because we were projected to be an NIT team before the season started, just like SC was.

it should matter when your team goes 1 and 4, after jumping out to a 6-2 start. Anyway, I predicted NIT at the beginning of the year as most people did, I just hate losing games. Guess I ought to be used to it by now.

If all State fans would just expect to win 5 games a year then every season would be a success.

It's simply played to its ability. That 6-2 record was against teams with a combined 38-59 record going into tonight. Since then, we've played teams with a combined 37-24 record going into tonight. The "hot start" and the "collapse" are both illusions created by the schedule. We are, and have always been, an average to slightly below average team in a bad conference.

the comments about changing expectations are laughable.

i hate losing as much if not more than most red blooded americans but i sure as hell didn't think we were good after the 6-2 start. all you had to do was look at our pre-SEC play to see we weren't that good. there were a lot of threads on here saying that we are now about to get to the harder part of our schedule and we would really see what kind of team we are. the answer is in: average at best and ****** at worst. i was pleasantly and skeptically surprised after 6-2 and hoped that we could continue.

would you guys be happier if we had won every other game in the SEC so that you didn't get your precious 17ing hopes up?

In your sarcasm lies the cold hard truth. I never expected much from this team, even when we were 6-2. At 6-2 we didn't have quality wins to make me believe there was anything to that.

If we are playing to the best of our ability, then I'd like to know how so many on this board expect us to be so much better next year, cause I sure don't see it. Below average to average players don't become superstars over a year. The only way average teams can be successful is if they have a nitch (very physical - which we're not, run some form of offense - which we don't, really good defenders - which we don't have). And NO, living by 3s do not count as a nitch. I think we've seen how that experiment has worked out.

We're the 3rd youngest team in an SEC. With a year of experience, we will improve. LSU's and Auburn's juniors and seniors are certainly playing better than they did when they were freshmen and sophomores.

I think LSU is mostly seniors. I will be very shocked if they do well next season.

I'm not as optimistic about next year as others are either. I understand that all our players other than B. Johnson SHOULD be back next year and SHOULD get better with another year under their belts. However, if we don't go out and find a physical PF/C that can play, which is unlikely this late in the recruiting game, I see us suffering the same fate next year unless Osby improves 100% and that isn't too likely with the limited playing time he's getting. Kodi is gone and we can't depend on Elgin to win any games for us. If we trot out the same 4-guard + Swat lineup next year we will struggle to make the Dance again. To add insult to injury OM will be favorite to win the West.

LSU is one of the most experienced teams in an SEC that just so happens to be the youngest major conference in the country.

It's been a good year for Johnson, but I think there are plenty of coaches currently in the SEC that would be doing as well as he's done this year if you were to swap teams. He's got the best, most experienced team in the league. LSU was the favorite to win the West pre-season, so it's not like you can crown Johnson as a great coach just yet.

Players don't have to get playing time to improve. True freshmens who aren't ready to play at this level get a lot more benefit out of practice than they ever could be getting more minutes in games when they're not ready for them. Jarvis and Ravern both improved a lot between their FR and SO years without much playing time as FR (and they're just the latest in a long list that includes players like Timmy Bowers and Derrick Zimmerman). Osby will be a much better player next year.

I hope you're right. The encouraging thing about Osby is he doesn't seem to lack the talent, he just simply looks lost out there. That's something that time will cure.

...is this:

Our starters:

PG: 6-1 170 pounds
SG: 6-3 170 pounds
WF: 6-7 175 pounds
C: 6-9 203 pounds
PF: 6-3 175 pounds

UT's starters:

PG: 6-3 200 pounds
SG: 6-7 200 pounds
SF: 6-7 210 pounds
C: 6-9 245 pounds
PF: 6-7 225 pounds

The SEC allows a lot of contact. It is a very physical and rough and tumble league. Example, Ravern's drive to the basket which was rejected by Williams and resulted in a wide open slam by Chism. Ravern drove the right side of the lane, and half way down the lane he was given a hip bump by Chism, which was a foul not called, and Rave was knocked way offline and off balance for the drive creating the necessity for a very acrobatic attempt at a shot, which was rejected by Williams. When Chism knocked Rave offline, he started running the court, resulting in the slam. That is one example of our guys simply being "out physicalled." LSU exposed us and showed they could simply extend their defense and out physical us. Teams are driving the lane at will against us, because we are too light to fight through picks and stop a drive. We depend on being quick and fast and teams like UT and LSU run guys at us just as quick, but 30-40 pounds heavier. Last night, UT didn't start physically mugging us until the 2nd half. We led in rebounding at the half 18-17, but were outrebounded by 9 in the 2nd half.
