needs a early signing period. Maybe from the day after signing day until the Friday after Easter. Helps the kids the high school coaches and the colleges.

Early signing period would only benefit coaches for the most part and add many more problems for the student athlete.

The best thing for the student athlete is to have the signing day after their last HS grading term. That way every athlete could prove their academic standing and not be left behind, but it would inconvenience coaches because of spring ball, which can't be tolerated just to benefit of the athlete.

The problem is the recruited players don't have a representative at the decision making table in regards to an early signing period. Who has the students best interest in mind when this decision would be made? Coaches? AD's? Prez?

Kids and coaches change their minds. The whole process is very fluid. With all the coaching changes that occur every year this time of year is just crazy. UF & Michigan both have a bunch of spots to fill. They are going to fill those spots with players that are already committed to other schools like Louisville. In some case those situations work out the best for schools like Louisville. A team over signs and Louisville is there to pick up the player.

The early signing period would weed out the players that 100% know where they are going. Alabama would probably have close to a full class if there was a early signing period. Louisville would only have a couple that would sign early. Teams like Louisville would have to be very selective in who they took early on. I don't see an early signing period being really having that big of an impact. With the current system you are at least getting players that want to be a Louisville. There is no buyers regret. I think there is actually more buyers regret at the big time programs. You don't see many transfers at Louisville.

The current signing period is from the first Wednesday in February to May 1st, so an early signing period would have to be in the fall.

Understand these points, and I don't have a strong opinion either way. My question is how are these points any or much different from basketball where there has long been an early signing period (ESP)?

Also, and despite what many think, there's nothing that requires a student-athlete to sign a letter-of-intent at all! Everyone simply assumes it's the way to get the scholly. But a 5-star kid who's wanted by everyone can simply choose his school late in the academic year and show up on someone's doorstep, assuming he's met all of the necessary application and entrance requirements.

I can see where an ESP is more appropriate for football since it's now commonplace for kids to enroll a semester early and go thru spring practice. No such connection with basketball...
