MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University football coach Neal Brown has announced that the Mountaineer defensive coaching staff will share responsibilities by committee for the 2020 season.

Jordan Lesley will oversee the front of the defense, and Jahmile Addae will handle the back. Jeff Casteel will coach the outside linebackers, and Dontae Wright will now coach the safeties. Jeff Koonz will coach the inside linebackers and oversee the special teams unit.

"Given the timing and unique circumstances surrounding the pandemic, we are going to divide responsibilities and use a committee approach," Brown said. "We are promoting Jeff Casteel to an on-the-field position and know he will be a great contributor. We have an outstanding group of defensive coaches, and I have the utmost confidence in their ability."

Casteel returned to West Virginia on March 27, 2020, as a defensive analyst. He brings 33 years of defensive coaching experience, including 10 years at WVU where he helped the Mountaineers win three BCS bowl games. He has helped guide teams to 14 conference championships and 15 bowl appearances and has coached numerous All-Americans and professional players.

Lesley is still there

Koenning is a good DC but WVU could do a lot better.
Definitely not one of the best in the country.

His success was based on the DL.
Actually WVU could improve in the secondary.

We have a top quality DC in Casteel but Brown will use him to take the lead this year and show Addae and Lesley the ropes.

It will be a similar role like Tom Bradley had during his year at WVU. He was basically the DC behind the scenes.

We will see

LB play and DB play will be the difference.

Give the DL enough time to create pressure.

Need the ability to bracket certain players and play man on others.
Need LBs who can fill gaps.

Addae is someone who could have a big future at WV.
Plus Lesley is someone WVU needs to keep around.

This could be a blessing in disguise.
Gives the coaches the chance to audition for more of a role.

Big thanks to Kerry Martin for screwing over his teammates, the coaching staff, the fans, and himself. He'll be a worse distraction this year than Vic would have been. Dude needs to hit the road.

There is a DC it's just smoke and mirrors of who it is. The experience guy is the leader no doubt.

Man thank god we had to revamp our defense after an aspiring YouTube rapper got upset over words. Where would we be today....

More important? Seriously? Is that what you think?

It is like some of you have no idea how football teams operate

Both coaches are more important to WV than Koenning.
Mainly because they are still there

Koenning wasn't a great recruited nor was he putting players in the NFL

Not a huge blow. .

So, an experienced DC that has installed a new (and better) D last year is less valuable than position coaches that have comparatively little experience.

D was better because of the DL.

Lesley is the best position coach on staff.

Gives Lesley more control and maybe helps with keeping him on staff.

The rest of the D. Wasn't much better
Didn't see the improvement with the Safety play
If the Safties were the key to the D you would be correct

So, you think the D scheme that Vic implemented had nothing to do with the success of the DL this year?

No

Because I researched other teams he has coached.

Koenning was let go before at the P5 level.
Lesley allowed him to catch another ride

Possibly Lesley helped Neal Brown as well.

It was the DL that won the LSU game

Most coaches are let go at the P5 level when a new HC is hired.
Lesley "allowed" him to catch another ride. WTF does that mean?

Research Koenning at UNC
Chizik inherited a trash Defense. Chizik cleaned up a few things very quickly in 2015

Chizik is a good DC. NC caliber DC.
Koenning is solid coach but nothing special.

Lesley as a DL coach looks like a NC caliber DL coach.
Possibly could be more

Nothing personal against Koenning but isn't going to be a huge impact

Definitely isn't hurting recruiting. Looks like recruiting might be even better without him
