Colin Cowherd just said he'd take Jeter over Stan Musial. Discuss.

Also, am I reading that correctly that Musial played 4 different positions many years and still turned in a better fielding % than Jeter? I understand that playing shortstop probably creates a higher likelihood of making an error, but still... That's interesting.

On a related note, can someone explain to me the love that Jeter has received throughout his career? The man has had a solid career in baseball, but I can't recall another lifetime .310 avg/15 HR hitter that has been given godlike status anywhere near his level. People seem to always want to mention his name with the all time best, but when you look at the numbers such as with this case, it's not even close. Is it just the effect of being a longtime Yankee or is there something I'm missing?

As far as pure hitters go, you can't make a logical argument that picks Jeter over Musial. Musial has more Hr's, Rbi's, and lifetime batting average; Its really not a contest.

Just like you can't compare Jeter's value as far as base running, and his defensive ability back when he could move.

Each guy is a top 5 player of all time at his position, and Im not sureyou could argue against that.

If you are talking position scarcity, Jeter gives you more bang for you buck due to the lack of elite shortstops.

Also, you have to consider the amount of talent that Jeter has bagged. Its an amazing list of talent: Adriene Lima, Minka Kelly, Jessica Alba, vintage Mariah Carey, Vida Guerra, Jordana Brewster, Jessica Biel, Tyra Banks, Vanessa Minillo, and Lara Dutto (Former Miss Universe);

Considering the amount of love that Cal Ripken received with a .276 lifetime average, Jeter's .310 average is pretty stout.

Also, you have to take into consideration that the guy hit right at .321 in the World Series and to me has had the Jack Morris quality of showing up in big games.

Cowherd's problem- other than the obvious fact that he's an idiot and an attention *****- is that he is trying to compare guys at two totally different positions. Musial was a corner outfield type player- he is/was expected to hit for power and drive in runs. Jeter is a middle infielder who is a leadoff hitter, who I personally think would be a good number two guy as well because he handles the bat really well. Totally different types of players who are asked to do totally different things. Apples and oranges.

To me, his comparision seems pretty random.

The thing about Jeter- if you compare him to other middle infielders that are asked to hit in the same spot in the lineup, he's probably the best all around top of the order hitting middle infielder of all time. Comparing him to similar type players in the HOF- Ozzie Smith, Luis Aparicio, Pee Wee Reese, Joe Morgan and etc. I would consider Cal Ripken, Jr. and Ryne Sandberg to be more middle of the order type hitters, although if I recall, Sandberg hit in the two hole a lot for the Cubs.

Actually, when you take all things into consideration, comparing him to Joe Morgan is a much more interesting and relevant discussion, and I think comparing Albert Pujols and Stan Musial would also be much more relevant as well.

He's not flashy, but he's the best all around SS I have ever watched in person, and only Ozzie Smith is better defensively as far as SS's that I have seen live- I have never seen Omar Vizquel or Rey Ordonez play in person, FYI.

And as I'm sure you know- I'm a diehard Cardinals fan.

apples to oranges. Stan is THE Man, Jeter is not. Jeter may be a HOF'er eventually but Musial is arguably one of the best all around players of all time. Jeter is not.

Jk, I hate the yankers but Jeter is a stand up guy. I agree it's peas and carrots you can't really compare the two.
