I’ve been making this point for years. Mostly to deaf ears, I think.Yes, we agree that it's the thing that lots and lots of fan bases do. Here, we've got a guy who in his career has thrown for 20 something yards and run for maybe 1, and fans on message boards believe that the coach should play him instead. Wash, rinse, repeat.
Now, if Schiano and Gleeson, after seeing the kid in practice and/or the position room, decide to start Evan Snyder Simon Cole, OK. They have a better basis to make that decision than the internet. And I know that coaches get things wrong, but it's hard not to chuckle when fans think 5 passes in a blowout make them right. Schiano and Gleeson have consistently moved other players up the depth chart based principally on practice performance, most recently on the OLine. So I'll credit that rather than the incessant internet hum of fans calling for the latest backup QB.
Some fans continue to operate under the belief that, somehow, the coaching staff cannot see everything the fans see in the games plus a shitload of stuff fans will never see or hear about. Decisions as to what QB to play are based on a ton of information, 99% of which the fans have zero access to.
Our coaching staff is very experienced, very intelligent, and very motivated to win games. If a change in personnel is warranted, they'll make that change at the appropriate time. And if they do, it will be a fully informed decision - something fans, lacking the critical information, aren't capable of doing.
Coaches make mistakes all the time. But 99.9% of fans put in the position to actually coach, as opposed to sitting on the couch and judging everything with the benefit of hindsight, would make 1000 times more mistakes than even the worst D1 coaches out there. And fans start calling for the backup the moment they see a bad pass in a game.
These threads get so ridiculous - as if fans clamoring to see the backup will ever have even the slightest impact on anything.
