Please forgive if Germans...

From the Hattiesburg American:

Academic suspensions.

Omission of certain programs.

Unfair funding.

These are just some of the concerns Pine Belt officials have about a proposal to eliminate the state College Board and give each university its own board of trustees.

The proposal was discussed during hearings Wednesday and Thursday in Jackson after being pitched by state Sen. Doug Davis, R-Hernando, chairman of the Senate Universities & Colleges Committee.

If approved, the proposal would disband the current board and give individual boards of trustees power to hire university presidents and oversee administrative duties.
Click here to see the whole article.

Watson through Davis under the bus at the hearings.

Let's see. Watson looking for permanent job from College Board. check. College Board not wanting to see individual college boards. Check. Watson understanding lobbying for a job. check. Watson absolutely against MSU having its own board -- well, at least the guy knows where his bread is buttered. But, damn. Talk about selling us down the river.
Edited to say: And I like Vance Watson. A lot. But, that's typical gubment mentality.

I dislike the college board as well, and I am sure that surprises you all. I believe the universities should control their own destinies. I would love to see each school have their OWN board of trustees to oversee the university. Not everyone will be happy with a decision renedered by the college board and in all honesty, they shouldn't be. Also, other schools alumni should NOT have any say in who is the president of another school, that school's alumni should be selecting their own presidents and running their own universities. The college board should be disbanded and the schools should have control of where they go from here.

in MS agree with you. In MS, we tend to be hard wired to prefer more local governance. However, given that all the University Presidents work for the college board, none of them are going to be vocal about wanting a local board. Therefore, it's a tough sell.

The crap he has done the past few years in the Ag sector of State borders on powertripping for his own political gain. He has run off some very good people that were huge assets to our industry.

I told him that I felt like most people were for something like he is proposing. He said to let your state elected officials know that of course.

Keenum through the back door.

It would be very good for State and Ole Miss, but pretty much destroy everybody else.

Why would separate boards for each school destroy all the other schools? Who else would look after their interests better than their own dedicated board?

We have 8 public universities in this state. That is way too many. If this caused MUW to close/merge with MSU and DSU and MVSU to merge, I would be all for it.

The major power brokers in the state would all lobby for positions on the State and Ole Miss boards and to a lesser extent, USM's board. The other school boards would get the leftovers.

The State and Ole Miss boards would have far more pull in getting things done. The word "destroy" was perhaps too strong, but it would definitely hurt them. The HBCUs would be alright at least in comparison to their current state.

Of course, the IHL hasn't been too friendly to the interest to the regional schools lately. The President at Delta State looks like he belongs in battered woman's shelter as bad as Merdedith has slapped him around. Regardless, the current system benefits them more than a decentralized system would.

Actually, the number of postsecondary institutions in the state is just slightly above the national average. I am not necessarily for or against merger/closure/consolidation, it is just that I think perhaps that argument is a bit overplayed.

The economies of scale perspective would dictate a slimming down. The educational opportunity / community outreach would dictate everything is about right particularly considering that number is driven largely by two-year institutions (at least I think it would be without a further look at the data).

There again, I am not sure I wouldn't like to see some merging and consolidation of resources, but it is a little more complicated than some try to make it.

in number of institutions per state, or number of institutions per capita?

Number of institutions per state would be an absolutely horrible basis for comparison.

And there would certainly be some very irate people if a HBCU school was merged, but I think it's worth doing.

If you leave the Valley campus open but combine some administrative positions, then that might be doable. I know of at least one HBCU that has merged.
