"I listened to Jim Ellis and it is a good thing we have the best radio guy in the country because at least you get to listen to something of quality associated with Mississippi State baseball on the radio because there is nothing of quality happening on the field there for a while," stated Cohen following the disappointing effort by the bullpen.

"The whole story of this thing as everybody knows is we are trying to dodge our bullpen. The bullpen has so many walks in it and it had walks in it last year," said an obviously frustrated head coach. "It is personnel that just walks people and there is just not much we can do about that. In the future we will have pitchers who have a background of throwing strikes. These guys do not and it is just that simple. There is no other way to say it than we are just not good in that area and we are going to have to find personnel that is good at it."

I was at Dudy Noble today, and I truly believe that our bullpen is the worst bullpen in major college baseball, hands down.

I believe John Cohen could post here. Who knows? He might lurk or something.

But he is dead on, not that it isn't obvious. We're sending midgets that throw 84 while other teams are sending guys that are 6'3" and can throw in the 90's.

If it was Polk doing the interview, I'm sure it would be, well, they're good kids, and Auburn is a nice program, and that's baseball.

the thing is- thats what he said in public- can you imagine what he said to them off air?

I feel his pain. Nothing you can do when your pitchers dont throw strikes. Nothing.

And yeah, it has to be an absolutely helpless feeling to look down there and see nothing. And then what do you do midweek? We have two games this week, and really no one to throw that can match up with people like UAB. Pitiful.

This might come as harsh, but I would cut Bussey, Wesson, Hollingshead, maybe even Houston. They would have trouble playing for Mike Kinnison at Delta State. I've seen Reed pitch twice this year and he's looked completely in over his head. Wesson is like a 2-wheel Jugs machine set on 75mph and throwing a 4 seam. It's unreal that our former coaching staff looked at these guys and said, "****, let's offer these guys a scholarship." It is absolutely and completely unacceptable to have them on the team.

and tell him to get better or he is going to get his brains beat out. He would go at least 5 innings no matter what happened. He has to eat up some innings

the crappiness that Polk left. Those of you morons that are griping about Cohen already, your are idiots. We have zero SEC talent. We barely have SWAC talent right now. Cohen's got to get this year and next to even start resembling an SEC program before we start blaming him about how terrible we are. I dare say that Croom left more for Mullen to work with than Polk left Cohen.

I think some folks in Lexington are wondering how much Cohen left at his former program. Guess we'll find out in a couple of weeks who left things in worse shape. Feel free to come back with the standard UK doesn't care about baseball response.

then I would get a good look at Pace again. I think at times Houston can give us 1 maybe two innings then come back with Crosswhite. Oh wait, we got Usm wednesday night, I bet Cohen doesn't sleep good at night trying figure this "non-rotation together.

that guy's acting like a dick, no two ways about it. i've never heard a coach consistently throw his players under the bus. i don't know what's going to happen long term but i'm betting whatever production he was getting out of the bullpen goes straight in the *******.

That's exactly where the bullpen is now. What else are they going to do? Keep walking people and serving up home runs?

This team hits like a SEC team is supposed to. Hell, they scored almost 30 runs against Auburn this weekend.

I know you like stats, so here are the stats for SEC play so far. You'll notice MSU is top tier in almost every hitting category...

http://www.secsports.com/new/sports/bbc/09stats/lgconf.htm

Cohen realizes he has hitters than can drive in runs, but no pitchers that can hold leads & get his offense back in the dugout.

If you slam Polk for leaving behind a bunch of scrubs who can't hit, then that's not a fair assessment.

But if you slam Polk for leaving behind a bullpen that even Millsaps would reject, then that's a fair assessment.

I never liked Polk & I'm not taking up for him by posting this. And I have dogged Cohen some this season, though I have also said Polk would not have this many wins so far with the same talent level (that's one that requires re-thinking after this weekend).

My main point this board never admits the hitting is there for this team. It is (don't take my word for it: Look at the stats).

nail those kids in the ***. they know they suck, and it's not like cohen beating them up is going to make them better. they suck, and won't get better, but they've chosen to come to MSU and he should give them some measure of respect. smacks of narcissism frankly.

Some people can play for this guy and want to play for a coach like this and some dont. I have friends that played for Kinnison at Delta State and they told me that some guys can play for a guy like that and some can't. I also have friends that played for Bianco at UM and they said that he was the same way that Cohen is now. The difference right now is Cohen is such a culture shock to our program. We have some fans that still think Polk should be the coach and we have the talent right now to host a regional and that Ole Miss hasn't passed us by. I like Cohen saying these things and getting the fact out into the media/public that the cupboard was left bare. I like to see the old bastards at the game today scratch their head at the shock of how horrific Polk's recruiting has been the last 10 years or so. Cohen isn't just calling out the players, he's calling out the fans to let them know what kind of a situation we are in.

Edited to add: Bianco didn't walk into a program with absolutely no bullpen and a lack of depth EVERYWHERE on the field. Ole Miss was down, but respectable. Bianco didn't have to make any comments like Cohen is and no one really knows if Mike would say those things or not.

I'm talking about the pitching. Honestly, despite what I typed in the heat of the moment, I don't know that we're really in worse shape than we are in football. We're talking about getting1-2 pitchers from being back to respecatable SEC team.

I looked at the stats last night. Our hitting is 10 points better as a team than it was last year (at the end of the year) Now, that may be somewhat apples and oranges, and I want to see where we finish.

Our team defense seems to be better overall to me, even though we do have lapses from time to time.

And actually, at least as of yesterday, our pitching one one run better.

We're scoring enough runs to win. We have decent enough starting pitching on the weekend to win, but our bullpen is absolutely pitiful.

...The baseball team just needs pitchers. Yes, the fielding is suspect, and the catcher position is mediocre (especially after having Easley), but if Cohen had 3 decent middle relief pitchers, this baseball team would be in the hunt.

On the other hand, the football team has more holes than a New Orleans levee after Katrina.

I just don't understand all the excitement about the football team this fall. Barring some all-world contributions from some true freshmen, they are going to be pretty bad.

...Cohen is not throwing anybody under the bus.

He's telling the truth.

Not many college head coaches in any sport tell the truth any more.

The fact he is brutally honest speaks to his character, and his desire to recruit him some quality pitchers who don't tank a weekend series most other teams would have swept.

that any State fan, including myself, will believe Cohen will do no wrong in year 1.

I somewhat agree that he is walking a fine line making public statements such as the one above but I enjoy the honesty.

Say it all you want in the lockerroom, but you don't say that in public.

Do you think the fielders/hitters like hearing their friends/teammates talked so poorly about in the public?

Point is, you don't say that in public. You don't talk **** about your team in public. You handle that in private, period.
