Yes, we agree that it's the thing that lots and lots of fan bases do. Here, we've got a guy who in his career has thrown for 20 something yards and run for maybe 1, and fans on message boards believe that the coach should play him instead. Wash, rinse, repeat.

Now, if Schiano and Gleeson, after seeing the kid in practice and/or the position room, decide to start Evan Snyder Simon Cole, OK. They have a better basis to make that decision than the internet. And I know that coaches get things wrong, but it's hard not to chuckle when fans think 5 passes in a blowout make them right. Schiano and Gleeson have consistently moved other players up the depth chart based principally on practice performance, most recently on the OLine. So I'll credit that rather than the incessant internet hum of fans calling for the latest backup QB.
I’ve been making this point for years. Mostly to deaf ears, I think.

Some fans continue to operate under the belief that, somehow, the coaching staff cannot see everything the fans see in the games plus a shitload of stuff fans will never see or hear about. Decisions as to what QB to play are based on a ton of information, 99% of which the fans have zero access to.

Our coaching staff is very experienced, very intelligent, and very motivated to win games. If a change in personnel is warranted, they'll make that change at the appropriate time. And if they do, it will be a fully informed decision - something fans, lacking the critical information, aren't capable of doing.

Coaches make mistakes all the time. But 99.9% of fans put in the position to actually coach, as opposed to sitting on the couch and judging everything with the benefit of hindsight, would make 1000 times more mistakes than even the worst D1 coaches out there. And fans start calling for the backup the moment they see a bad pass in a game.

These threads get so ridiculous - as if fans clamoring to see the backup will ever have even the slightest impact on anything.

Nine times out of ten, when the back up gets a chance to play against a first team defense, early or when the outcome hasn’t been decided.
We all see why the back up is the back up

It’s a real shame because we can’t run a real offense around here.
Just think how much you’d love to have the Temple QB…yup, the same one we pummeled.
Bingo.
Having a QB that ranks at the bottom or near the bottom of the B1G for 2 years straight { up to #12 this week} limits everything we can do. Cannot compete with a “game manager” who simply limits turnovers. That won’t win us many games in the B1G. Praying we can find a way to 3 wins with our D and Special Teams.

How well did being ranked #6 help Taulia against Iowa? He threw five or six picks and looked dreadful.
And Adrian Martinez is ranked #7. How is that working out for Nebraska?
BTW, on ESPN, Vedral is ranked #9.

It didn't help that he was being hit for two of his three interceptions. That is not to say that Vedral isn't a limited QB, it's to say that we also have limitations in a number of other places on offense. All of that contributes to a weaker passing and running game than we'd like. There simply has not been enough time to turn the roster over and, frankly, the improvements that we have seen are pretty impressive over the course of only 15 games. The offense was a nightmare during Ash's last 2 years.

Hear you but knowing our starting QB is not going to competitive or win us any B1G games ( 3 years has shown this} we need to start giving Cole more opportunities. Staying on this course of total ineptitude at QB is ridiculous.

Just to clarify, Vedral did QB a B1G road win last year. And what information is it that you have that the coaches do not have that tells you that Cole is a better option than Vedral? Because right now the coaches disagree wit you.

To me it's not even about making him the starter. It's "The game is already decided, good or bad, why is he still in there?" It's a perfect opportunity to see some other folks on the roster get some reps and see what they can do in a game situation. It's done at every other position. Why does QB have to stay in until victory formation? Temple would have been a great game to get Snyder some reps. Why did Vedral even start the third quarter of OSU? It was 45-6. Was he gonna throw us back into it at that point?
What happens if Vedral goes down? Wouldn't you want Snyder to have some game experience instead of coming in cold?

I am going to play devil's advocate. There are pluses and minuses to both sides of the argument. For Vedral, you need to give him as many reps as possible because it's early in the year and he needs time to be on the same page as the receivers. This gives the team the best chance for a 7 win season. (At least, that's what the coaching staff thinks.)

Two years into the eight year contract I think Schiano is more interested in developing the read option system here rather than winning games this year. If we win, great. But it’s not his focus. It’s dangerous though because losing doesn’t help recruiting. He knows this obviously but with 6 years left on his deal it’s worth the risk.

It could be the QB of the future s on the roster but needs time in the system and not ready for prime time now because he just arrived as an early HS grad.
Snyder and Simon might have lost needed practice time to the future starter and Noah is thew type of QB that will keep RU in every game , except elite programs like OSU.
Cole can be put in when all hope is lost, but not in games when hope is still there.
What we see during garbage time isn't the same as going for the win.pressure is way different and usually the opponent's D isn't their top players.

Greg is building for a better team in the future and also trying to make RU look as desirable as he can to the HS ( & portal) talent he tries to recruit to accomplish his goal of making RU FB a desired designation to the future recruits he goes after .
The 8 years does provide Schiano a better edge that a few years to go, but like any good recruiter Greg knows he has to make the program worthwhile to come to and he won't give up trying to win
while his system is in the development stage.
He'll put the best on the field trying to show the rectuits he plans to go after that RU FB can be a place that will be a force and they can be part of it ASAP, not have top wait t be a winner after everyone learns his system in a few years. .

Coaches make the most of what talent they have on the roster because they're success driven and that type doesn't plan on waiting till their contract us close to expiring before the winning starts.
Most try to recruit players that fit their system, but in the beginning adjust the system to make the best use of the talent on the roster

Hat … sure, he wants to build his system but probably believes one way to recruit is to sell the system rather than ‘going 1-0 every week.’

When you see ND and other teams that switch QBs, invariably they have same matching skills to fit the school system. Here, the backup are pro-style QBs and Vedral is not. The future is with Wimsatt and read option.

Not a single post in this thread intimated such a scenario. The general theme is why wouldn't a backup QB get more meaningful reps early in the game when the starting QB has clear limitations and is struggling in a game, especially when one has demonstrated ability on multiple occasions.
He looked good against Michigan. Every rep helps whoever is getting them.

Also to whoever said Simon looked lost that’s incorrect. He did fine until the OL had a communication problem and nobody blocked or even looked at a DT. That’s not on the QB. Also noticed that Vedral got hit on the last 2 picks and that’s not on the QB. First one was on him. He was pressured but he rushed and should have eaten that one or thrown it away.

It's also true that football coaches generally give preference to the more experienced QB that they feel gives them the best chance to win the next game, even if it is in the program's best longer term interest to play a younger, less experienced but more talented backup. Exhibit 1 is Justin Fields sitting behind Jake Fromm, Exhibit 2 is Joe Burrow sitting behind first JT Barrett and then Dwayne Haskins. Going back a couple of decades, many can recall Joe Flacco backing up Tyler Palko at Pitt before he transferred to Delaware.

Ummmm. Maryland is 4-1 and their QB has the highest Comp. % and most passing yards in the B1G.
To even suggest our starting QB is on that level is hilarious.

Let’s look at Vedral stats vs. OSU from Saturday against Taulia’s stats this Saturday vs. OSU.

Dude you got all of that out of Bingo?

You keep doing you. If trashing every starting QB for RU makes you feel better then keep on hating. I’m showing up and rooting for my team on Saturday. I’m also laughing my a$$ off at these Groundhog Day threads.

Since the next Joe Montana and Tom Brady are on the bench unnoticed by the oblivious coaches, maybe the next Jonathan Ogden and Anthony Munoz are hiding there too.

I’ll agree with you on that. But you should agree with me on my point, which is that barely has a time existed when there isn’t a thread on this board about the backup quarterback. The biggest rooting cliche of all is ever present here. I’m not saying that Vedral doesn’t have drawbacks. He’s got several, some big. But I’ll defer to the coaches on whether the ever-changing guy (of whom they’ve seen only glimpses) that fans on this board want to take-over the job should actually take-over the job. And I don’t accept “well just try something” as an answer.
Everybody always want the back up QB. 😂😂With that being said if we straighten this ship, you have to at least give the back up an opportunity. I think after the season at least 2 QBs will transfer.

they can also be too close or too biased to see what even a novice can see. This has ample evidence in history

cuts both ways

Never forget, 'I forgot I had him on the bench' lol
wasn't it flood who stuck with nova after his five pick game against ped st.......what determines a coaches thought process.
anyone have a clue?

Those are ellipses, but you wouldn't know that would you? Did you think they were lines of blow? 😏
An ellipsis consists of only 3 periods. Which doesn't apply to his posts.

And etiquette dictates that all the lines of blow should be equal-sized, unless someone is specifically asking for less at some point in the evening. Or so I've been told. So that wouldn't apply either.

Thus we're still left to ponder what they're all about. I'm hoping there's a good story behind it.

Yeah, especially now that you don’t have to sit out a year. Kids come in early take classes year round, get their degree and have 2 sometimes 3 years of eligibility remaining. They want to play can’t blame them for looking elsewhere if they aren’t playing here.

Rutgers has an excellent opportunity to develop some young QBs while Vedral still gets most of the snaps. Either backup could alternate games where one gets a series or two a game. With half of the season remaining, each would receive a quality number of snaps/experiences, leaving Rutgers in a much better place. Rutgers wouldn't be in such a difficult position of relying on one QB if things go south.

Knowing Schiano's past... He will continue to play Vedral all season barring injury. Both Cole Snyder and Evan Simon will transfer and the team will start the 2022 season with Vedral as the starter and Wimsatt as the back up. I've got a feeling Cole Snyder will follow in Flacco's foot step and light it up at a non Power 5 school. Then, there will be many posts about his game statistics.

Syracuse is in dire need of a QB. He's a Western NY guy. Could see him transferring to Syracuse, where he might do well.

Agree. If Cole Snyder is better than Noah Vedral right now then he would be starting for us. Unless you dont trust Greg as HC.

Sometimes our armchair QB’s on this board are not as knowledgeable as our coaching staff imo.
