about something I've thought about before. Do most colleges drug test athletes? I'm pretty certain A LOT of
college athletes smoke pot, but drug related suspensions are not really
that common considering how many college kids use drugs. If I ran a
program, I know I wouldn't test unless someone's behavior became really
suspect. It just seems that a kid occasionally smoking pot isn't really
that big of a worry to most coaches unless it is affecting his
performance on the field or in the classroom. I doubt this information
is readily available because these things are dealt with in-house
usually.

If you ran a program, would you regularly test, randomly test, or test suspected players? Also, are most major college programs doing legit testing? By legit testing, I mean are programs really disciplining even star players because of a failed pot test.

But I think most programs strongly hint to their athletes what dates they need to be sure they're clean. No inside knowlege at all, just a suspicion of mine. And it wouldn't surprise me at all if any or all of those 3 players were too dumb to be clean on the date they were told they needed to be clean on.

Is there an NCAA or conference rule about it? I've never read anything about it.

Are they legit tests? In a serious piss test (like one for a parolee or for the military), those variables are eliminated mostly.

I can't see the NCAA simply allowing the schools to regulate all testing themselves without reading the findings in print seeing that doping would be an obvious competitive advantage. So that's got me thinking and forgive my inexperience on both PED's and other drug tests, but I'd assume that weed or other street drugs would show up on that result as well. With no uniform policy on punishment,it's got to be a gray area as to what the school decides to do if weed comes back positive. Now as another poster pointed out, it could just as easily be fixed by another person's sample but again, I'd be curious to know what happens if a PED is found and if the punishment is carried down from the school or by the NCAA themselves. I know that wasn't exactly your question, just the idea got me thinking out loud as to how alot of these tests are carried out, not just street drugs.</p>

I posted this in the other thrad, I used to play sports here for a short period.... the NCAA drug tests like once a semester maybe twice, the rest of the time the
school drug tests you. now, you are SUPPOSED to let the NCAA know about
any infractions. all drugs except marijuana warrant a first fail
suspension. 1st failed marijuana test is a warning, notification to
your guardian, and drug counseling. not sure if you get a clean slate
each semester or year or what or not at all. after the first failed
marijuana test it begins at step 1 of the repercussions for the other
drugs - so basically you get 4 fails with marijuana and 3 with other
drugs.

if the NCAA actually wants to test them. I assume they only give test to D1 players though. I haven't ever heard of the NCAA making a Division 2 or 3 player do anything besides signing the form saying you will allow them to test you.
