With the most talent on the field.

So tell me what teams come to mind when you think of Universities that get the most TALENT year in year out and have done the least with it in the modern era (say 1980 onward). What team signs the best recruiting classes with nothing to show for it except offseason crutin' titles?

1. Texas - Nobody has more talent in state and they get every pick of the litter. One title on the back of vince young in a pretty weak overall conference. It's the one
thing I can give their arrogant fans **** about.

2. Georgia - I can't think of another school with more talent and less to show for it. Though they have been alot of good teamsto get through since'80with the florida's
and some tennessee teams here and there.

3. Michigan - They have gotten top notch recurting classes since schembechler. Natl title in 90. Their winning percentage, bowl appearances, and conference titles
are manyso some might consider this a miss.

4. Notre Dame - Does anyone get more recruits with just the value of a name and stated religion? National title in'88.Media pampering...good lord!
talk about gettingass patted all the time. The tiger woods of college football. they could be 6-4 and still be ranked in the top 5.

5. Florida State, Ohio State,Penn State??

So I realize it is subjective, butit's the offseason and I miss football badly. Give me your thoughts.

Being in the SEC with help aTm. They'll get more credit for the teams they beat and more sympathy for the teams they lose to. And they'll become a better team by rising (or attempting to rise) to the level of their competition.

I know Stoops gets love but outside of 2000 they have routinely been ranked 1 or 2 going into the season, only to not win it all.

Georgia has no excuse, they just have never put together a 12 game stretch of success to get over the hump.

Those 2 stand out among the elite, where national championships are concerned.

Tennessee to that list. Good recruiting every year. Lot of NFL talent. 100,000 in the stands. Should be doing better.

An imaginary poll of 100 hypothetical Montanans has Ole Miss ranked higher in perception than MSU.

Texas probably has't signed a 3 star in years they have all been 5* and 4*. I am probably being hard on them because they are total JA's. They have won a NC, been to another (loss to bama), a rose bowl, and pretty much win 10 games every year.

There is nothing better than "a peasant" whooping the dog **** out of a "knight" for the soon to be 4th year in a row. A peasant who doesn't know his place I guess. They always think it is a popularity contest.

they have top 10 recruiting every year....one year they were like number 2 in recruiting...top rated QB in the nation 2 years in a row(Jimmy Clausen, Dayne Crist) and they hadn't done a damn thing with it....They have been on a steady decline since the late 80's

Well, it is obvious then Cross has never spent anytime in Arkansas.

For starters, Arkansas has nicer & bigger athletic facilities than State or OM. Even as nice as State and OM has. Then in Arkansas almost everyone is a Razorback. In addition, there is much much more state pride over there than in MS. The result of this is 90% of home state talent wants to play there. Then when out of state talent comes in, they see/sense the positive energy and want to be a part of it. In MS recruits are being pulled a least two directions and get caught in the middle of the negativity that flys back and forth. Then you ride around MS and you see more Alabama and LSU tags, hats, shirts...than State and OM. Not to mention that NW Arkansas is a very beautiful place to spend 4 years. Oxford doesn't even come close....I don't care if they have a grove of trees and muddy Sardis. Anyway, I don't mean to disparage MS but Arkansas has alot going for it than most people know.

Losing Bobby P hurt em. It hurt em bad. They're a house made of wet toilet paper with a wafer-board foundation. Without his hand a the helm, they won't sustain these magical seasons they've had.

Don't believe me? Recruiting counts, believe that or not. Look at the numbers. They haven't done that well. As much crap as we've Mullen's cruiting, he's "out recruited" Petrino in at least two classes arguably. Petrino knew how to use lesser talent. I am not sure a new coach at Arky will.

Give it a couple of seasons with the low quality of high school ball in Arkansas, and they will be back to 7-6, 8-5.

they don't have a whole lot of good high school players in arky, but they pull a lot from eastern texas and Dallas area which has great high school teams and coaching systems. The cast asides or noroom for's from Texas (which is pretty good). All they have to do is not want to go toaTm orLSU and it's arky bound.

that will probably change some without petrino and his explosive offense and winning.

is not #1 since 2000 if recruiting class rankingsare the basis for 'talent'.

Losing Petrino will have a big effect on their future success for sure. However, as you said, they will drift back to .500 ball. Which makes my point. Even with an average to bad coach, they will win as many games as State and OM in their better years. Then when they do land a good coach...it will back to BCS bowl games. Something we have never done.

As for HS football....yep, MS has more exceptional athletes. However, the higher classifications of AR HS football play a more sophisticated game than in MS. But regardless, MS would have to produce double the five and four stars as AR for State or OM to sign as many stars as Arkansas after the MS talent flees to everywhere else. Anyway, that is my answer to Cross' question.

I don't think we're in the same league as Cincinnati, Wake Forest, and the other weak programs in Peasants. I'd put us in the 3rd tier (Barons?), but then there's a pecking order within the group, just as there is in all the other groups. For instance, we're probably perceived higher than Georgia Tech.<div>
</div><div>He probably should have an Ethereal group, composed of Alabama, Ohio State, USC ... and nobody else.</div><div>
</div><div>And another point ... I'll bet not many of the 100 Montanans know the difference between MSU and UM ... just as we get Iowa and Iowa State confused.</div>
