, was a Broyles Award winner just five years ago, and has a national championship ring as a coordinator like Mullen does. He has put some pretty salty defense on the field in his years. In my mind, his move to Iowa State is pretty comparable to Mullen's move to MState. I just hope Mullen's move is more successful than Chizik's was.

As far as offense goes, Malzahn has proven he knows a thing or two about offense at UPig and Tulsa. The UPig years showed that his system can work in the SEC. While Auburn certainly does not have anyone the caliber of McFadden and Jones, they have above average backs in Ben Tate, Mario Fannin, and Eric Smith.
