I’d say both are important; and the less 5-star/4-star players a team has, the more important good coaches become. Indiana is a good example by beating Ohio State.

Coaching is absolutely more important. Look at A&M under Jimbo. Even with a roster dripping with talented players, they underperformed. There are plenty of examples of talented teams that didn't live up to expectations b/c of coaching. Yeah, generally, your better teams have better players but better coaches make players better. As talented as Saban's Bama teams were, you put almost any other coach in America on those teams and the results would have been wildly different.

Here is your answer...they go hand in hand....BUT don't forget about scheme. Pretty much everyone has taken Sabans' stuff and added some zone blitz concepts in and defense does what they do.

Guess what IU does more than anyone in the country? RPOs
Guess who semi-invented them and introduced them to the mainstream as they are currently widely run and understood now? K. Briles papa with him right in tow.
So scheme is hugely important and we are chasing a scheme guy right now. I hope we land him. He will be one that we don't want to let go if he does come to USC.

Please dont try to sell a coach on his father's accomplishments. :)

Seriously, I had not tied Papa Briles to the RPO development, so I looked it up. Most of what I saw credited the rule change allowing OL downfield and specifically to Urban Meyer and Chip Kelly.

Coaching matters. Our 2 best Head Football Coaches have been Spurrier and Morrison, imho. Neither were considered great recruiters. But they were good enough, so that their coaching could give us some of our most successful seasons.

Look at Scott, Bell and Muschamp. They all were considered strong recruiters. But their lack of coaching skills led to them being short-timers as Head Coaches.

As a former coach I can tell you if you don’t have talent you’re in a world of hurt. That being said there’s more to evaluating talent than how many stars a guy has.An absolute strength that coaches like Gary Patterson,Bear Bryant,Curt Cignetti is their ability to see talent in players that others might not see.Once they identify that talent and how it fits their system then development becomes paramount.
The knock on Texas was that they recruited Texas kids in the 10th grade that were head and shoulders above their peers but these players were at the top of their development .Mesnwhile TCU looked for late bloomers who maybe hadn’t hit final growth spurt yet.

Agree with those who say both matters. Bad coaches can’t recruit in the long run because who’s going to play for them? A coach needs some time to build but if he doesn’t, he’s fired. It’s a delicate dance. How patient do you need to be? How long do you give it? Got to get the right coaches and players for the system. Beamer is still recruiting well and is bringing in new coaches. How long do we wait to see the results? Good question, no easy answer. One more year with decent results? What are decent results? I can’t say until I see next years product on the field.
