Graduated in Meridian in '65, but went to Lauderdale County schools one year (8th grade) before all the small schools were consolidated into the directional schools. I remember it well. Of course, the consolidation was controversial. Had I gone to the county schools in high school, it would have been Northwest Lauderdale, not Southeast.

I played for him at Meridian High 2000-2003. He was our top assistant. He was a better coach then than Vince Mclemore. We lost in south state all 3 years, but me and other teammates have always said we would have at least made state once and probably won it once with Shay as our head coach. Congrats coach!

Shay was a good kid and attending ICC then. His dad got a phone call requesting he come to ICC because of some trouble Shay had gotten into. Seemed he and been with some other athletes who decided to pour salt water into the vending machine coin slots to make themselves a little money. Talk about one hot daddy .. and I remember Shay being a changed person when dad got through with him.

Can't ask for a better role model for young kids.

This might have been his only chance at winning a state title at SEL. They have enough young talent to keep them in the playoffs but probably not enough to win state. 3A seemed to be down this year also. Sumrall looked small and young in south state. Blake McMullen threw a no hitter in game 1 against them and then threw a 1hitter in game 3 on two days rest. He might need surgery on his arm now but he wanted to pitch and has no intentions of playing at the next level.

I believe yall run ruled us. We were pretty awful besides one year when we had Coach Richardson my sophomore year. He only stayed for one year then bolted for a better job. Then they decided to get a good coach (Butler) after I graduated and had a real good year. It's amazing what a good coach can do to a HS team. They like Cooper and will try to hold onto him for a while.
