Cohen's contract extension and raise have similarities to...

what we did with Croom. Was it too early to reward Cohen so dramatically considering this past season is his first successful one, and he has charges pending against about the practice violations? The admin obviously believes nothing will come from the so called violations. Just raising the question to see how others feel. As for me, I would have waited one more year to see what happens....and if more progress is shown, then reward him substantially.

I like the fire he has for the program and his intensity. His style of baseball is fun in that he plays agressively and not station to station. I just hope next season can show progress because a ton of seniors left this year's team. It will be an interesting year.

There are many differences between Croom and Cohen.

Making a Super Regional in year three- and I won't give him a pass for year one, although I certainly could considering that Croom had one recruiting class to get some of his own players- is better than making the Liberty Bowl in year four. Reason I say that- going to a SR gets you ranked in the top 20 easily. Going to the Liberty Bowl means you finished unranked.

Also, Cohen isn't going to sit on his *** and act like we "owe him" something just because we made a SR.

And then there's the fact that Cohen has brought in two top 25 recruiting classes- we'll see where last year's class is ranked in Aug., but there is a 5th and a 12th round pick in it as well as a pitcher who won Alabama pitcher of the year as a junior. Already, we have one of Alabama's top catcher's verbally committed as well as one of the top hitters in Mississippi, and then we have the top rising junior in Mississippi verbally committed towards next years class. Croom only had one good class- and that was his last one, and Dan had to close that one out for Croom, or we would not have gotten Bumphis, Perkins, and maybe even a couple of others such as Fletcher Cox.

Our players are making tangible improvements in baseball. When Croom was here, he claimed I needed new glasses.

Finally, if Cohen starts to lose, our AD will fire him. When Croom was here and LT was here, eh, not so much. And then the ninja executed him. Stricklin is not going to give him a ridicuous buyout in his contract like we did for Croom.

Reason I say that is a typical baseball season is 63 games and post season can easily go 8 games to get through a super regional. 38-23 is not a terrible record for baseball. Think back to basic statistics. To better understand a "population," or in this case, the legitimacy of a particular team, the more games you need to play. To win 38 games, making it to day 3 and leading in the 7th against the national runner-up, and playing in the toughest conference in America is an accomplishment. <div>
</div><div>Football, although yes, it is tougher to win each individual game (you don't have as much room to mess up), the margin of victory that season was very slim (Auburn by 5 points, Bama by 5 points, OM by 3 points, UCF 7 points... ). Those 3 games alone in the regular season, had it not been for our defense making one key play, those outcomes could have been completely different. Plus... like Todd said, a Super Regional is much more of an accomplishment... as opposed to making the Liberty Bowl. </div><div>
</div><div>Don't get me wrong... I am not trying to degrade either season or make it into something bigger, but the situations and the sports are a very different. You could be right that we could blow next season, but to have the kind of season we did in the SEC... where 3 of the final 4 were SEC teams, that is something to be proud of. Croom, on the other hand, beat "mediocre teams" with a mediocre team (still near the bottom of Division 1 in offensive production... just had some plays go our way in key situations on defense and special teams... namely a pick 6 at auburn, a pick 6 against Bama, and a punt return for a touchdown and key 4th and 1 stop against OM). To me, Cohen's situation seems a lot more legitimate than Croom's. </div>

Croom didn't show he could win... anywhere. Cohen dug Kentucky's baseball team out of the pit of the cellar and now is scrubbing the Polk off the rest of the baseball team to win.. <div>
</div><div>Croom got an extension after horrible years and then a Liberty bowl win. Cohen took a team, not very talented, that was supposed to finish last in the SEC west and took MSU 9 outs from Omaha.</div><div>
</div><div>Croom made excuses... Cohen has produced results.</div><div>
</div><div>LT gave Croom his raise... Stricklin gave Cohen his.</div><div>
</div><div>End of all comparison.</div>

but I think that Stricklin is making it abundantly clear that the formula for financial success as a coach at MSU is simple.

Winning/postseason success = $$$
Losing/media embarrassment = cold shoulder

Mullen and Cohen were both rewarded for hard work and on field success by being given new contracts that are very competitive with those in what is arguably the most powerful conference in the NCAA. Stansbury, on the other hand, did not get the job done last year so he was not given an extension. On one hand, I do feel that it may have been a little premature to give Cohen another 4 years but at the same time, I like the precedent that Scott is setting. You don't have to jump through hoops or brown nose to be rewarded as a coach here. Just do what you're paid to do.

One last note... I'm pretty sure Byrne extended Croom after the bowl win, not LT as some have implied.

I believe your dates are messed up. LT gave Croom the extension as his final FU to MSU fans. Byrne had to come up with the money to fire his *** due to the extension.

It looks like Byrne was officially named AD about a month after Croom's extension in early 2008. Wow, LT really did go out with a bang.
