Texas, Notre Dame, and BYU are forming an 'independent' confederacy. They would negotiate together for TV contracts.

Not to mention that Texas isn't an independent and won't be unless (until) Texas A&M leaves the Big 12. Or that even if (when) A&M does leave and the Big 12 falls apart, Texas already HAS its own exclusive TV deal in the Longhorn Network. Why would either of these schools want to bring BYU (or even each other) into the equation?

Guaranteed scheduling of "quality" opponents, plus Texas thinks it can deliver the remnants of the B12. ETA: Each independant would have it's own negotiating rights with whoever, but the confederacy could supply easy home/home games.

Not a rumor, just logic.

Texas on its own is going to have trouble scheduling 12 games. They're going to need to band together with some independents and also have and ESPN throwing money around to lure opponents. I personally don't see how that's going to work out well from them.

I think they overestimate their importance to college football.

And if they stay independent, they're hurting themselves badly in any national championship race. SEC, PAC10, Big10 teams all get to play a conference championship game, which is an extra game against a quality opponent. We've seen many times that this extra game is BCS poll leverage against other teams who don't get to play a conference championship game. Texas won't have that game anymore.

I'm not a Texas hater. But I'd love to see them trip & fall, and put themselves 10-15 years behind because of their arrogance and what they've done to the Big 12.

Assuming Texas does wind up as an independent. I think their first choice is to stay in the Big 12. I'm just not sure that will be an option for them a few years down the road.

If you are not in the national championship hunt then IMO your season is meaningless. Which means BYU is even more meaningless than before

another year like last year - would that be a negative right when they are trying to negotiate this deal ?
