You’re tired of using the portal to field a better team? That’s quite the take.
Obviously yes the portal can be valuable and I am not saying to abandon it altogether. Just be much more selective. We have options at some of the weights being named that will likely be just as good as the mid-tier options available.

I mean if a stud 133 or 149 goes in the portal then yeah go after him, but I don’t think it makes sense to spend money on guys who may not even AA when we have similar talent there already.

The post I responded to named 125 and 197 too. Those seem especially unnecessary unless we have departures. Just my opinion.

well...its not like the hawks are flush with talent in the upper weights...Luddington at 197...he looks scrappy, but a long way from other middle of the road 197lbers and our current heavy is 10-7 with today's 2-0 win....I'm less concerned about upper weight coaches and agree with Slim45...I would hope Buchanan would still be around to provide a practice partner

That’s weird, because I thought you said this. Maybe the board had a glitch or something.

I am tired of relying on the portal. Honestly I would prefer they only go after a 165 and let the chips fall where they may. Roll with Peterson at 133.

Anyway, Iowa improved significantly at multiple weights via the portal this year. Not sure where you get the idea that they didn’t. But ok, I guess.

What are you talking about?

I clearly said use the portal for 165. That aligns with being more selective. My point on 133 and 149 is I am skeptical that there will be tier 1 types available who can score legitimate points at NCAAs. Those are brutal weights and it seems unlikely those guys enter. Maybe they do. In which case go after them.

Not sure why you think my posts don’t align.

And this years 4 portal guys already lost 2. Hope the other two can score big points but we’ll see.

No idea. I just think it’s funny you are tired of the portal when so many examples of Iowa landing clear upgrades over alternatives are staring you in the face.

I don’t wanna speak for him, but Im guessing he was saying he’s tired of relying so heavily on the portal. Which has been talked about a lot on here because of lack of recruiting. But ya, without the portal, next year things look pretty bleak

I actually think I figured him out. He’s saying only use the portal to upgrade. Dude is all over strategy.

I know there has been success. I am not discounting it. This past year felt very forced. We spent money on 4 guys who had a combined 1 D1 AA coming into the year.

We needed a 125 and 197 for sure so I would have rather been selective and spent more money on those two weights to get someone good rather than spread it out. Maybe they tried and it wasn’t possible. Or maybe Nassir and Dean prove to be worth all the money.

Anyways, good chat. Next round is about to start so let’s go hawks.

But we upgraded considerably at 125, 141, and 197. No one was close to those 3 guys on the existing roster. 157 was even an upgrade on paper. If you don’t like that idea, I don’t know what to tell you.

I’d also like to have gotten a couple of other guys but we couldn’t land them for whatever reason.

Terry just told Gabe, "Only shoot if it is indefensible."

This was when he was not ahead.

How's NCAAs going guys ?
You posted this in two different topics like it’s some “told ya” moment. The fact they wrestled well doesn’t change any of the problems that’s been eluding this program. I’m glad to see them wrestling decent but don’t act like a douche bag; this board already has a resident douche bag we don’t need you too.

I read this board and most here gave up on many of these guys and yet here they're. Sometimes reading all the BS gets old

I don't really think advancing to the quarter final round at the NCAA tournament is the Iowa standard. Going 2-5 or 3-4 in the quarter final will put them down in that 5th to 6th place range. Iowa needs to at least go 4-3 here and 5-2 is well within range. The good news is they are well in the trophy hunt, but the morning session will go a long way to determining if things will get real.

Even if they wrestled better during the regular season, they would still have needed a majority of their guys to get it done on the backside. As good as Ayala is 133 added some transcendent talent. He was always going to have to beat a monster in the quarters to stay up top. Hopefully he somehow pulls it off. If he doesn’t, he can still score quite a bit on the backside.

After that, Kennedy getting the 4/5 instead of the 2/3 definitely sucks. He can get past Karchla, but the rest of his points would again be down low. Angelo’s health gives me no idea what to expect. He likely has to win 3 coinflip matches in a row to win it all. It sure would be one hell of a story, but I would fully expect him to mop up on the backside till he hits one of those 3 again.

I obviously fully expect Caliendo to get to the Finals. No disrespect to Blaze, but Caliendo has shown he has yet another gear specifically for this tournament. From there, the rest are grinders. Bailey and Kueter have already got it done on the backside and Peterson should have crazy desire to finally get it done. Finally, anything they get from Block and Arnold from here is simply a bonus.

With that said, I never thought the quarterfinals were the make it or break it point. A great round certainly would bolster them beyond nearly everyone’s expectations. But, I always thought the backside is going to be where the rubber hits the road…

wait. you guys think the best candidates will be reluctant b/c of Iowa's 'lack of resources'?

lmfao.

you guys still don't get it. i'm not tryin' to be a pr!ck. and i love it here and your passion. but you refuse to accept reality and correctly identify/blame the actual source that causes your frustration.
Willie honest question for you. Since we know T&T are both returning do you believe a change of assistants will help? Telford almost certainly is done & maybe Morningstar too. I feel like some fresh outside faces in that room could improve our guys

Think it was Ironside last night during the broadcast that made the comment, our seeds will catch up to us this morning. And with some of the upsets that happened yesterday, the backside paths will be tougher than what one would normally expect.

Yesterday was a good day. they wrestled well, left a couple points on the table here and there, but overall really good day. here's to keeping it rolling, and taking the opportunities others aren't.

None of the hawk fans on here are giving up or rooting against our wrestlers. Myself and every other fan wants what’s best for our guys. The coaches however are a different story; yes I believe the majority have given up on them. So yes, the ones of us bitching that our coaches are stale are here to say we’re glad the wrestlers are doing well right now. Is that ok or would you rather we stay away unless we’re here just to ***** about coaching?

We like our guys. The portal better bail us out at 133, 149, 157 , 165 and maybe 197. 125 also scares me with how much Deluca has been hurt the last 2 years. We have no AA's at any of those weights on the roster.
I think Harvey is going to be fine. I would like to see a full sized 157 Block and Estrada at 149. That would leave 133 (we have Peterson who is NCAA qualifier level) and 165 where we don't really have anyone.

Exactly. He never lets facts get in the way of a good story though. It sounds a lot better in his mind to say we gave up on the individual wrestlers.

Its not yianni replacing telford from what ive heard but i have heard rumblings of him coming in if Morningstar leaves
Why not just make Morningstar a recruiting coordinator since he gets praised about how good of a recruiter he is. Plus, he can probably still practice in the room with the guys.

He can do what Mark Hall is doing at OU.

Also, with most people on here saying that Telford is going to be gone next year, how don’t we know who is going to replace him if we have the insider information that he is leaving?

Is it because the search process hasn’t started or we are keeping this close to the chest? Or, this is just a rumor?

Unless the RC is one of the 3 allowed assistants, they cannot recruit off campus. I also do not think they can participate in practice but might be wrong on that. Not saying he can or he can’t, but that’s a fairly significant shift in job responsibilities.

It’s just a rumor at this point. And you expect way too much from a rumor mill. (Though when @WEH8ST8HAWK speaks with such certainty, I generally pay attention.)

Oh and I guess the rumor of Telford out and Yianni in is exactly what you’re asking for.
