Concerned season ticket holder

This baseball season at MSU brings a new student entity to campus, The Dudes. Season ticket holders
may find a small dog bone on the back of their seat branded with “Dudes.” In a recent letter to all con-
cerned, head baseball coach, John Cohen, notified us that all such seat markings indicated that the seats
were not being used often enough. Therefore student members of the Dudes could claim any such seat. Of
course they are to respectfully vacate the seat if the rightful ticket holder arrives.

What’sgoing on at MSU? It seems to me that ticket holders’ rights and privileges are gradually being
eroded and the seats redistributed. When the new stadium was constructed back in the 80s, the original
seat purchasers had their name stamped on the seat. We were told that as long as we bought season tickets,
they were our seats. Recently all the seats were replaced but the names were not. Now here come the
Dudes to warmand trash our seating area. On opening night some Dudes were sitting in a friend’s box,
accidentally spilled nachos and cheese, then left with no effort to clean up the mess when the rightful seat
holders arrived for the game. And now previously free game day programs cost a dollar and coffee is up
to three dollars. But if you think you are getting a fresh Starbucks, your taste buds are in for an insult,
Warm and weak this colored hot water has not improved in size or flavor.

What is next? Will Polk-Dement become Cohen Stadium? Will Dudy-Noble become Papelbon Field?
Where is the respect for those who helped build this fine baseball facility?

I think it's safe to say, that Martin M. Pomphrey Jr. M.D. is in the "I know it's third down and short in a tie game in the 4th quarter... but I paid for this seat, so you will sit down or I will have you ejected from the game" crowd.

Here is the guy's real problem. He still feels punched in the stomach. I would be willing to bet that he wrote his letter to the newspaper before ever trying to contact Cohen or Stricklin. If he really was just concerned about spilled nachos, a quick phone call would have done the trick.<div>
</div><div>The bottom line is that if Polk had done something as creative as this, he would be on board with it. But his feelings are still hurt. Thank God for Greg Byrne. Stricklin has such a difficult job trying to make these old timers happy and make progress at the same time.<div>

So a doctor is bitching about the cost of a program and coffee. Would the bastard like to see my last bill from Blair Batson Hospital and see what doctors cost? I think they can afford $4.

If I had paid for a box seat and that happened, I'd be pissed too. Of course for most games, I'd just move to another empty seat and move on unless it was too crowded. One thing to remember is that this is different than the basketball seats. People got the same seats just because of tradition, they didn't pay for them and they didn't have any right to those seats. With baseball, there is a legal contract where these people paid for lifetime seats. If one of them decides to sue, they could probably get the Dudes moved back to the bleachers/outfield.

Seems like Dr P has an inflated sense of entitlement when it comes to those seats. He would actually prefer the team play before an empty, lifeless stadium rather than risk sitting in proximity to an unwashed student group that might make a little noise and drip cheese on a seat or two, or heaven help us, actually sit in his unused seat. Here's a thought. Attend the games and if he can't give your tickets to someone who can & he'll never have that little dog bone on his seat and he can leave the sanitizing wipes at home.

Reading this just makes me laugh as I think about the old wooden bleacher days where there were a few season ticket seats behind the plate while for everyone else it was first come first served no matter who you were. If you didn't get to the stadium at lease an hour early on SEC weekends you might not get a seat. Happy that we moved past that but those were some really fun days.

Simply ask them to clean it up. Most students would do it if you ask politely but sternly.

He's right, the coffee as well as all of the food has become really bad since Aramark took over. But this it the one MSU sporting venue where you can bring in food or drink without getting hassled. So either brew it at home and bring a thermos or stop at Strange Brew, Starbucks, McDonalds, Hardees, or the gas station, on the way to the game and get a cup of coffee.

Made me think of the Seinfeld episode where Jerry was buying a new car from Puddy, and there was an old guy that talked about being able to buy candy for a nickel.

He was mentally slow and just sat in a waiting area at a dealership. Seems about right.

Hey, Dr. Pomphrey, Jr., M.D., it appears that Ole Miss advanced degree of yours went to your f'n bigass head. Those ***** rubbed off on you, Marty.

And Faust is exactly right. You blew your cover with the stadium name-change complaint. I'm betting you typed your letter up on a selectric, didn't you?

God...I hope so. I wanted Polk's name off the stadium when he became head coach at Ga. NEVER name a facility after a coach who is still alive !!!

I still don't understand why so many people got so worked up over that. And what's the big deal about naming a stadium after a coach who's still alive? Lots of schools disagree with you on that.

But I think we made a big mistake by not taking his name off of it permanently when he said he wanted his name taken down when we hired Cohen.

This was one of the worst decisions athletics has made when it comes to the fans. The problem is, I bet the guy that wrote this has not been to a game this year, and probably went to a handful of Saturday games last year. The problem is they barricade the grandstands off from students who CAN'T sit in the grandstands and have to either sit in the bleachers or sit in the outfield. Meanwhile, the majority of these season ticket holders who have contracts don't come to the games... so the outfield and bleachers are packed while 80% of the maroon chairbacks are empty.

Look, dude, if you have a problem with people sitting in a seat you don't use, come to games. I have never seen a student, even before the Dudes, get upset or defensive when a season ticket holder came to use their seat. Most will politely get up and move. But why keep the students out of an empty grandstand if the season ticket holders won't sit there, anyway? Also, it looks awful on TV because you see nothing but empty seats.

I hope Stricklin and company try to figure out a way to work their way out of these lifetime contracts because it has really hurt attendance at the games. There are games I would wait until the 5th inning to go to so I wouldn't have to sit in the bleachers half the game while the grandstand was completely empty. Or, just expand the grandstands and create a student section by not selling any tickets in a certain section. Then the students will be happy and the season ticket holders who don't come to games will be happy.

and am glad to know that someone will be sitting in it if I'm not able to attend. This needs to be done for basketball next year. It's sickening to see the upper level crowded and the lower level 1/4/ to 1/2 empty. If you don't want to ask someone to move, get to the game earlier.

If they find a way around the contact, they will simply sell the seat on an annual basis (as in basketball & football). The seats will remain empty (as in basketball). I think that the "Dudes" is a good solution and should be done in basketball.

If a seatholder makes a request that the dog bone be removed from his seat, remove it. I would guess that very few would make that request, so you're not really losing that many seats. And it's better than having a disgruntled donor who could potentially sue you and end the Dudes program completely.

One of the best decisions I ever made was to buy seats at Dudy Noble, even though thereweresome years I didn't get to attend many games. I always made an effort to pass my tickets along to someone when I could.

Over the past few years I have been able to attend more games, and I always wondered why the administration couldn't come up with a way to pass along my tickets - or at least allow someone to use my seats - if we weren't going to be there. I always believed there was a way for the empty seats to be utilized and still protect those of us who have been supporting the program through season-ticket purchases every year since 1987.

I was extremely pleased to learn of the Dudes. During the opening game, cold weather and all, it was great to see so many students sitting in the grandstands - especially on the first base side. They added excitement to the game, and iteven reminded my days as a student sitting in the old wooden bleachers laughing and cutting up with the old codgers.

Well now I'm one of the old codgers and I enjoy having the students sitting around me. I hope the students will continue to embrace the idea and continue to attend games, sit in the grand stands, make noise and help us win.</p>

I’m sure, as with anything new, there are going to be some hiccups. But I have to give kudos to the staff for looking for a way to involve students.

While I don't have a dog-bone on the back of my seat, I will never have aproblem with someone sitting there. And anyone who does isn’t a true fan and just needs to shut the hell up.</p>

That is the guy that wanted me to sit down at the Hump during the final minute of the game against Ole Miss last year when everyone else was standing up. I kid you not.

He was yelling "Down in front!" at me- I yelled "Up in the back!" at him. He was pissed.

You could tell that he was a douchebag.
