feeling that his hiring there would be another poke at us to some degree. I'm not saying that it would be their sole reason for hiring him by any means, but unless he wows them in an interview, with all things being equal you would think they would go with Freese. They know and seem to really like Freese and he did a similar job as Hud did with taking a crappy team and doing well with them. And they know that Hud would be at the very top of our list if/when Mullen leaves. In years past they would never have lowered themselves to hiring a favorite son among the MSU fanbase.

I am sure that is somewhere in the thought process but it's WAY down the list. All things considered, I really don't see them as equals. ASU was picked to finish near the top of the Sun Belt whereas UL was picked 120th out of 120 teams in D-1 by Athlon preseason. Hud has been a part of 3 turn around jobs, 2 as the head coach. He obviously has a plan and it works.

I think Ole Miss names a head coach by the end of this week. As a State fan I hope they go with Freeze.

if we take it that way. By that, I mean, it is becoming clear that this search committee is doing things very differently than how they've done things in the past. They are going for the best available candidates...regardless of "name recognition." I can almost guarantee you that Archie Manning hasn't thought about how he could slight us one time in the entire process. He's just looking for the best available coach...

Could also be taken flattery... It is an acknowledgement of our recent hiring practices and how well it's worked thusfar. In that way, they are following suit....

They're trying to make a hire that they think will be able to compete in the SEC and generate some excitement in their limp program. Getting one in on us has got to be the furthest thing from their minds.

That reminds me of my idiot brother (huge Ole Miss homer - the Spirit type) - he swore up and down that the ONLY not "one of", but the ONLY reason we hired Cohen was to piss Ole Miss fans off. When I asked him "You do know he played at State, right? You do know that he took a once miserable program with the least amount of baseball tradition and history and made them a national contender, right?"...his answer? "Yeah, but y'all just hired him because Ole Miss fans hate him."

Don't be my idiot brother. No one likes him.

Yes, he was a WR coach for us, but had he become our head coach, he may have us in the same situation or better now. He's obviously a proven winner. The man has coached 8 years and only had 1 losing season. He took a LA-Lafayette team from 3-9 to 8-4 and a bowl game and lost the last game @ Arizona by only a touchdown. <div>
</div><div>I think deep down, us State fans are hoping Ole Miss doesn't bring him in. I had a good discussion with a staff member on campus Saturday about Byrne and Stricklin as ADs. What they said made a lot of sense. Byrne brought a very progressive mindset to our athletic program. What Stricklin brought was a little more --- he has the brains and creative mind but also the HEART for the university. With that said, I fully believe Stricklin has taken our program further than Byrne would have.</div><div>
</div><div>Hudspeth --- if he ever came to State --- would have that same mix as Stricklin. The brains and the heart.</div><div>
</div><div>Hudspeth to Ole Miss only makes me wonder ... with the athletic talent Ole Miss already has, I think he'd turn that ship around quick. Here's one hoping he never gets the opportunity.</div>

If the Bears hire Hud and Mullen takes the Penn State job* a week later, we send Stricklin up to Oxford and ask Hud, "Hey, wouldn't you rather be the head coach at State?"<div>
</div><div>*I am in no way in favor of Mullen leaving, just saying this would have to be part of the scenario.</div>

From all I've read he'd much rather have the MSU job, but if he's offered the UM job and takes it, I can't see him looking back.

Which is funny considering when you were going through this in 2009, every time a rumor came out about you hiring Coach X, it was a homerun hire.

Considering Hudspeth would probably be at or near the top of your search list if Mullen were to leave this year, I don't think I'd talk down about him, because I will be forced to call you out when you call it a homerun hire when you hire him. That is, if we don't hire him first.
