Was surprising in how descriptive he was about who he was going to hire - extensive head coaching experience and multiple CWS appearances. Cohen said he wanted a coach hired 24 hrs after that coach's season ended.

He sure sounded like he thinks he has his man. He said even he was surprised at who reached out about the job.

After seeing how Cohen operates, I’d be surprised if he doesn’t have his guy already. Dan McDonald fits that description.....( as does a lot of coaches)

Welp. That seals it. Sounds like Mainieri it is *

Looks like you beat me by a few minutes on this one.

I ripped the audio of the baseball segment and edited it down to as small of clip as I can(19secs for the punch line) but am unsure how to get it onto SPS and how to properly credit to them if I do.

IMO he really whittled it down to just a handful of names -- after saying earlier that we don't have anyone yet -- after saying before that he is shocked by the amount of interest we've gotten from sitting, established, elite head coaches. Makes me feel like he's confident that with the amount of interest from their third parties that one of three or four elite head coaches is going to be the next guy...

I wouldn't say a lot...

Sitting, established head guys that have been to Omaha and will make the fanbase very happy is a pretty small number. Under 10 guys for sure. I'm not sure Cohen would have met his own criteria for the new guy in terms of CWS experience or making the fanbase very happy(at the time) although the non-Polk guys were ecstatic.

Based on the description that Cohen/Rogers have been hinting at for a few weeks now, that filters out a lot of names- it’s a pretty short list actually. Established head coach, been to Ohama (probably more than once), bigger name than Butch/Mingione, etc.

McDonnell
Schlossnagle
Tadlock
O’Connor
Corbin
Maybe Johnson at Arizona
O’Sullivan (not happening for obvious reasons)
Manieri (not happening for obvious reasons)

That’s about it, unless I’m missing someone. I think he might already have basically a handshake deal set up with one of those, and if I was putting money down, I’d say one of the first three on that list.

"Multiple CWS appearances" even takes bastard himself out of the equation. Unless one counts appearances as a player.

"Multiple CWS appearance"

That doesn't leave many names on the list, when it's safe to assume Corbin, Maineri, and O'Sullivan aren't candidates.

I wouldn't be so quick to assume Corbin is not a candidate. I think it's pretty safe to exclude Manieri and O'Sullivan though.

I re-listened to that section a few times... It wasn't established that those multiple CWS appearances had to be as a head coach, although the context of surrounding statements certainly would lead to that inference...

Basically, in the overall interview he laid his D out on the table and said we are going to make a kind of hire that hasn't really been made in college baseball in 20 years -- maybe since Augie left Fullerton for Texas. You could argue DVH to Arky maybe since he had back to back CWS @ Nebraska when Arky sniped him but he wasn't nearly as established overall as the guys we are talking about here. He'd be more along the lines of Jay Johnson IMO. And he was an Arky alum which is an advantage that we will not have in making this hire.

I was already hoping he would eventually be the hire but now that I know we already spell his name wrong it makes it even better**

More than one State fan has brought up Jay Johnson's name as being a great hire but then down Butch in the same post.I don't get what the love for Johnson is.He got hot in 2016 at the right time, but was still only two games above .500 in the Pac 12.His record wasn't all that great last year and still he was only two games above .500 in the Pac 12.Right now he is 17-10 with a losing record in the Pac 12.None of his recruting classes have been ranked very high either.

I don't think Jay Johnson would be a great hire either. He just eliminated arguably the best wire to wire State team of the last 20 years on the road and that's why State fans remember and talk about him. He's one good postseason run better than Butch and Ming, and they will both have the chance to match that this year.

We are shooting higher than that. Rest assured.

For the record, if we miss on the big names, I’d prefer Butch over Jay Johnson too...

You’d have to think that Cohen already has a handshake agreement with someone to be making a statement this bold and specific. Feels like the deal is all but done.

I suspect whoever it is, they like the fact that the IB is a former big-time baseball HC and that John is at his alma-mater, in a place that has proven we are loyal, etc. So JC is more likely to be around for a very, very long time.

A quality HC would have to like knowing there is going to be long-term stability and support for the baseball program through the AD.

Yea, I think Cohen is too smart to be this specific if he can't back it up. It's just a question now of how many of those traits have been checked off as a head coach versus as an assistant.

Yea, I guess if you want to dice words I believe he said they would have extensive HC experience and have multiple trips to Omaha. He didn't specifically say he would have multiple trips to Omaha AS a HC. So technically it could be a HC now that has been to Omaha multiple times as an assistant or something.

But wouldn’t “extensive hc experience” without multiple trips to Omaha in that role disqualify the last statement of “someone our fan base can be very excited about”? The cumulative total of his statement narrows it down to 10 guys at most...

I agree that the insinuation is certainly that he has made trips to Omaha as a HC.

Think about this....he said he wanted a coach hired within 24 hours of that coaches season ending.

When we go into regionals on June 1, there will be 64 teams still playing. I’m assuming our next coach will have his team in a regional. On June 4 there will be 16 teams still playing, so I guess we can say if there is no press conference set by the end of June 5 our baseball coach will come from one of the 16 teams still alive. Likewise, the next week after super regionals we will know if our next coach is coming from a World Series team or one that lost in the supers.

That should be a fun time watching each teams season end and waiting to see if the IB makes a move.

People thinking about “did the coach do that as an assistant or a head coach” are looking waayyy too deep into this. Cohen has a pretty good idea about who he’s going to hire, IMO. He has enough connections in college baseball coaching to not get played for a fool in the agent game. I’d be surprised (and disappointed) if our guy didn’t come from the list I gave above, and it will happen very shortly following the end of his respective season.

Good list but there is a name that isn't on it that I have a funny feeling about and I wouldn't be mad if it comes true. (hint: there are some connections with a prominent member of our current staff).

The IB made a deal with Loafers back in November to trade Mullett to Florida for a future coach to be named later. I think we had to throw in a defense coordinator to make the deal work though.

I rarely get into these coach guessing discussions because I have no clue, but I've got a feeling it's McDonnell. He's probably tired of the cesspool of an athletic dept UL has become and stepping into a HC job at a Top 20 (notice no use of elite) program in the SEC with a brand new top notch stadium and baseball guy as his likely long term boss has got to be pretty damn attractive.
